I'll never forget that day.
One of my daughters was supposed to fly from NY to LA that day on a business trip. We didn't know if she was on one of the flights that crashed. There were no cell phones in those days, and we later found out that she was trapped in a traffic jam on the bridge to the airport, with no way of getting off. Her husband, who was in the military, kept calling us every hour to ask if he had heard from her. We hadn't.
It wasn't until later that afternoon that she got diverted away from the airport, ended up at the house of one of her traveling companions who had ben in the car with her, and was able to call us to let us know she was ok.
But in the intervening hours until we heard from her, we were in sheer panic.
