Pats Come to MetLife Stadium for First Meeting of Season

AP_765851807573-brady-top.jpg

The Buzz: The Patriots sit atop the AFC East and are tied for first place in the AFC with an 8-2 record. Since QB Tom Brady’s return from suspension in Week 5, the Pats are averaging 32 points per game with their only loss coming on Sunday Night Football to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 10.

Offense

The Staples: Brady, debatably the best quarterback in NFL history, has been extremely effective in his shortened season, leading the No. 6 passing attack in the league. Through six games, the four-time Super Bowl champion has thrown for 1,915 yards, 16 touchdowns and one interception, while completing 70.4% of his passes for a rating of 123.3. Last week against San Francisco, the 17-year vet tossed four touchdowns en route to a 30-17 victory.

Brady’s go-to receiver is TE Rob Gronkowski, who leads the team with 540 receiving yards on 25 catches. The 6’6”, 265-pounder is averaging a league-best 21.6 yards per catch and has also found the end zone three times. Gronk did not play last week against the 49ers (chest) and his status for this week is unknown. A full injury report will be released Wednesday.

Blount Force Trauma: RB LaGarrette Blount has been the bell cow for this Patriots ground game, rushing for 802 yards (No. 8 in the NFL) off 201 carries, an average of 20 rushes per game. Blount is averaging 4.0 yards per carry and leads the NFL with 12 rushing touchdowns. The 6’0”, 250-pounder has recorded four 100-yard rushing games, the latest coming in Week 11 with 124.

Defense

The Anchors:
CB Malcolm Butler made a name for himself with a game-sealing interception in Super Bowl 49 and hasn’t looked back. In his second season as a starter, Butler leads the team in passes defended (11) and has an interceptions. The West Alabama product is also the Patriots’ fifth leading tackler with 44.

Second-year DL Trey Flowers is New England’s most effective pass rusher — he leads the team in sacks (4) and QB hurries (9). Flowers, who only appeared in one game his rookie season, is tied for second on the team with five tackles for loss. Additionally, the Arkansas product has racked up 24 tackles.

Reliable Tacklers:
The Patriots secondary may be in the middle of the pack in terms of yards per game allowed (No. 15 in the NFL), but they are good at bringing the ballcarrier down. Four of the defense’s top five tacklers are members of the secondary with S Patrick Chung leading the charge with 60. CB Logan Ryan and S Devin McCourty rank second and third with 55 and 53 total tackles, respectively. The only player in the top five who is not a part of the secondary is ILB Dont’a Hightower, who ranks No. 4 with 49.

Improved Pass Defense Readies for Brady, Run Game Is Reaching Its Stride

AP_501917192671-quincy-run-pats.jpg

The Jets and the Patriots won’t be passing ships in the night. After they collide Sunday at MetLife Stadium, they’ll have a return engagement at Gillette Stadium on Christmas Eve.

While the 8-2 Patriots are searching for their eighth consecutive divisional title and 13th in 14 seasons, the 3-7 Jets are focused on changing the narrative over the last six games. They insist there is plenty to play for and recent history suggests a close game could be on the horizon. In their past three home games against the Patriots, the Jets have captured two contests in overtime and they dropped a one-point decision in between.

One Goal: Before his team departed for its Week 11 Bye, Jets head coach Todd Bowles made it clear that he has only one objective.

“You’re always trying to win and get better. The name on your back is as important as the name on the front of the jersey is important. You’re always trying to win,” he said. “We have to win for a bunch of reasons. That’s our job to come in there and try to win, mine as a coach, theirs as a player and ours as a team.”

Self-Scout: While the bye gave many Jets an opportunity to heal their bumps and bruises, the coaching staff got a chance to review the team’s first 10 games. Despite the 3-7 start, there are some things that the Jets can build off entering Week 12 action. The run game has kicked it up a notch of late and the duo of Matt Forté and Bilal Powell combined for 198 total yards against the Rams. And the Patriots experienced some difficulty with 49ers RB Carlos Hyde last week as he averaged 4.5 yards a carry and amassed 110 total yards in defeat. Powell turned in a masterful performance against the Patriots in a 26-20 OT win last December, registering 90 yards on just 12 touches. One of the keys to the Jets’ late run in 2015 was Powell’s emergence as the team’s third receiving target. This year is a different animal, but Forté and Powell look primed to give the offense some much-needed juice down the stretch.

“Playoffs may or may not be in the future, but that doesn’t mean you pack it in and tuck your tail,” Forté said. “You have to keep fighting and build for everything that we have. It’s a privilege to play this game and we need to have that mindset.”

E_MK2_8723-williams-story.jpg

Breakout Performers: The Jets have a couple of second-year studs in WR Quincy Enunwa and DL Leonard Williams. Enunwa put himself on the NFL map last December with a 48-yard catch-and-run against the Patriots in overtime, setting up the game-winning 6-yard TD from Ryan Fitzpatrick to WR Eric Decker. With Decker on injured reserve, Enunwa ranks second on the Jets in catches (38) and receiving yards (534). After he's been limited to just two catches the past two games, the Jets would like to get Enunwa back on a hot streak.

Williams, the No. 6 overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft, leads the Green & White with 6.0 sacks and his 15 QB hits tie OLB Lorenzo Mauldin for the team high. Williams also ranks second with 55 tackles and he has 8 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. No QB likes pressure up the middle and Leo has the ability to make things uncomfortable for Tom Brady. The Jets will run a bunch of looks at Brady, but it would be advantageous to crowd the pocket with four rushers and flood the passing lanes.

30-Something: Since Brady returned to the lineup in Week 5, the Patriots have averaged 32 points a contest. Brady, who is completing 70.4% of his passes with 16 TD and just 1 INT, has been held below 30 in just two of his six starts. The Jets, who rank 30th in scoring at 17.9 points per contest, have topped the 30-point mark on two occasions this season. Finishing drives becomes even more paramount when the Patriots come to town. While the Jets’ red zone struggles have been well-documented, the Patriots rank just 19th inside the red zone defensively.

Monster Test On Deck: The Jets’ much-maligned pass defense has held opposition quarterbacks to a 73.8 QB rating over the last six weeks, the third-lowest in the league during that span. Also QBs over the last five games have averaged a league-low 6.0 yards per attempt while completing just 59.2% of their attempts. With or without the services of TE Rob Gronkowski (lung) and WR Chris Hogan (back), Brady has plenty of weapons at his disposal including the likes of WRs Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola and Malcolm Mitchell, TE Martellus Bennett and RBs LeGarrette Blount and Dion Lewis.

Divisional Dive: Of the Jets’ final six regular-season contests, four will be played inside the AFC East. After this weekend’s matchup with the Patriots, the Green & White close with a three-game divisional run featuring home games against the Dolphins and the Bills in Weeks 15 and Weeks 17 and the holiday collision with the Pats in Foxboro, MA on Christmas Eve.

“Four divisional games left, I think that’s a big deal because they’re all rivalries,” Fitzpatrick said. “They’re teams that you don’t like. We play them twice a year and we learn not to like them for various reasons whether you’ve been here for a lot of time or just a year or two years. They are certainly games that are easy to get up for.”

Five thoughts on the game:

1. Mismatch at quarterback: On the stat sheet, this might be the most lopsided matchup of the year. Brady is the No. 1-rated passer in the league (123.3) and Fitzpatrick (67.6) is the lowest. Heck, it might be one of the biggest mismatches in league history based on passer rating. Belichick is looking at a different statistic, telling anybody willing to listen (no doubt, his players) the Jets have averaged 26 points in Fitzpatrick's past three games.

Personally, I think Fitzpatrick will play well. He will face a defense that has gone 15 quarters without a takeaway -- his kind of defense.

Meanwhile, Mr. Brady is looking for his 200th career win, which would tie Peyton Manning for most combined wins (regular season and postseason) for a quarterback. In other words, Brady is chasing history while Fitzpatrick is fighting to avoid becoming it.

2. Will boobirds fly?: The fan base has turned quickly on Bowles, in part, because of his decision to stick with Fitzpatrick, leaving Bryce Petty on the bench. The crowd won't have much patience -- the boos will start early if Fitzpatrick gets off to a slow start. The over/under on the first "We Want Bryce!" chant is the first three-and-out series. Fitzpatrick is handling the situation well, as he appeared relaxed during the run-up to the game. He will get the old Geno Smith treatment if he doesn't give them something to cheer about -- quickly. The Jets are 1-3 at home, so there haven't been many feel-good moments.

3. Sweet 16: Cheating scandals notwithstanding, the Patriots have become the model franchise. Get this: A win by New England would clinch their 16th straight winning season, tying the San Francisco 49ers (1983-1998) for the longest streak since the merger in 1970. That is a staggering run of consistency, the likes of which we may never see again.

In contrast, the Jets have recorded only 16 winning seasons -- total! -- since the merger. A loss, of course, would mean their fifth non-winning season in the past six years. Dark times, indeed.

4. Paging Brandon Marshall:He's on pace for 69 receptions and 962 yards, a major decline from last season's numbers -- 109 and 1,502, both franchise records. He has gone five straight games without a touchdown and five straight under 71 yards, his least productive stretch since his 2010 season with the Miami Dolphins. He has caught only 48.9 percent of his targets, the worst among receivers whose average target is less than 14 yards downfield, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Obviously, the quarterback play has contributed to his struggles, but there's more to it than that. It'll be fascinating to see how he closes the season; he could be playing for a 2017 roster spot.

5. Baby steps: The Jets' pass defense, an embarrassment in September and October, is showing signs of improvement. Since Week 8, it ranks second in completion percentage (55.5) and yards per attempt (6.0). The Jets haven't been tested by an elite quarterback; that changes Sunday. At the same time, their run defense has developed leaks -- two straight games with at least 100 yards. They haven't allowed 100 in three straight since 2013.

I'm sensing this game gets ugly fast. Like during the intros and National Anthem fast. The fans are not stupid and have had enough, if they show up.
First off there'll be a ton of NE fans with ticket holders tryin to recoup some cash. Next ,the ones that do show up have been questioning the Fitz/Petty scenario heavily on talk radio , media , and net. They will be Chomping at the bit to let Woody , Bowles and anybody there their displeasure.
If mine don't sell ( haven't yet ) I'll probably go to join the early festivities .
Seems like not to long ago we had a similar Thanksgiving party.

I hope the Patriots destroy us tomorrow and I mean like absolutely embarrasses us. I'm talking like 70-3 or something to that nature. Of course I'm hoping for Fitzpatrick to throw about six interceptions and fumbles 3-4 times and he'll probably be able to because TB is not going to pull him no matter what. So I figure I might as will hope for a total wholesale, butt fumble, butt whooping, embarrassment game and then maybe Woody will just decide to cut bait with everybody. Obviously the CS and maybe even Mac. Hopefully he'll decide to go younger with the players and only keep about 15-20 players that truly matter to the team. I never want to see our team get embarrassed but sometimes the greater good is necessary for the cause.

How awful is it when we root against our own beloved team.

Hell, i'am on board as well unless Petty or Hack play. Bowles is just disgusting. Gutless to say the least and balls less. He doesnt have the fortitude to start Bryce especially having an extra week off to prepare?

Todd can go F himself .

The best thing that has come out of his two years here is actually playing Robbie Anderson and thats probably because Decker got hurt or he'd be inactivated every game this season.

The team lost all confidence in him. Hell, he's making decisions based on what the Daily News is pouring out:

"Team will quit on coach if Petty starts". Really? Isnt this the way you filter out the garbage for next seasons roster?

@Maine was on point with this guy. Bowles is a waste. The Jets need to hire a coach with credentials as a HC. Stop with this garbage of hiring assistant or specialty coordinators. Edwards, Mangini, Rex and now Bowles. Get some one here thats been there and is reputable.

This is DISGUSTING!

Bring on the boos, Jets fans. IMO this is the ONLY way we get a change at HC after the season? Two things must happen:

1) The Jets must lose out. This is simply not negotiable. Going from 10-6 straight to 3-13 and the likes of being one of the very WORST teams in the league is the shock necessary to see that change may be necessary?

2) Jets fans must voice their displeasure. They need to get vocal and let the CS and Woody know that this product is simply unacceptable. They need to let Woody know that the fans want change. Even if it is so soon after firing Idzik and Rex, they need to let Woody know that change is absolutely necessary based on the way things are playing out.

NO ONE signed up for this when Idzik and Rex were being fired........

I've been a loyal and diehard Jets fan since 1982 and I hate to think it, feel it and even more say it but I hope they get embarrassed today and the rest of the year. Of course I wouldn't feel this way if Petty or Hack was playing, even Geno but oh well. TB doesn't want to play them, so it is what it is. I don't think I've ever felt this way, actually yes I did. The last two year of the Rex Ryan erra I felt this way and during the Kotite years I felt this way. So I guess third time's a charm.

And that play to Blount with Brady leading and not even TOUCHED is why we are losers.

If the Pats had a chance to lay a lick on Fitz or whomever was the Jets QB in that scenario, they take it 100% of the time. Perfectly legal way to rattle a QB who doesn't like to be touched and our guys run around him like he is covered in broken glass.

This team sucks
