What are the fundamental things the Jets can rectify?

OK, so lets take this from the top and just separate the things that can be fixed immediately in preparation for the Buffalo Game. If you want to go mental on Todd Bowles saying he should be fired? Forget about it. That doesn't help this team on Thursday. This thread is about things that easily be fixed before the Jets take the field on Thursday...

A few things for me:

1) TACKLING - You know I really do not recall a worse game when it comes to tackling especially in the secondary. This is a football 101 issue. There isn't anything more fundamental than tackling. Revis should spend the entire week practicing tackling.

2) IN game Adjustments - We have watched this for two games in a row now. Todd Bowles does NOT make adjustments for very obvious problems. Sammy Watkins cost us the playoffs last season and AJ Green cost us the game today. Meanwhile, Todd Bowles is allowing this to happen whether it be broken coverage or just plain being stubborn, Todd Bowles STINKS at in game adjustments. If he doesn't know how to play chess, this team is dead this season.

3) BETTER RED ZONE OFFENSE - Just 2 for 5 in the red zone today???? Honestly, when they kicked that FG that put us up 22-20, I knew we were going to lose this game. We had to have a TD there and the CS SETTLED for a FG.

Feel free to add more............

1. I have seen some worse tackling games, both last year and in previous years. It's frustrating, because the defense is pretty talented, but they need to finish tackles. Today, the tackling wasn't good, but it was far from the worst I've seen from the Jets.

2. Absolutely agreed about in-game adjustments, on both sides of the ball. No way should bubble screen kill you all day like that.

3. Agreed again. Need more points when you get it deep, especially inside the 10. Should nearly always be scoring, and far more often getting 7.

Great post. I think all of these things are symptoms of problems with the coach. As much as i did not want Fitzpatrick here I am resigned to it and even though he cost $12 million against things we could do next year I assume this is the last year i will have to watch him play.

My greater uneasiness with this team is that I have a suspicion that Bowles is mediocre. Unfortunately he is going to take several years to flush out of the system if that is the case.

I am still scarred by the last game of last year when he refused to make adjustments to stop Watkins the Bills only weapon; he sat Ivory almost the entire game when he was on his game in favor of the ineffective Ridley; and he thought it was a good idea for Fitzpatrick to throw a zillion times in those weather conditions.

Last year when a team found a way to exploit the Jets there seemed to be no in game or even halftime adjustments.

Yesterday I saw more of the same. The Bengals only real weapon Green burnt the Jets all day and there were no adjustments. The Bengals adjusted to the Jets pressure with quick throws and the Jets didn't adjust to that adjustment.

Bowles over relies on the same veterans. He is afraid to let young guys play key roles unless they are absolute studs like Leonard Williams. Where was Robble Anderson yesterday to help the offense. I still don't think Bowles knows how to make the best use of the clock.

I am no there yet but I am beginning to believe that the Jets are woefully weak in the two most important spots on the football team: QB and coach. if that is the case this is very depressing because it will not only be a long year against a strong schedule but it will be a long few years.

As many have mentioned above this game has a lot of similarities to when we lose. Good coaches will find a way to take away the other teams strengths and Bowles did not. He let it happen with Watkins, let it happen with Hopkins and now Green. I watch Revis play that soft zone coverage and that's not his strength. He should be up at the line with their best receiver and have help behind.

BTW - is it me or does Revis look like he needs to lose a few pounds.

I've seen too many times over that this defense rarely is able to stop someone when it really matters. They have brilliant moments but have to figure out how to be brilliant at the end of the half and the end of the game.

With regards to the offense this just may be my pet peeve but when you put a tight bunch formation near or at the goal line against a stout defense you will get stopped. Doing that is a wasted down and just being stubborn. The successes I see is when you spread them out you run or when you bunch you play action pass. The Jets play calling inside the ten was atrocious.

To finish I think Fitzpatrick is an okay and gutsy QB and better than anything we have. But his inability to throw long against good defenses gives them more options to cheat underneath.

With all that if freakin Marshall catches that easy one at the end of the game we'd all probably be happy maybe minus the secondary's performance.

Unfortunately I think this is just how good the team is. Good enough to hang with decent teams, but not good enough to beat them. Yes, there were mistakes, but over the last 17 games, thats what they have shown to be. A team that makes mistakes at critical times.

These are very correctable fixes IMHO. The Jets are a disciplined team that unfortunatly had many hiccups yesterday. Folk though is absolutley the goat of the game and he will absolutly bounce back. Revis just can't hang with the best of them anymore, hence he needs help, alot of help over the top. An adjustment Bowles must emphasize.

My only concern is that as much as i like Fitz as our QB, i just didn't like the fact that he was very off on his passes today. The O-Line did a fantastic job protecting him and the run game allowed the pass game to give him the opportunities to just make the neccesary throw. Very inaccurate and inconsistant.
Yet, i feel Ryan will look to have a bounce back game in a very difficult atmosphere up in Buffalo this thursday night.

These issues are very correctable.

Four things I noted from Game 1 ........

1) we need a 3rd and short back ....sign Karlos Williams
2) Shrine is a very good nickel and dime back, we need a starting CB across from Revis
3) we need to use some of the younger/faster recieves to stretck the field..
4) we need to get the LB's more involved in the whold Defensive gameplan. They were good but not domininant.

We lost at the very end of the game. This game could have gone our way but for a missed extra point and FG. Also a blown coverage with safeties and Revis missed bat away ball by inches. Cinci was 12-4 last year. Our team is just as good IMO. We will compete all year with everybody else and have a chip on our shoulder. Good news is we have an offensive line and a running game and our WR are top notch. Marshall will look to recover after missing the endzone easy catch. All is not that bad.

At some point I would like to see either Fitz or the defense rise up when we need them most at the end. We have lost far too many games because we couldn't score at the end of the game or close it out on defense to win. I watch teams like NE get it done so often it's second nature to them.

We need great players to make great plays and yesterday both Revis and Marshall did nothing of the kind.

Maccagnan will likely evolve into a very good GM.
Fitzpatrick is a good QB, better than we have had in a while.

Bowles is shaping up to be a mediocre coach.
Stolid and lifeless on the sideline, reluctant to make changes in real time, at times he looks mystified by what he sees on the field and powerless to stop it.

Bowles is the problem.

Tackling wasn't a major issue yesterday..

Communication in the secondary... that and Scheme for quick short passes... that's it

Skrine needs to be in the slot.

As for Marcus Williams, he is in desperate need of consistency. I don't know if I've ever seen more of a feast or famine DB. Six picks last year, one yesterday. The guy is either getting a pick or getting burned. If he ever developed more consistency, he absolutely could be a legit starting CB.

The secondary needs to get it together. I'm not ready to write Revis off as worthless, but he can't cover a guy like Green by himself anymore. They need to adjust better.

First of all. it's worthy to note that anyone that's complaining about Ryan Fitzpatrick???

GET OVER IT

He's not going anywhere. You do realize that, right? Fitz had a good game so long as you realize what he is. Fitz is a good STOPGAP and nothing more. If you thought you were getting Joe Montana for 12 million, you are sadly mistaken. Fitz was inaccurate. Fitz can't throw the long ball.....BLAH BLAH BLAH........ These are things you should have known already. If the Jets are going to win games with him as our QB, they must scheme and make up for his deficiencies, whatever you perceive them to be. He's an average QB and nothing more. He's also the best and only option for the NYJ in 2016. That's why the players and Mike MacCagnan wanted him back.

This is also off topic from the thread. The thread poses the question of what can be rectified for the Jets to play better on Thursday. Complaining about Fitz does not change a damn thing, he's our QB for 2016.

SAME goes for Todd Bowles. He's our HC and it isn't about to change one game into his second season in town. If you want to start another legalizing a poster's rights to shit all over Todd Bowles? Have at it, but that is not what this thread is about.

I want to see the Jets tackle much better against Buffalo. As one poster mentioned, I want to see Fitz and Chan get more receivers involved in the game. I want Todd Bowles to make in game adjustments!!!! I do NOT want the Jets to settle for 3 in the red zone.

Now please add whatever you see as appropriate,.........

Yeah, that's definitely how we're built. But we're not completely one-sided, like the (2000?) Ravens D or the Colts O before they decided they needed something of a D and won the SB. I see us more like that Colts team (in reverse, D-heavy) - our D should be able to keep the other teams under 20, and our O should be able to score 20+ more often than not.

Against the better teams, the top 6-8 teams, we need to be close to perfect on D and win a few where we score less.

But that O deficiency isn't all on fitz. We have some OL/TE issues (not likely to be fixed this year), some short yardage issues (can be fixed IMO), etc. Marshall and Decker pretty much hit their ceiling last year IMO. Marshall has always had suspect hands, at least to the point where he drops one every now and then with no explanation. Decker is only as good as Marshall (or whoever his #1 is) allows him to be. Hoping they, and Fitz, approach last year's production - if so, I think we make the playoffs.

D issues Sunday are more fixable. Definitely need to do a better job of adjusting in-game. Need to work towards a better rotation in tge D backfield. Revis Island needs to open its borders, double it's population. If Revis is resistant, and Bowles entertains that, then my confidence in Bowles will start to waiver.

1) Leadership with respect to team leaders... I do not see anyone being a fiery Brian Cox type madman you need to fire people up... Hey coach how about lighting a fire under people's ass when the screw up instead of looking like a F****ing dufus on the sidelines.

2) The game is called football - FB 101 teaches tackling and blocking. A novelty for some it seems. BTW what the **** did they do during camp?
3) Communicating in secondary and consistency
4) Better play calling on D and O and make some Fking (sorry) adjustments please
5) Stop playing to lose the game. I guess TB didn't learn to much form Arians in AZ because the guy is anything but conservative
6) Get the team ready to play every dam week
7) Start playing the young WR... they are good.
8) If noodle arm keeps missing people bench his ass and put in Petty, I rather have him make mistakes because at least he can throw 50 yards bombs
9) OMG - This is the same list I have written for years.... sigh; thus, SOJ moniker.

8 is why 7 doesn't happen..... Anderson and Peake made some big plays down the field from throws made by Petty whose arm is much much better than Fitzs
