What are the Jets looking for in free agency?

Personally, I think JD is the best GM we have had in like a l-o-n-g time. It appears, to me anyway, that JD's definition of building through the draft isn't to acquire players only through the draft but rather try to get your long term players from the draft and supplement as necessary through free agency and trades to keep the build moving in a positive direction. Even with the excellent cap management and draft pick acquisitions Joe has made there aren't enough picks to upgrade every position of need from the draft especially when there are no guarantees that any player drafted will live up to expectations at the NFL level. So as I see it building through the draft really means that most of the long term players will come from the draft.

hearing the Jets are considering one RB outside returning Tevin Coleman on a one year deal
also hearing they have their focus on a receiver and hoping to bring back Berrios, there is talk about Keelan Cole returning
there is one tight end and not sure who they are focusing in on
they are also seeking for an IOL outside re-signing LDT and Moses
there is some speculation they will try to fill DE and DT with short term deals through free agency
they have their eye on one linebacker in free agency
there is talk but do not know how serious it is but they are looking at three safeties, which they hope to sign two of them

team is also looking at potential kickers both placekicker and punter not sure how serious this is but they are not settled on these two we have

I'm giving JD the benefit of the doubt, but 8-9 is the minimum improvement that I feel is acceptable. If the '22 draft is like the '21 draft we should see a huge leap in talent, but if its like the '20 draft then building through the draft won't work.
That’s fair . I’m looking for that kind of improvement also but I cautioned myself with the knowledge that with this upcoming draft our young team just might become even younger .

Yeah I'm not a fan of the 10-6 model at all. If we are only building through the draft then we will be in a perpetual cycle of mediocrity. They have to get some FA's that can help this team win. 2 more wins next year is unacceptable.

I was being sarcastic about the 2015 / 10-6 model... I don't think you or @innocenti are actually fans of that.

I am? How many times have I actually said anything like that? Oh wait zero. So just make up something about me and attack me for it.

You do realize that the talent pool of, " One year deals on former high (preferably 1st round) draft picks who’s rookie contracts are up that might fit our schemes but for whatever reason didn’t work out where they were drafted ." is people that busted. Not all of them of course but many.

BTW, I'm not a fan of going from 7-9 to 6-27, pretending things are going great, and justifying your opinion with homerish sports articles that are written for the sole purpose of keeping a fanbase interested so they continue to buy tickets, and other NFL merchandise like Joe Douglas Underoos. Oh wait a minute...6-27 is everyone else's fault *sarcasm*. Now everyone must eat a pile of sh*t and pretend it's caviar like good little fans.

With that said, I think next season will be better. They can't do much worse.

i wasn't attacking you... I actually understand why you're not sold on JD; i truly do. i just think his mindset hasn't been on quick moves that will immediately get us into playoff contenders for a year or maybe two. it's actually the opposite. We needed to get bottomed out.

when @Tinstar brought up FA players like Davis, GVR, and all of the roster fillers/place holders, he was illustrating what JD's plan has been. those guys were never meant to be brought on to make an immediate contender. he was purposely bottoming the team out with those 1 year kick the tire deals to see if any turned out to be a "Fant", or a "LVT".

if they were bust moves, great. if they panned out like Fant and LVT, great...the end result is the same in that our ledger isn't full of dead money because of contracts for players who are long gone, and recent signings who are going to be replaced.

JD's plan is easy to see, BUT YOU ARE CORRECT... he has to nail signings now and he has to nail his draft picks now. he did what he needed to do from a money stance. all eyes, including "homerish" ones like mine, should be focused on easy to see results going forward.

no offense on the 2015 comment... Scout's Honor!! it was a sarcastic joke! my apologies.

that is the minimum... but if all the Jets achieve is the minimum, for me, there has to be an "and" in addition to the 8-9 record.

the bulk of the 8 needs come at the end of the season and they need to be the team nobody wants to play while said teams are jockeying for a playoff push.
