I'm not denying Wilson has an arm. He is injury prone. He is a fragile QB and he is not an elite QB. So don't compare him to Joe Willie. My point here is if Wilson who might have another bad year. Douglas and Co. may give him another year to prove himself while passing on this coming years good crop of QB's. If Wilson has another bad year, the QB crop could be worse and we could be choosing between Hackenberg and Geno Smith.

Not to be contentious and this may be considered blasphemous in Jet World, but Joe Namath's career stats aren't in line with the pedestal that we put him on. In his career he had 173 TDs and 220 INTs, and his record as a starter was below .500 (62-63-4). And oh yeah, he was injury ridden if not injury prone. He led Jets to a Super Bowl where he managed to put up 16 points against the Colts. Trent Dilfer also won a SB and he was as pedestrian as they come. I get it, those were different times as far as what the defenses were allowed to do but lets not throw his name around like he was a god-like QB because he wasn't. Exciting yes, controversial, that too and he won the only SB in our otherwise unsuccessful history as an NFL franchise. He's also the reason I started rooting for the Jets, so there's that.

He’s the reason I started rooting for this team too. So I guess I hate him

he also most likely is the cause of the curse on this team

Considering his health, he did pretty good. He was banged up when he arrived and played better than expected. I am with you part way on this. I remember seeing him play at the stadium and stinking up Shea and milking his sb III guarantee for about 10 years in spite of how bad he was.

Blasphemy!!!!!!!
Please don’t bring up those stats they are meaningless to today’s game

Quickest release ever
Dan Marino came close
Yup different era
Took way to much punishment
Injury prone ????
They tried to kill him and he kept on coming back
Played through injuries today’s players would quit

I didn't think I was that harsh about him. Namath was plagued with injuries before he arrived at the Jets facility. This is his rookie card:
namath-rookie-butterfly.jpg

You may know this but he was propped up in his hospital bed for the photo. Namath's career was expected to go only 4 years per one prominent medical professional at the time. But he ended up playing 8 seasons and winning a superbowl.

His stats were atrocious even for the era in which he played. He led the league in ints for 4 different seasons. That's bad in every era.

I just read your tirade and I'm not sure how what I said that was in conflict with it. But I digress.

Superbowl III was before my time...albeit not much. The 70's weren't. And 2 years after superbowl III, the Jets couldn't even sniff the playoffs and the Namath guarantee was brought up whenever Namath was on television and not playing a football game. I remember that too.

Wasn’t a serious “tirade”
You can kinda tell by my list which are half serious half comical but true .
If you lived it it was great and the Jets haven’t come close to a guy like Joe
Everyone has an opinion
But in my book Joe Willie was the man

I think we should wait and see something beyond a rookie year before we start saying he’s not elite. If people judged QB’s on their rookie season stats, many good QB’s would be busts before they broke out in year 2 or 3.

If Brady played when Joe played. There would have been no "Brady rule". Brady would have been deemed a "cry baby" and out of football a while ago. Namath was the first QB to throw for 4,000 yds in a season when the hash marks were spread apart. Namath had a quick release, could read defenses like no other QB. He brought a lot of excitement with his bombs to Maynard. He also took a beating from Ben Davidson and others. Think twice when you call him average. I've watched him play at Shea. He was special!! Those 16 pts he put up against the best defense in football in 1969, while he played a ball controlled offense was well played. That's the makings of a great QB.

And no illegal contact rule, less rules protecting the qb, WRs lining up in 3 pt stances, and 14 game seasons.

What if it wasn’t criticism, but just a statement of facts .
It’s conversations like these that make me dislike when stats are thrown out . When you watch the games, most times the stats only tell part of the story . Case in point would be the story of the Mike White minute as the starting QB .

So Tinstar, are you getting on the Bandwagon with Old#15 stating that Joe Namath was not a good QB?

I was never a fan of Sam Darnold or the pick . I was not a fan of picking Wilson either but I going to say something that’s probably going to get me flamed .

Sam Darnold is going to have a career in the NFL that looks a little like Jim Plunkett .

Namath's SATs were not good enough to get into U. of Maryland, so the coach called Bear Bryant as he didn't want Namath in his conference. Bryant called Namath the best athlete he ever coached, and Joe was THE only player allowed up on Bryant's high perch on the field.
