What to expect from the offense this year?

Unlike the past couple years we shouldn't witness a scripted game, at most expect Morton to only have a portion of the game plan scripted possibly the first 15 to 20 plays... What we know is they plan to utilize a massive dose both Bilal Powell and Matt Forte in their dual ability to be a runner and receiver... The current crop of receivers are best at short to intermediate routes while trying to make the first defender miss to break open yards after catch... We have a couple of knee jerk receivers that could go vertical but there is no guarantee they will get open or be able to bring down the catch on a consistent basis...

So the expectation:

Traditional west coast offense deploys the quarterback into a seven step drop back, but to be fair we don't have the offensive line to be consistent in their pass protection for our receivers to get open and our signal caller to make on time throws... Expect more of a three step hot route game plan... Cutting the field down to portions whomever is under center will have areas of two maybe three targets to throw too... This type offense requires a quarterback who throws extremely accurately, and often blindly, very close to opposing players... The quarterback will need to be able to quickly pick the best one of the receivers to throw to, certainly much more quickly than in previously used systems. Often, the quarterback has no time to think about the play and must act robotic like, executing the play exactly as instructed by the offensive coordinator, who calls the plays for him...

Typical Game Plan:

The majority of the routes occur within 15 yards of the line of scrimmage. 3-step and 5-step drops by the quarterback take the place of the run and force the opposing defense to commit their focus solely on those intermediate routes... Contrary to popular belief, the offense also uses the 7-step drop for shallow crosses, deep ins and comebacks... Because of the speed of modern defenses, only utilizing the 3- and 5-step pass game would be ineffective since the defense could squat and break hard on short-to-intermediate throws with no fear of a down field pass.

The original West Coast Offense of Sid Gillman uses some of the same principles (pass to establish the run, quarterback throws to timed spots), but offensive formations are generally less complicated with more wideouts and motion. The timed spots are often farther down field than in the Walsh-style offense, and the system requires a greater reliance on traditional pocket passing.

Another aspect that makes the West Coast offense one of the most difficult to master is that it requires a deeper connection between quarterback and receiver, and an ability to communicate mid-play. On any given route, a receiver has as many as three options; a hitch, a slant and a fly, depending on what the defense is showing... The quarterback is responsible for recognizing the defense and the reaction of the receiver to it and adjusting the route if needed... This explains the communication mistakes that commonly occur on West Coast offensive plays where the quarterback throws to a spot that the receiver is running away from...

Theory of what to expect from Morton:

Most likely we should be watching a similar style to Bill Wash's West Coast Game Plan... In Walsh's West Coast Offense attempts to open up running and passing lanes for the backs and receivers to exploit, by causing the defense to concentrate on short passes... Since most down and distance situations can be attacked with a pass or a run, the intent is to make offensive play calling unpredictable and thus keep the defense's play "honest", forcing defenders to be prepared for a multitude of possible offensive plays rather than focusing aggressively on one likely play from the offense...

Beyond the basic principle of passing to set up the run, there are few rules that govern Walsh's West Coast Offense... Originally the offense used two split backs, giving it an uneven alignment in which five players aligned to one side of the ball and four players aligned on the other side (with the quarterback and center directly behind the ball). This imbalance forced defenses to abandon their own favored, conventional formations... Although Walsh-influenced teams now commonly use formations with more or fewer than two backs, the offense's unevenness is still reflected in its pass protection philosophy and continues to distinguish it from single back passing offenses... Throughout the years, coaches have added to, adjusted, modified, simplified, and enhanced Bill Walsh's original adaptation of the Paul Brown offense. Formations and plays vary greatly, as does play calling...

What I expect from this years offense is...

To determine if we have or QB.
To determine if we have our backup QB of the future.
To determine if we have a #1 and/or a #2 receiver.
To determine if we have a legitimate center on this team.
To determine if the offensive line needs a complete overhaul.
To determine if we have a tight end on this team.

To expect anything else to me is not relevant. It's the pieces that are relevant, not the whole offense. I expect us to finally know if the guys on this team can play. How much longer does Dozier stay on this team 'developing'? Can Hack or Petty play or even be relied upon as a backup? Is ASJ a real tight end? Are there ANY legitimate starters on the O-line?

With an OL that is worth questioning, there's really no one area to look at IMO? Would love to see the running game become and steady and at least somewhat productive so Hack can have his best chance at succeeding, but everything, including the OL, was neglected during this offseason. Brandon Shell is still an unproven commodity and Beachum is very much unproven especially after the ACL. Will he recover and regain his old form? Is Shell the real deal or was he just lucky playing depth the last quarter of 2016?

So I guess I just answered my own question and that is the OL. How do they develop? Or will it be obvious throughout the season that the OL must be rebuilt? I see the OL as the area that Mac has neglected the most and IMO at least it was the number 1 reason why the offense was so terrible last season..........

Mainejet what I expect to have a similar style offense when Chad Pennington and Curtis Martin were here... that dink and dunk could be effective as long as the o-line stays healthy... we can only hope, but I think they have a good couple of role players in Qvale and Ijalana that can hold down the rotation to keep everyone fresh, my only concern is who is the backup center...

Enunwa will feature in the short aerial attack and do what he does best, make a defender or two miss and break that short yard reception into a big gain... I also expect the same style receiver in rookie Stewart while Hansen will spread the field just enough to force defenses to back off from stacking the box... If we can get any production from the other receivers that is just icing on the cake...

I am unsure what to expect from AS Jenkins and J Leggett but if they can produce something of a security option to whomever is under center along side our dual threat backs then maybe just maybe it won't be as bad as everyone expects it to be...

I also believe since almost everyone is stating the QB competition is close between Hackenberg and McCown then the job no matter what should go to Hackenberg... The first quarter of the season is more than enough to see if he has what it takes, and if he can not improve week to week then turn over the reigns to Petty for the quarter and go from there... If Petty comes out and lays and egg then maybe the season can be salvaged then by putting in McCown... More than likely would be giving up on those two young signal callers benching them for the old one, but either way it will tell us what we should be focusing on next draft.... If the right game plans are put in place both Hack or Petty should be able to grow within the system and develop by playing, lets hope...

If you're developing aqb you believe in, I dont think it would be smart to throw him in a shit o for 4 weeks then move on.

they are saying the margin between McCown and Hackenberg is close, Bowles has consistently praised CH in his progression... so if this is the case that a 50 year veteran can not separate from a second year player then the second year player should be named starter...

the coaching staff won't tell Hack that he will be evaluated over the first four weeks, but if he lays a goose egg then they can either turn to Petty to see what he can do or hand the job to McCown and go from there... If Petty gets his chance and succeeds we now know what we may have... If Petty fails or gets hurt we won't go back to Hackenberg this is the time they put in McCown to salvage the season or whatever he thinks he can accomplish...

we need to know what we have on this roster outside the journeyman McCown being that next years draft is loaded with potential at the quarterback position...

if Hackenberg hasn't figured it out by now, then when? if he fails, then he has tape to learn from and will rectify those issues in practice and next off season... But he needs live reps now, not later... Later is too late...

I don't know about you guys but if Hack or Petty are not the answer at QB, i do not want McCown to come in and salvage anything.
I want the possibility of drafting the best QB in next years draft.
I do not want McCown to come in and somehow, maybe squeak a win or two and knock the Jets out of the #1 overall pick.
Then watch the 49ers or Browns have a franchise QB for the next 15 years and the Jet fans are again stuck with the what ifs.

I expect that we'll find that the OL is every bit as bad as last season? That was the reason why the offense was never able to get going last season. During the offseason, Mac did not sign any free agents to shore up the OL. Sure, he took a flyer on a real wild card in Beachum. But this guy has not played well for two seasons now. Two other teams found out first hand he was not worth holding on to.

Besides that they got a 5th rounder playing time against any other teams fringe players. Many players that probably won't make NFL rosters this season. Brandon Shell did NOT get playing time against normal NFL competition. He looked good playing against scrubs. He has yet to prove himself against even decent NFL competition.

The fan base will learn the hard way that this offense has a decrepit foundation. Offense starts with winning in the trenches. The Jets lack the necessary talent to win in the trenches.

We will find out that Mac still has a ton of work ahead of him. Before this offense starts to do any sort of good things, they must start by building from the trenches outward.

This team will find out that it needs two tackles and a center suitable of starting before the offense can start generating some chemistry, rhythm.

I'm with you 1000% here but I don't expect Mccown to salvage anything. I don't see how anyone can. Maybe I'm missing something here but Mccown is worse then Fitzgarbage, isn't he??? I mean a 13 plus year vet with more then 8 teams he played for and he's supposed to salvage our season from the #1 pick?

If Hack and Petty are garbage and they probably will be, I believe they'll be better then Mccown. Don't you??? With Mccown playing I see the Jets winning less games with him then the other two. So maybe I'm way off here but I just can't see Mccown taking us to 5-6 wins and out of the 1-2 drafting spot. If the other two can't do it, I doubt seriously Mccown will do any better.

-As for the rest of the team, the oline I worry about as much as the QB spot. If those two positions can play half way decent, the Jets can possibly win 5-7 games with Hack or Petty, ONLY!!! Mccown I believe will be worse. If they are horrible then 0-2 wins at most it will be.

-The RBs will be very interesting as well. Forte (if he even is with the team by game day) will probably start but won't finish the year at starter. By week 7-8 Powell or the rookie should be taking over. Really interested in the 23 year old, 5'11", 220 lbs., Brandon Wilds also.

-The WRs are young, hungry and hopefully ready. Not worried about Enunwa at all but Anderson, Marshall and Peake I am. I think Marshall and Peake will step up but Anderson seems to have the head case problems going for him. The two rookies will get true playing time with Decker gone now.

-The TEs should be better this year and catch more then the 5-10 combined from last year. The rookie himself might chip in about 30-40 catches. Seferian-Jenkins might be a threat at times also.

-The D as a whole will be better then most think. Not enough to truly help the team win anything but they will show signs of coming into their own.
