Prior to this season every one and I mean everyone outside the locker room from fans (most of you here), media had this team winning maybe two games to zero... I am not saying there wasn't optimistic feelings that there could be some what a competitive nature set in with the new coaches... But after this team was stripped from certain player(s), the pessimistic Jets fans emerged...
Yet this team had a strong draft, that almost everyone mocked taking two safeties back to back... Yes we took two receivers after that, got a sleeper running back, tight end with upside, a project edge rusher and two developmental corners... So basically this team was written off before the season start... Injuries are always problematic in a rebuilding roster, yes rebuilding but competitive... We lost some say a highly motored individual in Donahue who looked good in preseason... He could of the missing piece on defense that could of helped this season...
Offensively two receivers, and a running back whom are rookies aren't the only rookie on the offense, John Morton the offensive coordinator is also a rookie so there will be growing pains... The plan was to utilize a veteran quarterback to continue the development of our young receiving corps., in Robby Anderson, Charone Peake, Jalin Marshall from last season... Jalin Marshall hasn't returned to the active roster after his suspension and Charone Peake out for the season with an ankle injury makes his future involvement lower than likely... So Robby Anderson having a stellar sophomore campaign... After Anderson, veteran Jermaine Kearse is clearly the number two, neither rookie has been a part of the offense in full this year and probably won't be until next year...
This team in a whole was a project this year with a youth movement to develop the potential, while getting rid of some self centered veteran players that were on the roster last year... They wanted competitiveness and they got that... But in the end this team is still young, without the killer instinct... That instinct will come as they continue to grow this roster...
My complaint is everyone sold out on this team before the season but now are pissed that this team was competitive but unable to finish... My understanding and my appreciation is the core group of young talent entering this season showing the future is bright... Robby Anderson, Darron Lee took the next step... A few rookies showed the potential is there in Jamal Adams, Marcus Maye, Elijah McGuire... And acquiring players like Austin Seferian Jenkins, Jermaine Kearse, Eric Tomlinson, David Baas, reacquiring Demario Davis shows this team can and will improve...
The return next year of Quincy Enunwa, Dylan Donahue, and maybe Lorenzo Mauldin could improve some aspects of this roster... Do we have a quarterback on our roster, many say no and probably so but that will be looked at after this year... Bryce Petty has promise, Hackenberg shows some ability but this is not a concern at the moment... The only reason is for them to have any success is to have an offense that will help them succeed and prior to this season we had potential but no security to surround either of those young signal callers... But now, with the emergence of RA, ASJ, and our triple head at RB shows that any QB under center could succeed... Add in Q on offense the skill position will be better than good moving forward... The only problem is if this offensive line can play better than they are, as of today... Expect one or two moves this upcoming off season on the offensive line but not what most hope for... They are really high Jonathan Harrison moving forward especially they expect Wesley Johnson to be signed away in free agency... They will like delve into free agency to see if they can sign a left tackle moving Beachum to right side... Most will be upset saying why don't we draft, but they will like Shell a late day three developmental prospect is what they will do yet again unless they get someone falling into their lap which is highly unlikely but one never knows...
For those hoping for a QB don't be surprised if we don't take one with our first round selection... We could be inline to draft someone like Saquon Barkley if he decides to move on to this stage... A duo of Barkley and McGuire could be special, this would allow them to take a shot with Hackenberg or Petty at the helm... Corner is a concern, after this season do not see us re-signing Claiborne and expect to move on from Buster Skrine either release or trade... With our new blood at safety they will look to complete the secondary with Roberts and Burris in the mix... If and big if they do not retain Demario Davis they will look to draft his replacement... It will definitely be an interesting off season but the roster turnover was a complete success... With that, I fully expect Todd Bowles and this coaching staff back next year to continue the development of this roster because they have exceeded expectations of what was to be a win-less season...
