This upcoming off season there are a lot of decisions to be had... One of the most pressing matters is fixing this lack luster group of defensive backs... The main question, do we restructure Darrelle Revis' contract and position change him from corner to safety or do we simply release him n move on?
Corner Marcus Williams a restricted free agent, will likely receive a tender offer albeit a low-end or second rounder... Depending on if the team feels they don't want to chance on losing him to another team trying to poach him for free on a low-end tender...
Darryl Roberts has potential and is under contract for another two years after this year... None of his contract is guaranteed so the team could waive him at any point with no dead loss if they feel he isn't the right fit...
Buster Skrine seems like they gambled when they signed him... He is no better than a nickel corner being asked to play outside, unsuccessfully... Skrine would be better served in a zone coverage to play off man with ability to watch the quarterback while playing in an area rather than being asked to play press coverage... If they decide to move on from him either simple release or trade the dead loss after this season would be minimal... What is he worth, if we attempt to trade him and who would want him? Debatable...
Darrelle Revis his majority of guarantees are dried up this off season... There is some dead loss/guarantees but not like the first two (2015/2016)... Should we attempt to restructure his contract, it won't be to play corner next year... With his acknowledgement that his body is breaking down, do we tempt fate and move him to safety... If we change his position does he offer anything but an off-injured out shape intelligent football player... Is there a chance of us simply saying good-bye or does he say good-bye and retire?
Nick Marshall claimed off waivers, an undrafted free agent signed through 2017, so he is under contract for next season... The question is, is he worth a roster spot? An ex-quarterback converted to corner maybe should of attempted to convert to safety...
Juston Burris, this year's rookie is slowly developing showing promise... Only time will tell if he can be a fixture in our back end...
Bryson Keeton, another un-drafted rookie with the size and length one would desire at this position... He is likely one of our ERFAs... Figure at least he will compete for a roster spot...
Dexter McDougle seems he is hanging on to our practice squad this year when we cut bait with Dee Milliner... Dex has potential could he make a run next season to make the active roster... McDougle drafted in 2014 is likely to be an ERFA, if he was on the active roster he is under contract through next season... Will be interesting if he will be here or not...
Calvin Pryor seems like a lock to be here long term... For a team that is in rebuild mode most likely he could be a trade chip...
Marcus Gilchrist like Buster Skrine signed at the beginning of this regime's start has guarantees that dry up after this season and could become a release/trade player... Gilchrist unlike Skrine shows promise more times than not and could stick around for the full duration of his four year deal...
Rontez Miles will be an unrestricted free agent this upcoming off season and is likely to have suitors in the division... Can the team re-sign him? A fan favorite would be disappointing to see him leave in free agency...
Antonio Allen with his second stint with gang green, seems to be like a lost puppy under Todd Bowles style defense... Unlikely to see him back next season...
Doug Middleton a surprising preseason sensation has luckily stuck on the practice squad so far all season... He will be a ERFA, if he makes it to the off season...
Ronald Martin Jr. will likely be given the chance to make the active roster next year likely to replace Antonio Allen's current roster spot...
all in all this secondary has potential but there is not enough depth across the board and one would think heading into free agency and the draft the Jets will likely pick up one maybe two or three corners to add to this unit...
