Who the HELL is our starting Center?

Jonathan Harrison is a good role player, had some good play last season but moving forward he isn't touted as an every down, game starting center... His snap to block stance is slow, that is being nice so teams want to pressure Sammy D, all they have to do is pressure up the middle... We missed not once but three times to garner a day one starter at center, reaching for other positions after taking an Edge guy with questionable characteristics where we could of plugged a major whole on the offensive line to give our young stud a chance not to get killed...

Maybe the rumors are true about Maccagnan verse Gase but at the end of the day we needed to fix this OL...

Edoga was a questionable decision because he is a right tackle at best, so the reports about Shell being back and healthy must be a lie... Funny thing here on some picks and some undrafted signings the NFL comparison for players were with current Jets players and if that is why we drafted them, God Help Us...

It's his job to lose. He was much better than Long, who we all loved when we signed him.

Long was hurt but it didn't help that he had Carpenter playing dead... But then Long moved to guard and the line was better even with Harrison at center... But now Long gone, a new scheme trading for Kelechi Osemele, this will force Harrison to either step up and improve his snap to blocking quickness or it will be a matter of time until Darnold is in a wheel chair or crutches...

There is an alternative option but may be far fetched... Beachum, Osemele, Winters, Compton, Shell as the starting rotation... But now wondering if Shell is really healthy drafting another right tackle...

I think Edoga will eventually transition to LT. I watched a clip of him at that position practicing against the top edge rushers at senior bowl practice. He didn't look out of place at all. Check out the 9 minute mark.

Edoga is a smooth, athletic run-blocker and an uneven, unrefined pass protector, which creates a challenge in projecting him. His ability to get to blocks in a variety of positions from his initial stance is something that cannot be taught. While some of his flaws in pass pro can be coached up, there are physical deficiencies that could plague him throughout his career. To become a successful NFL starter, he needs to check the strength, maturity, and durability boxes as early as possible in his career.

Needs Improvement:
  • Unusual build with long legs, thin calves and shorter torso
  • Core power misses the mark
  • Lacks fundamentals and control in his pass sets
  • Weight distribution for pass slides drifts outside and back
  • Must eliminate windup in his punch
  • Speed-to-power can walk him into pocket
  • Inconsistent base width with footwork that isn't repeatable from snap to snap
  • Falls forward into contact in effort to manufacture anchor
  • Slow to find work after his rusher voids
  • Narrow drive base allows opponents to escape from his power zone
  • Nonchalant as block finisher, allowing a win to turn into a loss

To me from a starting standpoint he translates to interior right now could be Osemele's replacement after next year at best... He has a lot to do to even get a shot at right tackle forget left tackle at this point in time...

I'm assuming Osemele will help Harrison much more than Long or Carpenter.

Osemele is an upgrade over Carpenter but he is known more for his run blocking ability... Especially pulling guard... Carpenter lost a step as he got older, but his game was all about pass protection, but as he got heavier footed he became a liability in pass protection as we saw last season... Long fit the scheme and always was a guard who excelled at pass protection over run blocking but his run blocking improved playing center for the Redskins... Being hurt for us, showed that Carpenter's time was over when they moved him to guard...

Osemele is an extremely strong, natural run blocker. He is explosive off the line and can visibly jolt defenders back either with a strong arm -- extension or a ferocious uncoiling of his hips. Once engaged, he can ignite a powerful, high-kneed leg drive to keep defenders at bay. If Osemele can learn to play with consistency and channel his explosiveness, he could be an overwhelming blocker who is dominant at the next level. His natural ability is apparent in his play.

Our only hope is trading for someone... The Saints drafted a center last year in Will Clapp an SEC center from LSU, then they just took Erik McCoy this year from TAMU... Now they have four centers on their roster, if I was Maccagnan I would be on the phone to see if Clapp is available via trade... He can step in day one as a starter for us with Harrison as the backup role player at both center and guard...

That is just my take...

The team has a different opinion of Harrison than you. They obviously liked him enough to give him the nod. I didn’t see any problems with him while he played. Just because he was a backup for several years doesn’t mean that’s his destiny. Maybe he has matured enough to start. We’ll find out.

Im betting we pick up an UFA for depth.

I think we should have drafted a center, but I don't think Harrison did too bad as a starter. I'm going to trust the coaches especially the OL coach. I don't trust Mac one bit, but if those coaches think they can work with Harrison then I'm fine with that.

So Harrison stinks because he’s not Mawae or Mangold?

The Black and White world of Jets fans.

When you add them all up they all stink...black or white you pick it. As an individual he is ok but not the type you want to build on.

"With Spencer Long gone, the Jets will be looking for a new center to anchor their offensive line in 2019. Jonotthan Harrison certainly won’t be that player if the Jets bring him back, but he’s a serviceable backup who provided much-needed depth at a position the Jets struggled with this past season.

In his second year with the Jets, Harrison started eight games when Long either sat due to injury or was moved to guard following his poor play. Of the 506 snaps Harrison played this season, 300 were protection snaps and on those plays, Harrison allowed three sacks, two QB hits, eight QB pressures and committed four penalties. Not the best stats in the world, but certainly not the worst and definitely better than Long’s. "

Now could he get better...maybe? That is up to the guys coaching him to know. But as a whole they have stunk for a couple of years........A backup starting for us...well that is not good IMO. Lets move upward from here ASAP. As the great Curly Howard would say Suck, Suck ,Suck lolo. But I hope he becomes the best center ever...so stay positive.

Hey i would take Schmitt or or joe fields or jim sweeney

I can't believe that they let Paradis get out of the building but then Maybe he wasn't really interested in the Jets to begin with. Harrison might step up his game this season. You never know but Edoga, a guy a couple of people, not me, unless it's an emergency fill in, think might be our next LT also played center in school. So maybe they are going to try to groom him for the job. He doesn't fit the typical center profile but he has some experience there. We might also be able to find a suitable replacement in the undrafted free agent group before it's over. Like G said they passed on a couple of promising centers in the draft and you have to wonder why.

Maybe this guy, if his knee is healed, someone Sam will recognize from USC, center Toa Lobendahn. One of Jets undrafted free agent signings.

I'm not crazy about Harrison at C1. I hope that Pollack can make the most of his skill set, but I just feel like this is a continuation of an incomplete offensive line upgrade. The line is better than last year, but how much?

From what I understand he wasn't interested and if you read his latest comments the Panthers were the team he and his agent wanted. He wasn't coming here...
