J82,
The trouble with a QB competition is the divided reps. If you have two guys competing and its a real competition, then your eventual starter is only getting 50% of the first team reps. If you have three guys competing, your eventual starter in only getting 33 to 34% of the first team reps, and if you have four, its 25% of the first team reps. That said, when you are installing a new system with a new OC, ideally your starting QB is getting 100% of the first team reps, or close to it, cause its the only way to develop a real chemistry with your offense. Thats why its always preferable to name your starter early, particularly when you're installing a new system.
The other problem with QB competitions is they tend to divide the locker-room.
I don't care what the breakdown of reps is -- give Geno 100% and see what he does with them. Fitzpatrick likely doesn't need them anyway, and CAN'T take them until he's physically able to.
It still doesn't mean Geno has to be named the "no-brainer" starter in May.
Again, if that's just coach-speak, then it's irrelevant. But all we have is what they're saying, and based on that they have WAY more belief in Geno than his history deserves.
Now, do they have more insight than I do? Infinitely more. But our last CS gave the kid too much credit too, and look where they ended up . . .
