Why do other teams sign players at age 35+ with a one day contract so that they can retire with that team they once played for?

& we sign 26 year old's to a five year contract so they can retire early???????

I wish a contact would be based on results not the past.

You can base a contract on incentives, but obviously the player will take the other offer with the guaranteed money.
