Jets DE Eligible to Return to Training Camp Practices; Two Left on Physically Unable to Perform List

Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson has come off the Active/Physically Unable to Perform List and is eligible to return to training camp practices.

Wilkerson began camp on the Active/PUP as he continued to rehab the leg he broke in last season's final game at Buffalo on Jan. 3. Last week he said his leg was getting better each day. "It's still a process for me," he said. "I'm just going to keep working hard rehabbing the leg and doing whatever the trainers and head coach have got for me."

With Wilkerson being activated today and RB Khiry Robinson activated Monday, that leaves two players on Active/PUP — RT Breno Giacomini and WR Devin Smith.

Muhammad Wilkerson is ready to roll.

The New York Jets' star defensive end is eligible to practice for the first time during this year's training camp after being activated from the physically unable to perform list Tuesday.

A broken leg suffered in the final game of the 2015 campaign forced Wilkerson to spend his entire offseason working through rehab. Now healthy in advance of New York's first preseason contest, he seems on track to be at 100 percent in Week 1.

The Jets used the franchise tag to keep Wilkerson off the open market earlier this offseason. While a lack of progress in contract talks appeared to have Wilkerson poised to play out the one-year tender, the two sides struck a long-term agreement just before the July 15 negotiation deadline.

Wilkerson's five-year, $86-million deal - which includes $53.5 million in guarantees - makes him one of the highest-paid defenders in league history.

The monster extension follows a dominant five-year stretch to start his career in which he tallied 36.5 sacks and 184 tackles, suiting up for all but three games.

The big contract guy gets his first chance to get on the field Tuesday. Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson (leg) has been activated from the PUP list, and is now cleared to full practice for the Jets.

Wilkerson broke his leg in the Jets’ Week 17 loss to the Bills to end the 2015 season. He signed a 5-year deal worth as much as $86 million with $54 million of that guaranteed over the first three years of the deal.

His placement on the PUP list to start training camp wasn’t a surprise, but his contract was. It seemed Wilkerson was heading toward playing the 2016 season on the franchise tag, a 1-year deal worth approximately $15.7 million before an announcement was made right after the deadline to negotiate with franchise-tagged players ended July 15.

Wilkerson is a key component to a rising Jets’ defense, one that should be among the best all-around units in the NFL.

The Jets host the Jaguars Thursday in the first preseason game for both teams.
