Will there be a true competition between Fant and Becton?

Immediately before the 2021 NFL season ended for the New York Jets, I reported the team’s offensive coaches wanted to move forward with Fant as their left tackle. Many of these coaches said they were ready to move on from Becton, the first-round pick from the 2020 NFL Draft that’s not been very dependable as of late.

Today, NFL beat writers for the New York Jets reported from the Senior Bowl the news that there will be an open competition between Fant and Becton for the left tackle spot next season — this according to head coach Robert Saleh.

And while that may be true, NFL sources close to the situation tell me that Fant has been informed the left tackle position is his to lose. I have confirmed the rumor that the Jets are trying to extend Fant’s contract as the NFL veteran enters the final season of the three-year deal he signed in 2020.

since Fant is the present holder of that position, telling him it's his to lose is not controversial....and plays to the greater good of inspiring competition amongst the roster.........NFL will be singing his praises next year. this is a quality HC.

If this story is in any way remotely true, then Becton is on the block . It makes absolutely no sense to play a disgruntled LT anywhere along your OL when you can trade him and move on . The fish did it and so can the Jets . Especially if you can get a 1st round pick for him, even a late 1st .

Great post. We just need to extend Fant. Becton can't be trusted yet and maybe never. He might not even fit what this staff wants. I agree he is on the block.

no Fant ended the season as the left tackle, but Becton gets healthy, fit and steps on the field he has all the making to unseat George... Fant played well but his career has a few good years left and Becton literally his career just started... Motivation, that is Robert Saleh's gift as many former players talk about why they love to play for him...

George Fant played well but he is not the top tackle on the roster, and Becton just needs to show up and do his thing from there it will all work out... Win or lose who wins, the team...

His only job is to get in shape. Its not that hard.

Mekhi Becton was an 11th overall pick. Hasn't even entered his 3rd year yet. And looked like the most dominant Jet I've seen (since Revis) while on the field as a Rookie.

I wouldn't trade him.

But if they did?

Hopefully it's for a top 15 overall pick in order to immediately draft his replacement and not miss a beat.

And if not?

And If he's not built to play Franchise LT? Then why not move him to RG and create a dominant LG/RG duo in Alijah Vera-Tucker and Mekhi Becton?

I just think it's too early to quit on this kid before first seeing him play as a 3rd year player next year.

And for what it's worth he allowed 0 sacks week 1 while Zach Wilson got sacked 6x.

He also allowed zero sacks weeks 2-18.

So keep Fant for what I believe is the last year of his deal. I'd still draft one of the OL early. If both Fant and Becton are ready to go, have Fant play at LT, Becton at RT, and the high pick move into RG. Then, after a year, see which one of Becton or the draft pick has most earned the chance to slide out to LT.

I love Becton's length with his kick slides. When he is on the field, he can neutralize speed rushers just with the length of his slide. But having him at RT, opening holes in the outside zone ground scheme, would be something to see. And Fant's athleticism is well suited for LT.

that's the strategy I would employ.......it can be the draft or Fa to add to the OL.

I bet that we could get Sean Rhyan from UCLA for RT and Darian Kinnard at RG in the second and Cade Mays at C in the 3rd or 4th.
A complete overhaul of the line in one flail swoop.

Hopefully Rhyan is ready to go, but Fant & Becton beat him out for the starting gigs at Tackle.

Fant is a proven commodity, and teams always lose Tackles along the way...all of a sudden, we have a very nice poker chip for team who needs to rent a Tackle for a very nice draft pick in 2023.

if we take @Seaver41 and @SackExchange's advice in loading up on OL, Trader Joe's investment into Fant can be used for the future while it has already paid dividends.

Fant was a great signing!!!

Agree that Fant was a great signing, but the guy i hope we draft at OT is Penning. Johnson and Strange later on would complete the rebuild.

"It's his to lose" doesn't mean there isn't a competition. It only means that Fant is the favorite. I said this in other threads...Becton may be better suited for RT. Let him put some weight on and be more of a mauler.

He’s got a nasty disposition and a bolder size small school chip on his shoulder. Jets have never had an OT like this guy . Could be Brick with an attitude.

I don’t think that he’s ready to start at OT right now, but he could be by opening day if everything goes well.
