Will this season be as bad as 1996?

Will this season be as bad as 1996?
It's actually a very valid question. What we are looking at as Jets fans is absolute rock bottom. The front office has completely dismantled this team. I shutter to think just how depressing this season will be? But could it possibly be any worse than Rich Kotite's 1996 1-15 team?

Objectively speaking this team has more unproven players than the 1996 team did. However, that's not necessarily a bad thing, these players could turn out to be much better than those players in 1996? It shouldn't be hard. I also have confidence that this draft class is the first good draft this team has had since 2006. I am optimistic Mac yielded 3 starters in this draft, possibly more.

So lets hear it from you. Do you think there's any way this season could take on the same aura as 1996? Is it even possible?

The record might be the same, but I believe there is a lot of young guys with lots of talent. The excitement to me is there are 3 really good QB prospects for next next so losing won't bother me. There should be a lot of hungry players not just a bunch of veterans collecting a paycheck. We dumped old, unproductive players and set up the salary cap for the future.

I actually believe this team will be 2-14. Double the amount of the 1996 team, but still very bad. And most of all in position to take a top notch QB in 2018........

1996 was actually my first year being a Jet fan since we got season tickets (I was 10 years old at the time). Even though we went to a few games in 1995, I don't have memories from 95 like I do from 96. I remember bits and pieces of this season and did not care or realize what 1-15 meant. Then in 1997 the tide turned and I cared and understood a little more. By 1998 I got my heart sliced into pieces after we blew the AFC title game.

No, I don't think we will be as bad as the 1996 team. I think this team unfortunately will win 4-5 games.

All depends on the oline and QB (hopefully that will be Hack.) If they suck, then the Jets win 0-2 games (max probably). If they play half-way decent, the Jets win 3-5 games. Truly not expecting it but if they play decent, then can win 6-7 (seriously doubt that). I'm thinking more along the lines of 3-5 wins, in hopes that Hack and the oline play half-way decent at least. This team has the talent at all positions and I have no doubts in that. So regardless of the records, I can't see this team being as bad as 1996. What I do have question is do we have the talent at oline and QB???

The answer to this question really depends on the coaching staff and the growth of the QB. If this coaching staff does a great job, this team has a chance to be more competitive than people might think. The defense is talented enough to be a top 15 defense. It may take them a while to come together, but by mid-season if everyone stays healthy, the D will keep them in a lot of games.

On offense, there are a lot of unknowns. The WRs are unproven, the RBs are solid, and the O-line needs some of the players to grow up pretty quick. The QB is obviously most important. If Hackenberg wins the job and let's say best case scenario - he throws 20 TDs and 15 INTs, this team can win 6 games assuming the defense does their part. And if Hackenberg has that kind of a year, there's definitely some hope for him.

And Special Teams still can help you win games - if ST improves that is great step forward.

So a lot of ifs and a lot needs to come together - but I am not convinced this team is going to have a 2 win season. If everything goes badly, sure, they could easily go 2-14, 3-13, or worse. I just think this team has some young talented players that could take the next step. If they do, this team will at least be competitive in most of the games this year.

This scares me. I have the worst feeling we are going to win one game more than will land us one of the top 3 QBs

If you've been a Jet fan for some time than it's normal to think this. I have visions of the Jets needing to lose their last game against NE to get the first pick for the consensus number one QB and the kicking a last minute 56 yard FG to win. Also knowing the Jets needing to lose Belicheck started all second teamers for the entire game being the Pats were already 14-1 and nothing to play for. UGH!!!!

Still remember the Jets winning the last game in 1980 (4-12) moving one spot behind the Giants who than drafted Lawrence Taylor. Could you imaging him with the original Sack exchange.
