Woody has 'long-term confidence' in current regime

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is standing by his men.


Speaking from the NFL owners' meetings in Houston, Johnson gave a vote of confidence to coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan. The team's awful start has prompted faint rumblings about their job security.


"We've got 10 games to go,” Johnson said in an interview with the NFL Network. “I’m very confident with Todd Bowles and Mike. I think we’ve got an excellent team [of leaders]. I really respect Todd; I know he’s doing what he’s going to do. It’s football. He’s a good coach. I have long-term confidence in him and in Mike and in their teams.


“That’s the way I feel. Onward and outward, we’ve had a tough schedule, it’s no excuse. We’ve been in some games. But Monday night was … we have to be better than that.”


Johnson's comments came two days after ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported that Johnson was upset and frustrated by the terrible start.


For now, let's take Johnson's endorsement at face value. It's way too early to start reading between the lines. Ten games in the NFL is an eternity, and things can change quickly, as we witnessed with Bowles' change of heart with the quarterback situation. I also remember Thanksgiving, 2005, when Johnson was questioned about his embattled coach, Herm Edwards.


"We love Herm," Johnson said.


A month or so later, he sent him to the Kansas City Chiefs. So, yeah, stuff happens. My advice: Be patient and let it play out.

This is as much owner speak as anything I have ever seen. There is NO way Woody is going to throw his CS under the bus approximately midseason.

I believe Woody thinks far different about Todd Bowles. I believe he is rapidly losing patience with him and although I think Bowles will ultimately get fired after the 2017 season, Woody will be keeping tabs on what the fans have to say.

There is a chance Todd Bowles could get fired after this season, I think it is going to take a debacle far worse than what is currently happening. Like if the Jets go 3-13 or worse Todd Bowles would more than likely get fired at the end of the season.......

I agree with you. Woody ultimately bows down to the pressure of the fans almost always. He'll probably fire Bowles after this season but Mac is safe.

is starting Geno a move driven by owner/GM to tank the season and get draft position? Crazy, right? But is it? Geno won't reverse fortunes, so is he in to ensure they don't muddle their way to a middling 7 win season? Not only Geno, but I imagine after that it will be Petty who at this stage would be expected to struggle. It's just curious that Bowles has been so adamant about using Fitz and avoiding Geno that for him to do an about face seems forced. In other words, i given the dreaded vote of confidence, would Bowles then be more open to exploring his options at QB for the future?

Jets are in a quandry at QB. I can't fathom them carrying 4 QBs again next year - but it would seem likely unless they cut one of Petty or Hackenberg....assuming the Jets land a top 10 draft pick. Even then you still need a guy with experience on the roster. So as of now it would be Petty, Hackenberg, and some vet they bring in. They almost must draft another QB in the continuing search for THE guy.

As G said let it play out. I have not given up on TB yet. He is a good man! Lets see if he can grow into a great coach.

Woody has done everything a good owner can, tried to hire the right GM/HC & spent money on presumed franchise players Revis & Wilk who both has played a third of what they had before contract. I've cooled off some after that HUMILIATING BEAT DOWN of Jets who looked like a College team of LAZY players. Defense Williams was only play hard player, Offense Marshall . Hammer needs to come down starting with Gailey & his nonsense sitting in stands & then Wilk /Revis needs to be exampled. After that Bowles & then Mackenburg needs to start & if a Bust Mikey Mac needs to be fired.
