Would it be a mistake for Jets to draft another QB?

The Jets drafted Bryce Petty in 2015, then Christian Hackenberg a year later. Would it be a mistake to take Mitch Trubisky or Deshaun Watson in the 2017 NFL Draft? 3/7/17 (Video by Connor Hughes | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com)

If the QB drafted turns out to be great then it cannot possibly be a mistake.

No it would not be a mistake
not with the QBs on the roster
i don't care if they draft a QB every draft until the day I die
and the Jets are shortening my life span

The trouble is, the available QB's in this draft class don't have a lot of potential to become franchise QB's. It would make more sense to fill other holes on the team this draft. Then if neither Petty nor Hackenberg pan out this season, use next year's draft to try to get a QB. Yes, if you draft a QB who becomes the franchise guy, no one will complain. But where will you be if you pick up a third QB who is a second-stringer at best?

Having 4 QB's make no sense. There just is not enough practice time to develop 3 of them so you only draft one if you are planning in cutting Petty or Hackenburg now

Besides, a good QB does not offset a bad O-Line, lack of edge rusher, weak secondary etc, Why put a young QB into a flawed offense? This team needs to build from the basics first.

Part of his point that he didn't get into, for me, is that they DID draft Petty and Hackenberg, albeit with a fourth and second round pick. They scouted those guys drafted them and then got to watch them in practice and all that stuff and maybe they don't think they have it to succeed.
As a fan i'd be REAL skeptical to think that they NOW know how to scout the QB position to be able to pick a franchise QB.
I know the Jets have to keep swinging until they hit one out of the park but to watch all of the strikeouts before hand is very painful.
What will it say about Maccagnan and the scouting department if Paxton Lynch wins the starting job and has a stellar 2nd season and Hackenberg cannot get on the field this season.

Jets needs to draft a QB every year til they get it right. But this years QB Class NONE are worthy of a top 10 pick. Clemson QB shows a lot of heart & grit & might be the best in this years Draft. But at 6th? Good QB Draft next year is good to Draft in top 10. Whatever JETS Draft this year it has to be MUST PLAY/PLAYERS!!! First 3 Rounds has to be Players that have immediate impact making Jets better. No more wasting Picks on QB's like Hackenburg who wasnt on any NFL Teams QB Draft board til 7th round or a small LB thats fast. Jets needs are great from messing up in Drafts the last 6 years of Idzik & Mike Mac. Jets needs LB's-Safeties-WR's-TE's-QB's-O Linemen-CB's...just about every position on Jets, so Mikey needs to be dead on on first 3 rounds.

O-line this year and QB next. The chances of the Jets getting a franchise QB in this draft are thin in MHO.
The state of the O-line right now decreases those chances even more

Depends on where and who... But I have said it a million times... Keep swinging till you hit a homerun

NO! For the sake of every Jets fan, please build the defense. Either draft Jamal Adams at #6 and a CB at #39 or trade back to the middle of the first and draft Gareon Conley, Jabrill Peppers and Charles Harris. At least give us half of the games to enjoy next year. The offense will be brutal but the defense could be fun. I really think Adams could have a HUGE effect on this defense. Give us something!!!

If Jets takes a QB at 6 the only one IMO is Watson of Clemson. Like I said before I dont think any of this years QB are worthy of a top pick in Draft, but if Jets must...Watson. Who do you think Jets should take?

Next years Draft Jets needs to be in top 2 to get one of the top QB's in the Draft. This gives Jets 2 Legit QB's to be a franchise Jet QB with Watson this year & top QB next year. Looking at this years Jets schedule I see Jets winning maybe 3 games, Browns,Chargers,Tampa. We lose all Division games & Oakland-Jags-Denver-Panthers & the other 3. Best record Jets 3-13. & maybe 1 st round ,first pick QB in 2018 Draft?

Agreed. The QB position is so important, you draft one until you find your guy.

I wouldn't even mind it if they drafted another QB and Petty or Hack ended up being the guy, because until you're sure you have your guy, you keep chasing.

Not at #6. No way. They need an impact player immediately.

I'm not sure I agree with this. The reason I'd be more inclined to take a long-term prospect, at any position, over a guy whose returns will be immediate is that I think the Jets are going to struggle, with or without an impact player at #6. Why draft for 2017, when the team isn't going to be competitive anyway?

A team whose window was closing should draft an immediate impact player. If the Pats, for example, got an early pick for Garoppolo, they are in a win-now, mortgage the future mode. The Jets, though? Total opposite end of the spectrum.

but the questions/problems with that are:

lets say we keep petty, hackenberg & draft a kid with a legitimate chance to be an NFL QB.. how do we get all three of them to get enough reps??

do we carry four QBs two years running, or do we cut a guy we just paid 6 million to??

Tough call. I'd say you carry four for this year, and then let McCown walk if any of the three show signs of being the guy. If any of them show that they are absolutely not the guy, you cut bait with them.

At least that's how I'd handle it. It's a sacrifice you have to make.

If we draft a qb this year several things could happen

1. Hack or Petty wins the starting job so you cut McCown Keep those 2 on the roster and Put whoever you draft on the PS. Unless it's a high pick who won't make it to the PS then you carry all 3
2. Neither Hack or Petty win the starting Job and McCown does. You cut whichever one doesn't look like they can ever be a starter. the drafted QB is #3 or PS again (same rules as #1 apply)
3. Drafted QB wins the starting Job than you cut McCown if either one or both Hack and Petty show they are continuing to progress if one isn't you cut that one 2 and only carry 2 QB's or sneak that one onto the PS if possible
4. The 3 young QBs show progress so you cut McCown to give all 3 of them the opportunity to battle it out, Start the season with whomever is looking the best if they fail move on to the next guy if they fail move onto the next guy... they all fail you draft high next year and grab Sam Darnold or Josh Rosen or Josh Allen

#2 actually being the worst option

And yes I think McCown is the 6 million dollar guy to teach the kids the system and be gone by the end of training camp.... There is no reason to have him as a starter.. NONE.. The only reason he is here is cause he was with Morton in New Orleans and he probably will be familiar with what type of offense Morton will run and the terminology he will be using. So with young guys like Hack and Petty he will be needed in the QB room. And I don't think $6 million is a lot of money to possibly help one of these young guys learn the system and hopefully take to it like a duck to water.

Of course that could be wishful thinking on my part but it makes sense to me.
