Year in Review (with Grades)

Well…. Another season basically over. Saw much I liked and some things it didn’t like. I’ll give position group grades and touch on some individuals ( no grades there). Feel free to comment and remember this is just my opinion only.

Lets start at the top:

Ownership. C. Woody didn’t do anything stupid, so he gets an average grade

GM. B. I think JD has done a decent job. 2020 picks are still in question…. But 2021 picks were a success. He also found some decent players off the waiver wire . If he manages this offseason well and does well in the draft….

HC. C. Saleh is a young HC and is learning as he goes. In time I feel he will be a quality HC in the league. He has some clock management issues and communication issues, but those are easily resolved as he gains experience.

OC. B+. I like Lafluer ( although I didn’t early on). I think he is innovative and tries to fit his system to player strength rather than the other way around. Only in his first year, I think he will grow into a top notch OC in time. At least the offense is a watchable product

DC. D. Jury is out on Ulbrich. To his defense, they played a lot of rookies and he dealt with a lot on injuries. Willing to see what he can do with more talent, more experienced players and less injuries

Now onto the position grades:
QB. B-
Zach has shown progress. He has all the ability, now time to pair him up with a few more weapons (and get our current weapons healthy). The kid is bright and that’s the main thing. He will continue to learn, and my expectation is he will show significant improvement in year 2

RB. B+ Love MC (although I hope he isn’t injury prone). He isn’t a bell cow back, but and excellent starting point to build off. I also like Coleman, Johnson and Walther. I don’t think this is a draft need

OL B- Great improvement in the 2nd half of the year. AVT was as advertised and I’m a fan of LDT. If Becton can get his act together and Fant is ok ( after injury), I feel we are fairly set here. The most impressive thing is that Lafluers scheme seems to work even with backup caliber OL ( ie Feeney and Edoga). I’m sure we will draft here at some point, but not sure in the first round

TE. D. Enough said. Although I think Yeboah shows some promise. This is a major need in FA or the draft

WR. C. Very impressed with Berrios and he absolutely has to be back. Moore shows much promise, although he may be a bit injury prone. I honestly didn’t get to see enough of Davis. He went out before the line got better. His route running is good, but he does drop a few to many for me. Cole, Smith and Mims are probably gone . Definitely a need here via draft, FA or both

Defense
DL. C.
That was probably the grade after Lawson went down anyways. QW had lots of double teams, and personally I think we overpaid for JFM. We definitely need another EDGE and personally I thought JFM was better inside. Rankins is decent depth and Foley was a bit disappointing ( although not yesterday). Huff got off to a nice start, but was injured for most of the middle part of the season. I view him as a situational rusher at best. This position group is a definite need in FA or the draft

LB. C. Mosely played very well this season, but he is slowing down coverage wise and is really a 2 down LB at this stage. Very impressed with QW. As a waiver wire p/u…. He was outstanding and with another year to learn, I can only see improvement. Again, this is another position that must be addressed in FA or the draft…. Remainder of LB….. Meh. ( although Sherwood may be promising )

CB. B+. I really like this crew. Hall has been outstanding and I like Elchols. His game seems to be improving as he gets more experience. MCII is a quality slot corner as a rookie and Guidry and Dunn are fine as depth. I don’t see a need here

S. INC Joyner and Maye wont be back. Davis has improved but there are still mistakes being made. It’s been such a hodge podge group all season that its probably unfair to grade due to lack of cohesion between players, although I did like what I saw from Pinnock at safety . I still think this is a need via draft or FA

ST. B. Mann got hurt early….. so I’m willing to give him another year. Pineiro has been a welcome p/u, accurate but not a strong legged kicker. Would like to see Amendola with another offseason under his belt. Berrios…. As a returner…. Enough said.

Thats my take……. Thoughts?????

kicker nailed a 51 yarder so leg strength not a weakness but I could see it barely got there....so yes an upgrade......possibly a draft pick or top of the post draft FA signees.

Woody & Chris don't get a grade they need to stay out of things period...

Front Office Led by Joe Douglas have done a stellar job to this point in a major ground up rebuild will strike out here and there but mainly cost efficient options that don't hurt the team's capitol... A+

Coaching staff have a plan they installed... They implemented a specific design that takes weeks to almost a full season to get the entire roster to excel in and it has been a bumpy first season with Covid and injuries but all in all they have shown the capability from all three phases to have that plan and to grow the TEAM... B+ with room to grow into that A+ coaching staff...

Offense:
QB - Incomplete until year 3 will I grade him (He has shown improvement but still in crucial moments has those HERO mements)
RB - A- Day 3 Sleeper 3 Down Starter from my alma mater UNC, add in Austin Walter - These 2 show immense potential
WR - A- Elijah Moore & Braxton Berrios are key cogs - Corey Davis shows potential and Denzel Mims & Jeff Smith work in progress
TE - F+ Brandon Dillon could be a steal of poaching, Kenny Yeboah a receiving threat potential the others roster fillers
OL - B- Becton, AVT, McGovern, Fant are the building blocks with need one starter - Edoga, McDermott, Feeney are solid role players

Defense:
DE - B+ Injuries, Covid Killed what was suppose to be a strength... Rotation playing time stats are not where fans expect them to be but these guys did mostly their jobs and for that there is potential
DT - B- Outside Quinnen Williams, Sheldon Rankins and Folorunso Fatukasi it has been a work in progress with injuries and covid but there is potential in growth terms here but just with the top 3 can not blame them for their snap count production
LB - C+ Youth, Injuries and CJ Mosley coverage inability puts this position group as a work in progress
CB - A+ We have our three starters, we have two additional options that can spot start, strongest position group on the team
SAF - B- Too many injuries on this roster... Maye, Joyner and a few other practice squad options... Ashtyn Davis taken the next step in his development... Poaching Elijah Riley was a good move... Converting Jason Pinnock to safety bolster the future at this position group... But potential is there...

PT B- Braden Mann has his ups and downs but he has been solid
PK C+ Kicker Number 22 and he could be the guy unless we draft someone else

Overall Grade for the Team B+

You were a bit more bullish on the team overall than me, but appreciate your response and opinion

Guys I only have 2 things .

I think we may have the best QB in our division.

Our DL and linebackers are a disgrace but both units have young talent that needs additional help .

Can't wait until next year with the added experience that all of the young guys got, a full year in the system for everyone, and the new toys from the coming offseason. Its going to be fun.
