Welcome officially to end of 2017, the actual off season doesn't start yet but there is so much to talk about...

Season grade: Average. Clearly, this grade is curved because a 5-11 record, by any objective measure, is terrible. In this case, it's important to remember the big picture. The Jets were supposed to be awful in 2017 -- we're talking Cleveland Browns awful -- and they managed to be competitive, beating a few good teams along the way.

Season in review: The title of the season should be, "The Team That Couldn't Finish." The Jets were a three-quarter team, pushing some of the best teams in the league into the fourth quarter -- and collapsing, sometimes in stunning fashion. They were outscored in the fourth quarter, 140-64, which explains why they lost six games by eight or fewer points. Their personnel deficiencies, masked for 45 minutes, were exposed in the final 15. We could throw out a bunch of stats and theories, but let's not complicate the issue: The NFL is a fourth-quarter league, and the Jets simply didn't have enough talent to survive in that crucible. And don't blame it on the perennial quarterback question. Josh McCown was solid, sometimes terrific, and they still went 5-8 in games he started. They couldn't overcome an inconsistent offensive line and a lack of playmakers on both sides of the ball.

Biggest play of season: For many reasons, it was Austin Seferian-Jenkins' controversial non-touchdown in the Week 6 loss to the New England Patriots. A short touchdown reception was overturned by replay because he "didn't survive the ground," fueling the what's-a-catch? debate in the NFL. The Jets got the double whammy because it was ruled a fumble out of the end zone, resulting in a touchback. Instead of cutting the Patriots' lead to three in the fourth quarter, the Jets were left fuming over a play that typified their season.

He said it: "Being competitive is winning games, and that ain't happening. I don't know how long we're going to say, 'We're in the game.' " -- Jets wide receiver Jermaine Kearse

Biggest draft need: It's a no-brainer -- quarterback. Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg are under contract for 2018, but neither is considered the heir apparent. Josh McCown, 38, is a free agent. The Jets desperately need to add a franchise-caliber quarterback. (People have been saying that for nearly 50 years.) With a top seven pick, they could get a shot at one of the top four -- Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen or Baker Mayfield. Prediction: If Darnold declares, they'll try to trade up for him. The fallback is Allen.

Free-agency targets: If general manager Mike Maccagnan doesn't think he can find his quarterback in the draft, he'll break out the checkbook. The Jets will have about $100 million in cap room, so they can bid with any team. They probably will have some level of interest in Kirk Cousins, but it's hard to imagine that marriage happening. Case Keenum, Teddy Bridgewater and McCown are more realistic options. Other targets: C Ryan Jensen and CB E.J. Gaines.
NFL Nation reporters grade each eliminated team's regular season, assess what position each should target in the 2018 draft and look ahead to the offseason.

Keeping their own: The Jets don’t have any big-ticket free agents, but they have a small group of players worthy of multiyear contracts -- Seferian-Jenkins, LB Demario Davis and K Chandler Catanzaro. CB Morris Claiborne played well when healthy, but his injury history makes him a long-term risk. McCown would be the ideal "bridge" if they draft a quarterback. Seferian-Jenkins had a solid year with 50 catches, but the Jets aren’t going to make a strong push to re-sign him.

Managing the money: They have one of the best cap situations in the league, but will they spend to the max? Maccagnan is a methodical, build-through-the-draft kind of guy. His biggest splurges, bringing back Darrelle Revis (2015) and re-signing Muhammad Wilkerson (2016), were disasters. Wilkerson was so bad he will be released before mid-March, an $11 million cap savings. Some people in the organization are curious to see if Maccagnan is as aggressive as some people want him to be.

Thanks G. I say he should use the Hugh Hefner method in picking FA's...........................Pick them young & hungry for action:global (10):none of these 32 year old CB's or guys on the ol.

Agreed. This team does not need contracts that will hurt them 3 years from now. Good contracts on young FAs who can be a part of the solution long-term. No sense in playing just to compete for a WC in 2018.

2018 jets big year

Our Jets are in a good situation with 100 Mil. cash and have a lot of young talent going into the Draft. Jets have the money to go after any of the Free Agent QB's like Cousins & Draft a QB for the future. We could also go Draft a RB, O Linemen to strengthen our Offense. We are in great shape next year with 2 good WR's & solid TE, add a QB and RB to start and we are able to compete for Playoffs. Its all up to Mikey Mac & Bowles to make this happen and while I'm not happy with Jets resigning Bowles who I wanted in beginning, I'll hope he can show some heart himself and believe in his Players abilities instead of giving up like last 2 games. Wonder where Revis-Richardson-Wilkerson got that idea from playing like they dont believe? Regardless I'm excited about Jets team this coming season. Lets Go Jets!

Pessimistic about QB, even with free agency & draft

The more that I read and hear (from NFL insiders on radio shows), the more pessimistic I am on getting a franchise QB during this off season. My definition of a franchise QB is one with whom you can win a Super Bowl. Another criterion that I use is, "Am I afraid of playing against him in a big game?" I used to hate Marino with a passion. Back in the old days, I hated Johnny Unitas. I remember that fear when he came into the Super Bowl, even though he was actually washed up at that point. Of course, now there is Brady. There are others, but you get the idea.

With regard to free agency, Cousins is obviously the most attractive, but I just don't want to use up so much of our cap space on him. Obviously, he is a good QB, but i just don't see him as being elite. He has not generally excelled in big games. He doesn't scare me. In sum, I just don't think he's worth the huge contract that he'll command.

Alex Smith? Again, he doesn't scare me. It's quite likely that his own team will move on to Patrick Mahomes. I just don't see him as a Super Bowl QB.

The QB that I touted in an earlier thread on this was Teddy Bridgewater. He's young and seemed to be moving towards elite status before his injury. But there's the rub. Yesterday, on the Golic and Wingo show, NFL insider Louis Riddick indicated that the consensus is that Bridgewater's knee could go at any moment. If the Vikings don't re-sign him, that would be telling. My hope still is that the Jets doctors examine him very carefully and feel sure that he has no more chance of a career-ending injury than any other player, but I doubt that he will pass a thorough exam. I'd love for Riddick's info to be wrong, but I doubt it.

As for the draft, it seems that this much-anticipated draft class was overrated, as many members here have already stated. Each QB has a big question mark. Here's another statement made by Riddick yesterday, when responding to a question about some inaccurate passes thrown by Mayfield the other night: "If you think Mayfield can be inaccurate at times, you should watch the Josh Allen tapes!" Wonderful. Sounds like Hackenberg. For you Mayfield supporters, Riddick did say that he felt that Mayfield is generally quite accurate.

I know that there is a long way to go between today and the draft, but I'm starting to think that we should not expect this off season to solve the problem. Based on all of this, I certainly don't think that we should trade up to the number 1 or 2 slot in order to grab one of the QBs. The only exception might be Rosen, but with him the interview process will definitely be the most important part of analyzing him. We know that he can throw the ball.

I'm starting to think that we should use free agency mainly to shore up the OL, get an edge rusher, and a cornerback. Of course we also need to sign a QB, but I just don't see a solution there.

And in the draft, I'm hoping that either one of the top guys falls to us or that we nab someone in the second or third round who turns out to be much better than the first round guys. I just don't think any of the QBs will be Anrdew Luck. Posters have mentioned Mason Rudolph, and the QBs at Auburm and Northwestern. Anyone else? Any small college studs out there?

Sigh. I love Jamal Adams, but why couldn't we have drafted Watson or Mahomes?

first order of business is cut dead weight...

Muhammad Wilkerson is a top of the list, but do they attempt to trade him with the small window of three days from start of league new year to the third day? Would GM Mike Maccagnan get off his high horse and take anything from a team that is willing to give even if it's a 4th round pick, either way we will eat $9 Million in dead loss at least this way we would get a pick for moving him...

There will be no compensatory pick when he is gone, so at least this way we are gifted we a guarantee selection in this year's draft... If possible gathering a young prospect along with that day three pick would be ideal as well but does GM Maccagnan have the balls to pull off a trade otherwise opening the door for Wilk to end up in the division or more important no letting him go to the Patriots...

after Wilkerson who else should be on the chopping block?

Maybe, and only maybe, Matt Forte, He played well for us this year but he has been plagued by injury and actually played while injured some times. He's 32 years old so is he going to be able to overcome this during the off season and come back, stay healthy, and play like a twenty year old which he does when healthy.

It takes two to cut a deal. I don't think that there is a GM out there that is going to give the Jets jack squat for a malcontent, underachieving, injured, DT/DE that is scheduled to make16+ million next year and the following two more years.
Wilkerson is going to hit free agency and he's going to settle on a one year prove it deal before he makes any kind of money again. That's what i see happening, although i would love any kind of draft pick back for him.

I agree but I also think they may consider Buster Skrine as a cap casualty, since he was one of the main reasons we lost a few games this year... There is one other that could be a top of the list, Ben Ijalana a cap casualty... Slim chance James Carpenter who has been an eye sore on the left side...

But there has to be someone in the need of a solid defensive end and don't want to risk having to worry about the vigor of competing with another team especially in their division for his services and may pony up a pick to avoid that miss for a position of need... Remember we will eat $9 million in dead loss from this year but we can spread it over the remainder of the three years... the $11 Million salary is actually a great solid number for his position for one year, because after this year the remaining two years have no guarantees in it and make it optional to either restructure or dump him...

To a team it may be worth to take a shot...

You may be right about all 3 but I think Skrine cutting down on his penalties and improving his play may have bought himself a bye and another year to prove himself.

$6 M cap savings from $8.5 M cap charge on his final year, I dunno what they should do but is he worth those benjamins?

maybe I am biased but if we wanted to upgrade our center position both in FA and the draft I would try to sign Russell Bodine formerly of the Bengals, the North Carolina product is a good all around center and is only 25... Then entering the draft we won't have to use a high pick for one of the two top centers in this year's draft...

before anyone asks since drafted Bodine has played in 64 games in 4 years btw he started all 64... if I would grade him overall he would be an 88 to Wesley Johnson 68... Would be a massive upgrade at a much needed position, just Bodine alone would improve the entire offensive line by 5 times... With a competent center at the helm making the proper line calls a veteran like Carpenter would become serviceable again... Even Beachum at left tackle may improve from the below average play he has given us this past last season...

but again I believe we could in this draft make enough moves to sew up the now and the future on the offensive line between two positions arguably the two positions most important in left tackle and center... but if we can acquire a talented center in free agency then pick up that future at left tackle in the draft would be as good...

one position tight end that could be sewn up by retaining both of our ERFA in Eric Tomlinson and Nate Sterling...

if we could get ASJ on a competitive contract 3 yr $10 M w/incentives would be an ideal turn around in this position...

there is another FA target the team should go after is Arizona's TE Troy Niklas, Niklas an H-Back more serviceable in the run game would be an ideal pairing with ASJ allowing the Jets to utilize more two, three and four tight end sets in various situations to take advantage of some matchups... But having a rotation of two formidable options that are both balanced in blocking as well as receiving would do well for us no matter who is under center... Tomlinson was a surprise to many on how well he was as a receiver knowing that he has been a dominate blocker... Sterling is known to be more of a receiver than a blocker but having four options would do well to stabilize any game plan, John Morton or whomever will be our Offensive Coordinator moving forward..

the real position is QB:

is there any FA targets we should go after if available?
  • Drew Brees is unlikely to leave Nawlins
  • Jimmy Garropollo likely to get extension or franchise tag, so he is not an option
  • AJ McCarrons lost his case to be an UFA, is RFA and chance anyone will offer a package deal of picks to acquire him (except for the Browns)
  • Josh McCown is a likely option to return or retire
  • Could reacquire a former Jet in Kellen Clemens on a one year deal
  • Would laugh if this happened but how bout a return of Mark Sanchez?
  • Vikings have all three options ready to hit free agency, so who do they keep if any (Sam Bradford, Teddy Bridgewater, Case Keenum), with that said two of the three could be viable/serviceable short term options...
  • the fore mentioned Kirk Cousins, but is he worth the price ticket he is seeking?

I assume we will be going with a Draft pick + Eli + Powell as our RB rotation this year. However if not, the only guys on this list who makes any sense are Isiah Crowell or Carlos Hyde.

Hyde is still young, has upside and has been pretty solid this year for SF. Crowell is an ivory type who fits well with the other 2. Lev Bell is too expensive, Damien Williams is too similar to McGuire so that signing would make no sense, and the rest of the guys are subpar at best. Darkwa is a flash in the pan.
