5th Year Team Option
Jet Fanatics
I know everyone is content well mostly with the potential we have at wide receiver but if we delve into FA to improve by adding one would you?

Top 10 FAs at WR:
  1. Sammy Watkins
  2. Allen Robinson
  3. Paul Richardson
  4. Jarvis Landry
  5. Codi Latimer
  6. Marqise Lee
  7. Donte Moncrief
  8. D'Anthony Thomas
  9. Albert Wilson
  10. Jordan Matthews

I would be totally on board with us signing either Robinson or Lee to add to the WR cupboard. No one really knows how enunwa is progressing and his injury was a brutal one. Who knows if he's ready for 2018.

Lee/Robinson would be my preferred options but I would be intrigued by Landry and think he'd fit this system very well. He's got an attitude but what WR doesn't.

5th Year Team Option
Jet Fanatics
the real position is QB:

is there any FA targets we should go after if available?
  • Drew Brees is unlikely to leave Nawlins
  • Jimmy Garropollo likely to get extension or franchise tag, so he is not an option
  • AJ McCarrons lost his case to be an UFA, is RFA and chance anyone will offer a package deal of picks to acquire him (except for the Browns)
  • Josh McCown is a likely option to return or retire
  • Could reacquire a former Jet in Kellen Clemens on a one year deal
  • Would laugh if this happened but how bout a return of Mark Sanchez?
  • Vikings have all three options ready to hit free agency, so who do they keep if any (Sam Bradford, Teddy Bridgewater, Case Keenum), with that said two of the three could be viable/serviceable short term options...
  • the fore mentioned Kirk Cousins, but is he worth the price ticket he is seeking?

The first 3 are not real options, but McCown i would say is a little less than a coin flip to come back. Theres no way we should be guaranteeing him anything and he may want that in order to return. AS a backup that would be perfect but he would have to agree to it so who knows what happens there.

The ex jet qb you mention aren't sniffing this city again, but I am intrigued by Bridgewater and would take a flier on him without any issues. Keenum is pointless and a bandaid at best off a career year (we've heard this story too many times) and Bradford is made of glass.

But there has to be someone in the need of a solid defensive end and don't want to risk having to worry about the vigor of competing with another team especially in their division for his services and may pony up a pick to avoid that miss for a position of need... Remember we will eat $9 million in dead loss from this year but we can spread it over the remainder of the three years... the $11 Million salary is actually a great solid number for his position for one year, because after this year the remaining two years have no guarantees in it and make it optional to either restructure or dump him...

To a team it may be worth to take a shot...

That does change it a bit. 11 million on a one year deal, needs to ball out to ever get another good contract again.

no because the 11 million and the next two non guaranteed the new team can restructure his contract, straight after the trade if he is for it... Depending on the team, he should be to get some guaranteed dollars with the new team even if he loses some of the overall cap he will see $9 Million from us either up front or over stretch period...

$6 M cap savings from $8.5 M cap charge on his final year, I dunno what they should do but is he worth those benjamins?

That's really hard to say. How good is he going to be for us next season ? Do we have someone better for less money to replace him ? I don't know the answer here and fortunately I don't have to make the decision.

our defensive backs coach two of his corners will be free agents this off season and he had tons of success with them: E.J. Gaines and Trumaine Johnson wouldn't be surprised if we went after one or both making Buster Skrine irrelevant... Just saying, there is an abundance of talent that stacks comparison to the lack of play Buster has done this season....

It could very well work out that way. My family refers to him as "The Penalty Machine" so either way they won't care. There's plenty of good talent in the draft too. I just don't know what to expect from the front office concerning his future.

we will see, if they can get another veteran in FA, that is more to the need of the secondary meaning a bump n run man press cover corner would be an upgrade over a nickel zone corner that lacks the awareness and technique to survive in this type of press cover defense...

if we can get Trumaine Johnson he would be the lead guy... EJ Gaines more of a support guy than a leader in the locker room but he also has the talent to be a 1b guy on the depth chart...

We could certainly use an upgrade at the corners and I'd like to see them draft a good edge rusher like Keys.

wish we could draft both Roquan Smith and Lorenzo Carter from UGA but that is highly unlikely... Roquan with Darron Lee on the inside then Jordan Jenkins along with ER Lorenzo Carter could be a fearsome foursome for years...

as for corner, we need to upgrade what we had this year and I mean firesale at this position, none of them except for the three rookies deserve to be here... Claiborne lived up to his status as an incapable 16 game starter, Skrine not a man press cover corner not because of his height because of his skill set... Tavon Young for Baltimore same height but plays like he is 6'4" just because his skill set is built for press coverage (man to man)...

like Skrine, Roberts hasn't learned or developed his technique by now for this level then he needs to go elsewhere...

Burris is built to be our nickel, a run support type corner has the size and enough length to defend against running backs and tight ends, even some bigger receivers... just because this regime drafted him he deserves another shot or two to find his role on this team...

This has got to be the year the Jets land their franchise QB...HAS TO BE.

If Macagnan understood the ramifications of thew 2016 draft on how he whiffed on pulling a block buster trade in order to acquire either Jared Goff or Carson Wentz, he will no doubt do what he must in order to etch his name in the Jets annals and get his QB. If its Baker Mayfield then the Jets NEED to do it. If its Darnold, LET THEM DO IT, If it Rosen, LET THEM DO IT.

The 6th overall pick MUST be owned by someone other than the Jets. Mac needs the green and white to crack the top three to get the QB we've been lacking for over 40 years. No more "Build through the draft". We've done that already. The core is young and needs a leader at the helm for the next 10-15 years. Enough with this mediocre QB play of Fitzpatrick-Geno-McCown and Petty ..The time is now. Ample salary cap space. The locker room is united-PERFECT ATMOSPHERE to groom a young QB.

[h=2]Times Have Changed Along the Defensive Line[/h]
E_MK2_5244-dl-top.jpg

Last Season in Review
Nine days before the start of the 2017 regular season, GM Mike Maccagnan sent defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson to Seattle in exchange for wide receiver Jermaine Kearse and a second-round selection in the 2018 Draft while clubs agreed to swap seventh-round picks. Richardson’s departure came a little bit more than a year after nose tackle Damon “Snacks” Harrison signed a lucrative free-agent deal with the crosstown Giants. With those two out of the picture in addition to DL Muhammad Wilkerson battling injuries and then being a healthy scratch the final three games in 2017, the Jets’ defensive line looked vastly different last season.

“It’s interesting how fast things change,” said defensive lineman Leonard Williams.

Just 23, Williams continued his solid plan in his third professional campaign. Despite seeing a lot more attention, Williams paced the defensive linemen with 67 tackles Although he finished with just two sacks, he was frequently around the quarterback and finished with a team-high 28 quarterback hits.

“Like Coach Bowles says, we don’t like to make excuses even though I was getting double-teamed and triple-teamed at times,” Williams said. “It’s a good thing as well, I’m probably freeing up other teammates if I’m getting double-teamed and triple-teamed. At the same time, I’m going work more this offseason on defeating the double-team.”

Veteran Steve McLendon was a fixture in the middle, providing a steady presence against the run while contributing 55 tackles and six tackles for loss. Long-limbed DE Kony Ealy, acquired off waivers from the Patriots in August, amassed nine pass defenses and added one of the three interceptions from the D-line. In his first season with the Green & White, 6’4”, 332-pound Mike Pennel appeared in 16 games and became a starter later in the year with Wilkerson on the sideline. Xavier Cooper, a third-round pick of the Browns in 2015, suited up in eight contests and chipped in with 16 stops and a sack.

“We had more continuity on the defensive line schematically,” Bowles said at his season-ending news conference. “I think that was better from that standpoint.”

Looking Ahead
While Ealy, Pennel and DT Ed Stinson all have expiring contracts, the Jets have to make a decision regarding Wilkerson’s future. In 13 games last season, he racked up 3.5 sacks and 59 tackles. It’s been a difficult go for Wilkerson the past two seasons as he was slowed in 2016 following offseason surgery and then foot/toe and shoulder ailments limited him early this past fall. He had a midseason surge but then finished the year as a spectator.

After collecting 12 sacks and helping the Jets yield a franchise-low 83.4 yards per game on the ground in 2015, Wilkerson signed an extension with the club in 2016.

“When you sign a large contract, you are obviously expecting a player to perform at a high level," said general manager Mike Maccagnan. "Now for whatever reason, players may not perform at that level. I’m not going to sit here and weigh in on one particular player. This will play itself out here over time. But again, you have to make business decisions. Business decisions in terms of an evaluation of really the allocation of your resources. The way the contract was situated for example with Mo, we kind of had a two-year window and an ability to make an evaluation after those two years.”

Bowles, who said it was a coach’s decision to keep Wilkerson inactive Weeks 15-17, has continued to keep things close to the vest.

“We’ll meet upstairs and see what the best options are available going forward and go from there,” he said. “I don’t know if he’s going to be released or not released, but we haven’t had those discussions yet. There’s a lot that can happen in the spring.”

First thing they need to do when they meet upstairs is agree to spend the money, but intelligently, to get the pieces we need. Second thing is eliminate any player that demonstrated lack of skill or application. Thirdly have the guts and good sense to go out and do it intelligently without succumbing to any hype.

[h=1]FanRag -- The ultimate New York Jets offseason plan[/h] While free agency is still nearly two months away, the New York Jets have plenty of work ahead of them to form the ultimate offseason plan. With a ton of cap space, extra draft capital and many needs to fill, general manager Mike Maccagnan and company will look to complete their most impactful roster transition yet.

Let’s break down the Jets offseason free-agent and draft targets that could turn the tank thoughts to playoffs for the 2018 season.

Free Agency

Projected cap space: $75-100 million

Happy Trails!…

Last year was a mass exodus in terms of once-franchise cornerstones let go. Both starting receivers, Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall, just a year after finishing as a top duo in the league, were shown the door. David Harris and Nick Mangold, two building blocks for a decade, were released as well.

It won’t be that significant this year, but there’s still salary cap “fat” to trim. The notable one will be Muhammad Wilkerson, who is just two years removed from signing a five-year, $86 million contract with significant guarantees. There are two options on how to move on from the checked-out defensive lineman.

Cutting him will save the team $11 million in cap space, with $9 million in dead money. The other option is to designate him as a post-June 1 cut, which would free up $17 million in cap space for this offseason but spread out $3 million in dead money in each year from 2018-2020.

Matt Forte, who gutted out the year with an injured knee, will most likely be cut for a savings of $3 million, with $1 million on the books in dead money. While Buster Skrine has had his ups and downs, the Jets are too thin at cornerback to let him go. Expect talks to find a middle ground on a restructure that keeps him in New York.

Outside of money-saving reasons, there are two more cuts to be made: quarterbacks Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty. The experiment is over; each offers little benefit to remain on the roster. The Jets should come out of both free agency and the draft with a quarterback. Don’t take reps away from either but keeping Hackenberg and Petty, who simply have not proven to be NFL caliber passers during their tenure with the franchise.

Wait, stay a little longer!

On the flip side, the Jets have to convince a few of their pending free agents to stay. That doesn’t always come easy, or cheap. Here are some projected contracts for their key free agents:
  • Demario Davis – three years, $24 million with $14 million guaranteed
  • Austin Seferian-Jenkins – three years, $16.5 million with $10 million guaranteed
  • Morris Claiborne – two years, $15 million with $8 million guaranteed
Keeping Demario Davis will not be an easy task. In a year where he got an All-Pro vote and just turned 29 years old this month, he’ll be looking for every last dollar he can get in his prime. The market for off-ball linebackers is not expensive, but expect him to be paid in the top 10 of this group, whether it be from the Jets or an external offer.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins has rebuilt his career, but there is no reason to pony up significant cash to keep a short area receiving threat who is a solid blocker. Both sides should meet middle ground here, as ASJ has rebuilt his once lost career in Florham Park.

As for Morris Claiborne, that projected contract would’ve been twice the size if the season ended after Week 6. Unfortunately, he proved yet again that full season health concerns are real. With that being said, the Jets need corners and he played well under Todd Bowles when up to strength.

Time to spend some cash

Priority #1: Kirk Cousins, QB, Washington Redskins

This one is as simple as it gets ,and I’ve outlined in-depth why the Jets need to be all-in on signing Cousins as their franchise quarterback. He’s in the top 10-12 quarterbacks in all of football, hasn’t turned 30 yet and fits the culture in Florham Park perfectly. On top of all of that, rumors have begun to leak that they are indeed interested.

It’s rare for a signal caller as talented as him to hit free agency, but sometimes a little luck can go a long way (just ask the Saints re: Drew Brees). Signing Cousins completely opens up the Jets draft, where they can add serious talent with their first three picks, which fall in the top 50.

Projected contract: five years, $150 million with $100 million guaranteed

Priority #2: Find a center

The Jets desperately need an upgrade at center. Waiting until the draft presents an extremely risky situation, and with a solid free agent class, there’s no need to hold off until then.

If they do indeed land Cousins, pending free agent Spencer Long would make a lot of sense. If you’re going to invest big money in a quarterback, why not bring some familiarity over with him?

Two other intriguing options are the Giants’ Weston Richburg or the Ravens’ Ryan Jensen. Richburg wouldn’t have to move very far, if at all, making him a potential candidate. As for Jensen, this would arguably be the best addition of the three. He’s extremely talented and hasn’t even turned 27, making him a potential cornerstone in the trenches for the next 4-5 years.

Priority #3: Value additions

There are two potential value additions that I really like in this year’s free agent class: Patriots running back Dion Lewis and Eagles tight end Trey Burton. When each have gotten playing time, they’ve excelled and exceeded expectations.

At 27, Lewis should be looking to get paid. It would be a surprise to see New England invest money at the running back position, although he’s been a key piece of their offense.

Burton has been the third-string tight end in Philadelphia and may be looking for a destination where he can slide into a featured role. This is yet another addition that makes sense if Cousins is added, as he could be used similarly to Jordan Reed.

What about pass rusher?

The Jets, for about the last decade, have lacked a legitimate edge pass rushing threat. This is not an easy problem to fix and the draft is often the best route to find aid.

This year’s free-agent class offers two top players in the Cowboys’ Demarcus Lawrence or the Lions’ Ezekiel Ansah, but each carry significant risks.

Lawrence, 25, who should absolutely be franchise-tagged by Dallas after a 14.5 sack campaign, has a suspension in his past for a PED violation. His production in 2014 and 2016 was non-existent, while his production in 2015 and 2017 was very impressive. Either way, it would be a surprise to see him hit the market.

As for Ansah, he will turn 29 this offseason. His production has been all over the place in his five-yearcareer, but he finished 2017 with 12 sacks. Six of those came in the final two games of the season. He was battling a back injury much of the season, which could hurt his market, assuming he does not get franchise-tagged.

If the Jets opt to add an edge threat in free agency, they should look for a value play. While it would be a surprise, Dave Gettleman clearing out bloated contracts brings a small chance Olivier Vernon finds himself back on the market. Would the Jets make another attempt to bring him in?

Shaquil Barrett from the Broncos will be a restricted free agent. At just 25, he’s flashed a ton of potential when put on the field. If the Broncos run tight on cap space, putting in an offer for him could pay big time dividends down the road.

NFL Draft

Current picks: Round 1: sixth overall, Round 2: 37th overall, Round 2: 49th overall, Round 3: 72nd overall, Round 4: 109th overall, Round 5: 159th overall, Round 6: 183rd overall, Round 7: 236th overall

If you’re late to the party, here’s my pre-free agency mock draft through all seven rounds for the Jets.

Landing Bradley Chubb, the best overall pass rusher in this class, instantly elevates the Jets defense through each phase of the game. He has an alpha male mindset with a relentless style of play up front. The two scenarios that disrupt this pick are as follows:
  • He’s selected before the Jets pick (Hello, Indianapolis Colts)
  • The Jets whiff on Cousins and need a quarterback
Scenario 1 is not the end of the world. There will still be a very good player available, such as running back Saquon Barkley or linebacker Roquan Smith. Maccagnan has had success with his best-player-available approach in the past, and assuming they can’t find a trade-out partner, it shouldn’t fail him here.

Scenario 2 is extremely concerning and puts the Jets in desperation mode. Ideally Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield falls to six and they select him. Maccagnan has clearly fallen for the “traditional” pocket passer in the past, selecting players such as Petty and Hackenberg outside of Round 1, but passing on prospects such as Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes early on. This strategy has failed the franchise and a new vision is needed. Will they make the bold change in strategy?

If there are concerns about the teams picking in front of them, find a way to move up for Mayfield, Josh Rosen or Sam Darnold. This team has to come away with a signal caller of the future this offseason.

As for the rest of the mock draft, the two areas of significant need that I see are cornerback and running back. Fortunately for the Jets, both of those positions carry impressive depth in this year’s class.

The midround running back names to circle are USC’s Ronald Jones, San Diego State’s Rashaad Penny, Georgia’s duo of Sony Michel and Nick Chubb, and Auburn’s Kerryon Johnson.

The midround cornerback names to circle are Colorado’s Isaiah Oliver, Auburn’s Carlton Davis, Louisville’s Jaire Alexander, North Carolina’s M.J. Stewart, Alabama’s Anthony Averett, UCF’s Mike Hughes and San Diego State’s Kameron Kelly.

Final outlook

The Jets don’t have to hit on all of these potential additions, but filling a majority of these needs with the candidates mentioned above would be the quickest path to turning around the franchise.

They have the cap flexibility to solve their most dire holes before even entering the draft. A few of their key needs, such as running back, cornerback and center, offer a wide array of options in this year’s class.

The front office and coaching staff have been given patience from ownership, a not-so-common scenario seen in Florham Park. It’s time to make it pay off with what should be one of the biggest offseasons they’ve had in this past decade.

Should the Jets Trade Bilal Powell, this upcoming off season?

Understand Bilal Powell is our best running back, but he isn't getting any younger and should be considered as a trade piece this upcoming off season... A complete back that is hard to come by for a team on the cusp of taking that next step of being a playoff team could be interested... The cost would be a high third or low second depending on the team interested... A team like the Detroit Lions who have failed to fill this position of the years, has to be one team that could be interested... Their third round pick would suffice the value to acquire BP from the Jets, he would arguably be their starting running back that would balance out the aerial attack with his pass blocking... BP has shown as he gotten older he has gotten quicker, that could intrigue a team seeking help at that position...

With any additional picks for this draft would help us sew up many issues of potential not only on the offense but defensive side of the ball...

So would you, or should the Jets consider it? This move has no bearings on release of Matt Forte which should be one of the major roster moves...

I don't think I'd trade him yet. Basically he's the backbone of our running game. Forte is near the end of his dependability curve because of his struggle with injury and his age. McGuire has shown promise and they have Judd. I think trading Forte, even though he wouldn't be as attractive to other teams and therefore not profit us as much, would make more sense.

Forte should be gone, via release or a possible trade he is done...
As for the other RBs on the roster both Judd and J. Thomas could be optional role players behind McGuire who could be the lead back if the team decides to trade BP...

This also would open the door for the Jets to draft a RB, maybe a Sony Michel from UGA?

Michel could be the primary, with McGuire as the relief and 3rd down back... Then having either Judd or Jahad Thomas as the 3rd back in the rotation could be a decent backfield next year...
