The media consensus seems to be that the Jets and Broncos will be the two biggest players for Cousins. I personally think he winds up in Denver, all things being equal. If we can get him, great. If he lands in Denver, then one of the top QBs will fall to us. Then it's a question of whether Mac wants one of the Qbs or has another player ranked higher. It's going to be an interesting offseason.

Jets have a lot more money than Denver so if money talks, Jets win.

Your thinking is that if Denver signs Cousins, they wont draft a QB. They also may trade down to a team that needs a QB.

You're right AFA2017, they could do that. I don't think any of us can predict trades at this point. But to your point, sure that could happen. The Jets could swap picks with the Broncos just be sure they get the guy they want too. I think the Browns take Darnold. I can see the Giants taking Barkley, Allen or Rosen. My guess is that they take Barkley - then they have Barkley, Beckham Jr. and Evans on offense. They need o-line help but can get that later. If that happens, then the Jets could have Allen, Rosen, and Mayfield as options. The Giants in my opinion are the key slot as far as the Jets are concerned. Who they take will dictate who is still available when the Jets pick.

That's smart thinking. If you bet on both teams your team is certain to win or certain to lose. Which is it ? I don't know. :global (11):

Yep, kinda like I see it too. Tagging him would only be spiteful as I said and ridiculously expensive for them. Some people believe that Washington doesn't want him but it's actually the other way around. The odds makers say that the Jets are his most likely landing spot but the Vikings already have a winning team and that is something that appeals to him as well.

The Vikings will most likely tag Keenum. He took them to the verge of the Super Bowl. It would be cheaper for them and he is familiar with the system, has good chemistry with the receivers. Can't imagine them messing with that.
Washington definitely wanted him. I'm sure it became clear he would not sign long term again. They have been trying to get a deal done for 3 years and they can't afford to Tag him again, now with the Smith deal, they have an extra 7 million in cap space and they will need every penny of it.
I honestly think it's going to come down to the Jets and Browns. Denver and Arizona don't seem to have the cap space and to open it up, they would lose key players. It's going to be a very interesting FA period. So many things can happen. I'm still in the building through the draft camp, but the chance at a quality QB in FA is so rare that this is the time for an exception. There will be at least 3 very good QBs available. I'm looking forward to it and it's ending so we can get a real Idea what our draft needs will be.

Me too. I'm leaning both ways on Cousins. Having him as our starter does take the pressure off us to draft a top rated QB this time. He's a very capable player to mentor any bench warmer we sign and his skill set would go a long way in giving our young players development help. My concern though is how much we will have to over pay for him and the fact that winning the important game is a struggle for him. Maybe in our system, which is the system he does best in, coupled with our hungry, hard working, young players that will change and he will reach that next level.

I think 27.5-28 million will be his salary. That would be just above Stafford's . It's alot but will seem like a bargain in 2 years time .

I agree with your assessment. In 3 - 4 years 27 - 28 mil will be a bargain. Hopefully.

That would be true if he plays well for sure. I know that the Broncos are real interested but don't have near the cap space that we do even though more space could be created by doing some player shuffling. It comes down to him deciding which is more important to him, money or team strength. If it's money, the Jets can and probably will offer more. How much more remains to be seen.

It's also about winning now with a closing window vs the future with a building team. Pros and cons to both.
Denver will have to move some key pieces to sign him, That could shorten that window too.
It will be an interesting decision to watch.
I'd bet he wants both.....

If not the roster should have most if not all holes filled and we could part ways and have a legit team for a young QB to take the reins.
I doubt we take a QB this year in the draft if Cousins is signed but I would expect it next year or 2020 depending on how he plays.

I've thought about this more. I don't believe Cousins is a top tier QB worth the money he will get, but I think the Jets should try to sign him and then build the OL and get a pass rusher. Cousins could give the Jets a chance to make playoffs next year. I may not live past tomorrow so I don't have time for a rookie to develop and I don't want to root for the OU child. They just need to make sure they structure the contract so they don't mortgage their future.

If Cousins comes here, he's immediately one of the top 6 or 7 QBs in the AFC. And with Brady's, Big Ben's and Rivers' careers all winding down, he would be among the top 3 or 4 when they retire. I would put him behind Brady, Big Ben, Rivers, Luck, Watson and Carr. It's too early to tell on Mahomes, but he has a chance to be a good one too. In the NFC, which is loaded with good QBs by comparison, he was still amongst the league leaders in many categories. He's a definitely a good player and the Jets can win with him if he has the other pieces in place - a good offensive line, solid running game, and a very good defense. The Jets are building a good defense, they just need a couple of pieces there. Online and running game need some work, which they can address in the draft and free agency.

I still think he winds up in Denver just because of Elway's pull. But, if he comes here we're immediately a better team. And if McCown stays on as a backup, that's a pretty solid QB room.

The rumors are that he has told people already that the Vikings are his number one choice if they can meet his asking price so it is really up in the air too much for me to get excited one way or the other at this point.

I was checking the players who might be drafted at #6. Besides QB's and Barkley who I believe will be taken in the top 3 picks, the BPA are Defensive players. I would love OG Nelson. I just don't see Mac taking him.

You all know that back in 2015 they tried to trade washington for cousins when RG3 was still starter and right before we settled for fitzpatrick and washington refused to trade him. Mac was very interested then......I would be very suprised if they dont make a big run at the guy now. Besides, its a known quantity - a safe move. The currently leadership knows they cant draft quarterbacks and are terrible at developing quarterbacks.

When your all time passing leader is Joe Namath - in a time when QB's werent supposed to be passing legends - and Ryan Fitzpatrick is your TD leader - you are a sad sad desperate organization. Cousins is mediocre in several categories and above average in many others. None of it really matters. Simple fact is he would be best QB Jets ever had - just because none of the ones we ever had really rated. Closest was Chad - but he couldnt stay healthy. If they think they can get Cousins, they will. Even if they were capable of developing and drafting a guy - the risk factor is so great you get a lemon. And if they do that is a third lemon in a row for the current staff.

Its even the reason we are seeing all the Bates stuff now. Makes you think they are probably not officially announcing his appointment until Free Agency to attempt to further entice cousins.
