What will Cousins fetch on the open market

wouldn't it be lose for Fitz thread? Fitzgerald that is...
or how bout lose for the Ham, Stidham

I am just not sold when a team that is entering second year of a rebuild needs to pay a average QB all that money to do what, continue to be average with a team that may be competitive but now has a $30 M annual QB doing what the $6 M one year deal did that last year...
If you mentioned Stidham to get my attention you succeeded. Also I agree that paying superstar wages to an average QB is frivolous. We can afford it right now even though it wouldn't be my choice. I think though that the front office might think it worth the money because in their minds it solves their QB quandary for a few years because they think playing in our system with Bates as OC he might take the next step. For my money I'd bring in a affordable QB such as Bridgewater or even, don't hate me guys, bring back McCown who says he still wants to play. I'd use that first pick to get a play maker and settle for the best available QB in the second or third round to groom in place of Hack.

34 million a season is 7 million more than the biggest contract in league history. I'd be shocked to see him getting that much.

Well, I bet you were shocked to see Washington trade for Smith while releasing Cousins. Its going to be a bidding war, so 34 million is not out of the question

I still think the Broncos go after him hard.
And I think Cousins would prefer to sign with Denver. He has stated money is not the big issue being he was franchised the last two years (50M) so his main goal is winning. Cleveland is your last thought when you think of winning. Think about it. Denver has very stout defense, good offensive receivers in Sanders and Thomas, good enough backfield and when they promise to draft Nelson (my conjecture) it will upgrade them to having a very good offensive line. Good winning culture in Denver (instead of Cleveland who's won one game in two years). Denver is also only two years removed from the Superbowl.

I'd love this move. We havent had a solid QB here since Chad. If we land him, Mac needs to trade up and get a play maker like Barkley. This would make this O legit for years.

Barkley would be a waste behind this OL. Build that first and then any RB will be successful.

I really wasn't shocked by the trade. The Chiefs made it clear that they were going to release Smith if they couldn't get a trade done early in the season. I was shocked Washington sent Fuller in the trade though. Washington could not get Cousins to agree to a long term deal and they would have had to pay him way too much on a third tag. Over $34 million.
I'd be very happy to land cousins but not at $34 million.

This.
And I don't want Cousins. I'd rather sign another experienced QB short term while the Jets develop their own draftee. Then, build the team, especially the O line, around him.

I am for building a strong OL.That has always been my goal for the Jets but if Barkley fell to us at #6, I can't see passing on him if the 4 QB's are gone. Walter Payton was picked by the Bears and at the time there OL was not that good. Barkley would be an ideal weapon to have. We have cash to spend in FA (with Wilkerson being cut). If we spend it wisely we can add a couple of good pieces to the OL (Center and Guard). I don't see a good signing at OT.

I do. Look at Orlando Brown from Oklahoma. He's rated higher than Barkley or Fitzpatrick in the draft and #1 at that position.

Don't forget the Cardinals that are ready to win now.....In fact as I see it there is a 30% chance he will end up on one of my teams...good or bad

So here's the way I see it. He can go to the Cardinals, Jets ,Broncos or Browns. If I'm thinking like he should be, I throw out the Browns and the Jets , well, because they are the Browns and Jets. Next I throw out the Broncos. Why, because they play in the AFC, where the best any team can do while belichick lives is come in second place. I then sign a reasonable contract with the Cardinals knowing that if I'm lucky I will be able to lose the superbowl to the cheatahs some day.

Who knows what these guys think. If I could sign a deal for 100 million could I really even consider that that's not enough and hold out for 150 million? The whole idea of making that kind of money is inconceivable to me. Personally I'd take less money to go to a team that has a chance to win but I would make ownership sign a deal that says that the extra money I'm saving them has to be spent on a cheetah quality offensive line to protect me and a gronkowski clone.

All that said, many people are selfish and greedy. I don't know anything about this kid, but if he's like most others he will be looking for as much as he can get. Is he smart enough to take less and go to denver instead of our Jets? I guess we'll see.

If he's really smart he can take Garapollos old job and sit on the bench while still making millions and filling both hands with rings. And even if he got traded from the cheatahs before the end of the season, he still gets a ring and more money then brady for the superbowl. HAHA. Did you here that one? Garapollo will be making more money in the superbowl for his time spent on the cheatahs, then brady because of some silly tax deal.

to answer the question, I'll throw out 30 million a year for 5 years as my guess if he doesn't go to the Broncos or Cards for less

with the Redskins getting Alex Smith for a 3rd round plus K. Fuller opens the door for us to make that same kind of approach maybe for AJ McCarron, we have one player that the Bungals may be willing to take off our hands plus a 4th round pick...

I am not willing to see this team mortgage any future by giving a QB that has accomplished nothing but mediocre over the span of the last few years...

There is not one QB in this year's draft that will make a difference (especially any of the top 4)... All 4 have more questions than answers for our struggling franchise... Maybe one has long term potential but it is not guaranteed even with a QB's coach like Bates that is suppose to be promoted to offensive coordinator, it is like the team is holding out just in case someone more experience becomes available...
  • Sam Darnold is two to three years riding the pine before he should see the field but has the most upside... We already have one entering year three waiting for his turn, to add another oh boy...
  • Josh Rosen isn't fully committed to football, especially if he feels the team that drafts him isn't going anywhere...
  • Josh Allen is inconsistent but is a cold weather QB that could thrive in the north east region... Can we afford to take that chance (50/50) flourish or Hackit again...
  • Baker Mayfield has the talent, but is an immature prick... In the New York market, is one strike away from bringing the circus back to town...
Maybe we hold out and take the likes of a Mason Rudolph, Mike White, or Riley Ferguson... Maybe we take a chance on a Lamar Jackson, at worst he can become Brad Smith 2.0...

SO many possibilities but this year isn't the time to worry about making that homerun splash as the team will still be 5 pieces(OL) away from competing at a high level...

Right. I'd spend the bank on oline so any mediocre qb can succeed behind it rather then get a mediocre qb and put him behind a mediocre at best oline and watch him fail

If they tag Cousins, then I want no part of him for any type of pick.

I don't think any GM would.
cousins would also have to agree to the trade, he won't due to it costing his new team potential draft picks, unless he plans to hit Free Agency again next season. Remember, this is his 3 rd tag so his next team if traded , can't tag him to keep him.

Am I the ONLY one who thinks QB$ has gotten out of control? I wouldnt be comfortable paying him more than 20 a year period. When did he reach "Elite" status? I think an average QB @ 15 Mil till you see if he produces in our system is MORE than fair. If after a year he shows he can...then open the bank. I understand none of my thoughts will impact what the Jets do...but I am TIRED of paying jaguar money for YARIS!

$12-15 million is now back up money.
Carr, Stafford are certainly not the names who come to mind when thinking about elite but their deals have set the market. It's a QB driven league and as long as the salary cap continues to rise every year, so will salaries. Come the new CBA in 2021, they could rise even higher.
Sports are an entertainment venue , as long as the public buys tickets, or watches the games, salaries will remain what they are.
When a top actor gets paid, do we complain.
Here are the top paid actors from 2015:
Robert Downey Jr.: $80 million.
Jackie Chan: $50 million.
Vin Diesel: $47 million.
???????Bradley Cooper: $41.5 million.
???????Adam Sandler: $41 million.
???????Tom Cruise: $40 million.
Amitabh Bachchan: $33.5 million.
Salman Khan: $33.5 million.
Mot one of them will have CTE or crippling pain for the rest of their lives .
??????? They are paid to entertain us and as long as the industry remains profitable, they will all continue to make unbelievable amounts of money....

There's no salary cap on Hollywood...

Honestly, I don't care how much anyone gets paid. I care what percentage of the cap they take.

Garoppolo is reportedly a little more than 20% of the 9ers cap next year. Now its heavily front-loaded, because that's the situation they're in, nobody can sustain tgat and build a team. 15% is what his deal averages (against projected 2018 cap) and that's a highwater mark to me. In my eyes, to eat up 15% or more of your teams cap, you've got to be the reason they're winning games. It's not too hard to argue that in 2017, he was. We'll see going forward - that puts you squarely in Top Ten category I think.

If you're a role player/game manager, a 'with a running game and a great D we can win with this guy' I think you can't eat that much cap. I think Cousins is somewhere in between a Top Ten guy and a role player - closer to a Top Ten, but I don't think he'll ever get there. If a team pays cousin's close to 20% of their cap, I think they're in trouble.
