New York Jets Select Sam Darnold, USC

Jets faithful, I will admit I am alittle concerned here. Don’t get me wrong, I am estatic about this pick. I absolutely love it but I truly wanted Rosen. On my QBs scale, I had Rosen slightly ranked over Darnold. Rosen (10) and Darnold (9.75), I had Mayfield (9) and Allen (7.5). So as you can see it’s by a slight margin. I will admit also that I didn’t do much research on Darnold because I never thought the Jets had any chance of getting him. I just know Cleveland wasn’t going to screw this up and they would draft Darnold. Even when the Allen rumors were swerving I didn’t believe it and I definitely didn’t believe the Mayfield the the Browns rumors.

I just knew Darnold would be gone by our pick in some way. So all my research was on Rosen mainly on Mayfield second. So I fell in love with Rosen and was just hoping we got him. I was scared shitless the Jets would be dumb enough to either pass on Rosen for Mayfield or have no choice but to draft Mayfield because Darnold and Rosen would be gone. So here I am estatic about this pick and I wholeheartedly believe we have our guy. However; I was comparing Rosen to Aaron Rodgers and I believe Rodgers is the most talented QB to ever touch a football. So I obviously think we have the second best QB in the draft and passed on the best one. Please convince me that I’m wrong!!!

Don't get me wrong , I like Rosen also, but Darnold is probably just as accurate a passer as Rosen , but he is extremely accurate on the run , and has that added dimension of being able to pick up yardage with his mobility, which we all saw last season , many times , when McCown tucked the ball away and ran for first downs. You can't teach that , and Rosen does not possess that ability. Darold reminds me of a bigger , taller Russell Wilson except an even better passer.

Grades at this stage mean nothing. Let’s wait until they actually get a chance to play before we grade.

The Browns are getting hammered for Mayfield and Ward. They could have had Darnold and Chubb. I don’t know what they’re thinking.

But we will see.

I realize grades mean nothing however I just wanted to see if when the Jets get a break and do the right thing as well as the consensus thing in the draft will they be credited for it. They should be A's across the board..

Rosen is the better passer, but Darnold is the better leader. I prefer the better leader. I just couldn't see Rosen's teammates running through a wall for him. From what I have read, Darnold was looked up to by everyone on the team, even though Darnold is only 20. I also prefer that Darnold can create outside the pocket. We now have the perfect QB situation. I never thought I'd type that. McCown will be the perfect mentor.

Is it possible that the football gods have finally smiled on the Jets? This is the 3rd year in a row that a stud has fallen to us. Thank you Dorsey and Gettleman. I can't believe that the Giants took the running back. He is a stud, but there is no comparison in the importance of the positions. Dorsey messed up the 4th pick as well.

Look I hate the Giants but they have a chance to win a SB now with Manning. That great donkey of a WR & Barkley A couple of picks on the ol & they have maybe a three years good window to win the SB.

For those that say but how about the next 15?????? Look at a perfect world ...in that world you would win a Sb every 32 years.....one that is.........So the Giants have the best chance to win that in the next 3 years because of Barkley....................A SB qb, all world Wr & a good chance of an all world RB. Beef up that OL & a couple on D & they are good to go right now..

Plus the next 15 years after Manning......... Winning teams win & losing teams lose.......winning teams find ways to bring in QB.s

I think the Giants made the right pick for them this year & next.

that's crazy. how do you get a C landing the best QB according to most experts with the 3rd pick of the draft?

I think someone else mentioned it, but Charlie Casserly just said a poll of 24 teams were asked who their top QB’s were. Darnold got 17 votes, Mayfield got 3.

Was listening to Charlie Weis on NFL-Sirius this am talking about the QB picks. What he had to say about Rosen floored me. He said all you need to know about the kid and the reason he doesn't like him is what came out of his mouth in post pick interview. Something along the line of 'teams made 9 mistakes before the Cards selected me.' Weis said the kid is a jerk, and that comment only proved it in his mind. He understands Rosen was disappointed, but that he needed to just learn when to 'shut the hell up'.
BTW - Weis loved Darnold to the Jets. (for what its worth)

the beauty in this pick is since high school Darnold has been described as a QB that makes things happen. His high school sometimes did not know what he was doing when a play broke down but the results would be positive. The kid has the 'it' factor - that's not something a stopwatch or weights on the bar can measure. In the end we have a playmaker. Haven't seen that in a long time.

Rosen has been my 2nd choice and he brings a surgeon's aspect to the field. He will carve many a secondary up on Sundays, but he doesn't have that 6th sense in the pocket and will be vulnerable to hits and injury. IF he gets the right OL, he could be productive for a long time. He is the only QB in this draft that is ready to play on Sundays.

Be honest now......how many of you soon after realizing the Giants took Barkley had that god awful feeling the Jets were gonna still pick someone else? I went from jumping out of my chair to my stomach churning as they let that damn clock play out. I definitely had my SOJ moment of doubt, but thankfully our GM knows what he is doing.

honestly i had no problem with those comment. nothing wrong with a kid having a chip on his shoulder over a perception he fell in the draft. supposedly he's close to aaron rodgers who also has harbored a grudge over being passed over so many times.

a criticism on rosen is he didn't love the game. to me, this shows that he indeed does love the game. if he was so nonchalant about football, he wouldn't care that he fell a little. he's still set up to make a boatload of money as it's not like he fell to late in the 1st round

Anyone familiar with me knows I’m not a SOJ fan.

But to be honest, when we were on the clock, I had a sick feeling in my stomach that Macc was going to bypass Darnold and Rosen for Allen.

I said out loud “Don’t F this up Macc. It’s really easy”.

Big relief. Big exhale when I heard “Sam”

I have no problem with Rosen’s comments either.

Many of us including me would have loved either Rosen or Mayfield as they're young QBs who wear their emotions on their sleeves. They're the epitomy of the "ra-ra" leader many of us like to see. Hell, even the media would have smelled blood in the water to pounce on both of these young kids.

Enter Sam Darnold, the guy seems very quiet and robotic if you ask me. Though in the grand scheme of things, especially that young is probably the best way to be to survive in this new york market. Guys like Eli Manning, Derek Jeter, Brian Leetch excelled in not giving into the bait of the beat writers and just have a stoic way of life .

Also, for those on the cliff about to jump due to Darnolds junio season collegiate turnovers; here are Matt Ryans numbers at BC

So yea, with the right work ethic, the right coaching and the right drive to get the most out of ones potential, its correctable.

A couple of things here folks

1) Rosen said he loves football the last few years & at one time he was not sure about his love for the sport.

2) The Cards know what they got & they like it...in fact they look forward to him being that way....will they feel the same in year three.......Time will tell

Ok one more I love them both.....Go jet Go cards

You and 98% of Jets fans were thinking the exact same thing. I collapsed at the bar when Goodel said Sam.

He did pretty good for a 20 year old on his pro day in the rain at 53 degress.

He did great on his pro day in the rain and cold. I watched and he had no difficulty at all throwing in the rain and it poured that day. And for those who heard that his play fell off a little in his last season you should be made aware of something that college football fans already knew. His "O" line that season had a few newbies on it which could have been responsible for the slack as much as anything else. I'm OK with the pick as long as he doesn't turn into a Sanchez at midnight.

Not sure yet until I see him play in cold weather. I had read he has never played in a game with the temperature below 54 degrees!!!
And I want to see how well he can not just throw, but hold onto the ball, in cold weather.
Is the (butt) fumble part of the USC playbook? We'll find out.

So for now, I'm not overwhelmed and i'm not underwhelmed.
Put me down as whelmed.

Dont understand why Rosen is pissed. The guy is a top ten pick. Get over yourself Josh. I'am actually even that much more glad we got Darnold instead of Rosen.

His build reminds me so much of Jim Kelly. The dude can truck people if he scrambles.
