Went to Today's Practice: My Observations

First of all, what most struck me was that it seemed that Darnold got more reps than the other two QBs combined. My reaction was that this means that Bowles, as of today, is leaning towards Sam as the QB for the Giants game and the real season. It felt as though the job is his his to lose.

Secondly, there were only 2-3 deep balls thrown in the entire practice. They are playing as they practice. Even with no tackling, most of the passes would qualify as dinks and dunks. The overall completion percentage was very high, but it should be considering the short distance of most throws. Also, there were many instances when the QB would have been sacked under game conditions. Since the pass rushers have to slow down so as not to hit one of the QBs, there were times when the passer would just stand in the pocket for 5 seconds.

Third, the offense had lots of penalties. Push-ups galore ensued. The whole team also had to run several sideline to sideline sprints. Bowles was pissed.

Finally, this was my first practice not viewed at Hofstra. I like the old venue better because you were right on top of the players there. Of course, the Florham Park facility is much better for the players.

so we got a defensive minded (who's has a lousy defensive system, run by a lousy DC) HC who won't even let his QBs challenge the defense in training camp in late augest??

the sooner we get this timid dope away from darnold the better..

hire an offensive minded HC who can help the kid's development instead of hindering it..

I’m hoping that if and when Darnold starts he will force the CS to open up the playbook. Let’s say after the first 3-5 games he shows signs of having the playbook down and field presence enough to force their hand. Whether by design or by his play making ability, he goes deep a few times or atleast 20 yards multiple times and they realize we have to let this do more if we want to win. If he does that and completes the passes for the most part but their still losing they’ll realize hopefully, if we want to win this dunk and dunk shit ain’t gonna cut it.

i get what you're saying.. i do.. but it shouldn't be the kid's job to play like his hair is on fire for a month, month & a half before being allowed to play big boy football..

if we have drag a kicking & screaming HC into allowing the 3rd pick in the draft to throw downfield, we got the wrong HC..

Not making excuses for him but maybe he just needs to see the kid do it a few times in real action to be sure he can do it. I’m sure he knows he can do it but seeing it in real game action will solidify it for him. He is by nature a defensive minded coach.

Doesn’t Jeremy Bates run the offense? He and Dennison are designing this offense, at least from what I understand.
correct, bates runs the offense & dennison, works under bates.. who in turn, works under bowles, who oddly enough does not work under maccagnan.. they of course, (for whatever reason) are on equal footing as far as ownership is concerned..

in the past 4 years we've had different OCs, offensive assistants, QB coaches, hell, different QBs.. none of these people believe in stretching the field?? the one constant in this scenario is bowles..

translation, bowles answers only at this point to ownership.. not bates, not dennison, not maccagnan.. if he doesn't want the ball to travel 40+ yards out of darnold's right hand, it won't.. if he does want the ball to travel 40+ yards out of darnold's right hand, it will..

so if bates & dennison want to stay on the jets payroll, they will most likely follow their obvious marching orders.. at least from what i understand..

One factor that we should keep in mind is that the offensive line is the weakest part of the team. You need time to throw the ball deep.

no question.. thankfully he's a big athletic kid who moves around in the pocket well while keeping his eyes downfield..

but to essentially not spend any time at a full practice with a prized rookie who is getting the lion share of snaps going into a week 3 preseason game is ass backward..

He won't.
IIRC, two years ago, when Petty was in the lineup at the end of the season, he was successful throwing the ball deep to Anderson.
Last year, when Petty was given the starting QB job at the end of the year, I don't remember a single deep pass called, especially not to Anderson. It was dink and dunk.
Isn't it the job of the coach to put the players in the best position to do what they do well?
It was almost as though Bowles did not want to be reminded what the kid could do, and his game plan/ offensive strategy questioned.

In another thread, someone asked me why I didn't think Bowles is a good game coach.
This is just one example.

I don't think we can judge Bates' or Bowles' willingness to take deep shots until we have an offensive line that is good enough to provide the necessary time. I fully expect this to be addressed in next year's free agency period and the draft. An edge rusher or two also.

we are in year 4.. at what point do we stop trying to figuring out what we have at HC??

a second extension before we know what we got??

Darnold will only go as far as his offensive line lets him. I think we'll be OK if all five starters stay healthy. However, we have no depth. I think there's been enough press and fan forum comments that Mac will focus on it next year. Free agent offensive lineman however, especially good ones, do not come cheap. Guards are getting 12-13 million per year. Price we have to pay to keep our most important asset standing..

Agreed. And if we don't buy an oline next year to protect either one of our franchise QB's then the shit needs to hit the fan

If that's what it costs, then that's what it costs for every other team too so let's go out there and spend

Some of us have been saying we need to upgrade the O Line ever since Mac got here, and we're still waiting. Godot will get here before a good left tackle.

The NFL is a game that is premised on short, accurate passing. Tom Brady is talked about being the best of all time, and all he does is throw short passes extremely accurately.

So the Jets get a guy who does that, and a system that highlights it, and Jets fans complain about it?

The OL is quite in need of improvement, though I am not that worried about Beachum.

Exactly. . I'm happy watching him dink and dunk up and down the field all day while keeping the other teams offense on the sideline. Hopefully our receivers can get 20 30,40 yards after catch like Brady's do too. Makes the qb look.a whole lot better
