Let’s hope you’re right bc that play is just dumb. Goes against everything we’ve heard from him at this point

Told ya . Guys I know it and have felt it for over a year that Darnold is the next great QB and somehow we got him. I've never been this confident in any QB that we have drafted. This kid's head is what makes him so great.

I wonder if the 41 YD TD on third and short was his call or an audible at the line when he read the defense.
If it was an audible, in his first game, this kid has some steel spheres hangin'.

wow, what a way to start a season and a career for darnold. i had to watch the game in tape delay and naturally the kid throws a pick six on the first play and i couldn't help but just laugh.

but wow, did he respond. granted it's one game against what looks like a terrible team, but WOW. he has IT. played with poise (with a couple rookie mistakes), extended plays with his legs, showed good arm strength and just made plays.

what a great all around team performance. offense, defense and special teams. still need to eliminate the penalties, especially the boneheaded type like taunting by a rookie on his first play, and they burned too many timeouts getting the plays in. in closer games these will come back to haunt you. but that was just a great performance. kudos to the staff for getting the team ready to come out of the gates firing on all cylinders.

i gotta say i got a little extra enjoyment watching patricia squirm on the sidelines. probably from too many years of watching him next to belichick. but it was fun to lay it on on a belichick stooge. of course i'd rather beat the real one, but this will do for now.

what a great, great start to the season for the jets, and to a hopefully very long and successful career for darnold

So it was a good game. Some could say it was the Lions failing & lets admit - 5 turn overs & not a good thing. We've been there. Let's talk about Sam. First throw picked. Was it a bad play call? Maybe. Regardless, he had the right attitude. "Well, it can't get any worse than this" - It can only get better now. He snapped back & how. First pass in pro careers being picked, he has good company. Defense was getting picked apart at first but I felt like they adjusted. Offense - we don't have any super stars - we do have a bunch of stars though. Special teams... great punts, run back for a TD - really what more could you ask for. Coaching? Was the first play a bad call for a rookie? Should they done a hand off - run? Maybe but isn't that SO predictable? What about a quick out or short pass? Who knows. All I can say is they must have been doing something right because the coaching effects the whole team & it's morale.

Was upset by ESPN Suzy, asking for a flag for a target? Obnoxious, all of it until the second half then they changed their tune. I'm so done with major brand sports shows. Maybe I'm getting old & crusty but I miss sports shows that are about sports - call me crazy. SNY Post game was good. Bart Scott, Willie Colon, & Ray Lucas... All gave the guys A's except Willie, he gave coaching a B+. You could tell they were all happy & excited. Who wouldn't be? We were. It's hard to not get excited when your team - that you have loved for years upon years - flounders & fails year upon year - & then has a game that you dream about on MONDAY night - the ONLY game on - the game everyone watches. Can't wait for my wife to tell me what happened @ work today - they all know she's a huge Jets fan (she married into it). She's continued to follow them & NFL in general - even with my dismay with the scene. She's a bigger fan than I am now. Wore her Jets scrubs yesterday, put the flag out, had her earrings in, etc - she was all Jetted up. She couldn't be happier - it showed today also. No flag today - well no Jet flag today. American flag today... 17 years. Anyway... I was happy to come back last night. Thanx GMF for your patience & understanding. Thank you (all) for not jumping on my back about the situation I found myself in.

We have 3 games in 11 days - 1 down & 2 to go. The fish... The Browns. Browns tied the Steelers. It's an away game. Until last night - not our strong suit... So, the Browns game will tell me a lot more about our gang in green. However, it's hard to not have some reservations & skepticism - who can blame anyone for that? Then again, after last night - it's hard to not wonder... IS THIS THE YEAR?

Pros:
Special Teams(considering how bad they looked in the pre-season, what a pleasant surprise
OL-nice run blocking, one of the 2 sacks I put on Darnold.
Buster Skrine/Jamal Adams/Claiborne
DL-they were great against the run and put some pressure on MS, but, no sacks.
Sam Darnold-way to rebound kid!
Darron Lee-finally
Quincy Enunwa-Welcome back!
and the Jets fans in Detroit!

Cons:
I hope Johnson is better than what I saw, I know he had a pick, but, I was hoping for a true shutdown corner.
Time management and use of time-outs

Lost in all the euphoria of this victory was the timeout management. I mentioned it early in the game thread, but we burned three timeouts in that first half and it was attributed to an inability to get the playcalls into the huddle on time.

As a few others noted, that’s going to be crucial in a tighter game at some point. That has to get fixed.

Bates has stones, too. To let it fly like that on 3rd and short, and have the confidence in a rookie QB to make that play speaks volumes to how confident they are in him.

I don’t think this coaching staff views Sam as a rookie. He certainly doesn’t act or play like one.

That was as much as I've had watching a Jet game since the Jets beat the Pats in the playoffs. Great effort across the board - the entire team played a tremendous game. I saw three glaring mistakes in the game - the INT pick 6 on the first play, that reverse play call, and the taunting penalty. Otherwise, a great performance.

I am not going to get to get too high or too low. This was one game. We're 1-0, going up against a division opponent at home, and an improved Cleveland team next week. Then the schedule gets even tougher. We can enjoy it - there will be ups and downs this year, there is every season. But you can see this is an improving team.

Some standouts -- Darron Lee obviously. Folks here soured on him early, but I saw significant progress last season. If he can play his style of defense, he can be very good. Quincy - great to have him back. Crowell was awesome. Henry Anderson had a heck of a game. The O-line played a great game. And, Roberts on Special Teams. Darnold was terrific of course. But those players really stood out and showed out.

Now - let's see if this team can handle a little success...it's just one game. I'd view if the same way if we were on the losing end. The final score means we're 1-0.

I didn't write anything last evening because I wanted to enjoy the game. Not to rain on anyone parade but the team played well in all phases of the game and frankly there are rumors that the Lions aren't buying what the beard is selling and you saw it last evening. So its a combination of this team playing well and the other team not so well... it happens all the time.

I thought the team was prepared, I was shocked by the ST play and frankly Lee's play. He was all over the field last night. I am hopeful this is the start of our team playing to its capabilities and I do expect some miscues, some bad decisions but am happy because I think we have our FQB.

By the way, Gas, give the kid a break will yea, I mean he thews some bullets last evening including a 40 yard TD..

Here's whats so weird about that IMO, he was a second late in throwing that ball. It looked to me like he hesitated for a second more to either make sure that he truly faked the safety out and/or to make sure that Robby had the DB beat. Either way, it looked to me like Robby had to wait a step or two for the ball and then fight the DB for the catch. If Darnold would have thrown the ball a second earlier, Robby would have ran ride up under it with ease for the TD. If what I was looking at was correct, I understand Darnold hesitated a second longer to make sure that it was going to be a 50-50 ball and it wasn't going to be intercepted. He wasn't going to turn the ball over again and he said that in his press conference. I loved the throw and attempt even more because it shows they will take their shots every now and then. Also shows the confidence they have in Darnold and the potential this kid has in him.

I saw the same thing, but to me the best part was that even though he was a little late he didn't float the ball their. He zipped it in their with confidence. And the ball got their quickly.

Unsung hero of the game: Jason Myers. Apart form 2 for 2 FG's, every kick off through the end zone for touchbacks (were any returned? I don't remember if there were). Didn't allow any chance of Detroit establishing field position and possibly changing momentum. I'll take that all year long...

Yes it did but Darnold will have to still get more comfortable in this NFL game. If you look at that replay again, if Anderson was being guarded by a top notch DB like the kid from Jacksonville or the one from New Orleans that might have been a int. That DB guarding Anderson never really turned around. Well actually he did but he looked back to late and Anderson faught him to get the ball. Not criticizing Darnold at all, I love the kid, it was his first NFL live action game and I believe the kid will be our 20 year franchise SB winning QB, but he’ll have to learn waiting a second to late against certain defenders and certain defenses will lead to a sack or a turnover.

Myers booted every one deep into the end zone. All touch backs from what I can remember. 2-2 in FG’s. We might have found our kicker.

How about Andre Roberts at punt returner? He didn’t fair catch the ball. He had three nice returns, setting up great field position. And a big TD return. This guy looks like the best PR the Jets have ever had!
