Now for the O-Line

Since Mike Maccagnan has been hired as GM, he has brought in the following offensive linemen: Kelvum Beachum, James Carpenter, Jonathan Harrison, Brandon Shell, Kelechi Osemele, and Spencer Long. You stated he’s only “modestly addressed” the o-line. That’s six o-line acquisitions via the draft, trade, and FA.

Now you can argue with the results, especially the run blocking last year. But Beachum was the best available LT at the time Macc signed him, Carpenter was also a top rated Guard when we got him, and the Osemele trade was vintage theft by Macc. (Swapping 5th and 6th rounders? Really, for a 29 year old, 2X pro bowler?)

This isn’t to suggest I’m happy with the current line. Still think an upgrade at Center is needed, and Beachum’s eventual replacement needs to be here by next season. But previous talk of Macc’s “ignoring the o-line” isn’t factual. He’s been here since 2015 and addressed a lot of other areas with a higher priority, but he hasn’t ignored the o-line.

C'mon Brick, Carpenter was the only actual signing that was good. Beachum was a band-aid till we found a LT and that has been put on hold.. Carpenter had 2 good years then has tailed off. Harrison is crap and you can sugar coat it anyway you want, he still is crap. Long is like winters, always hurt and less effective. Shell is still a question mark and we will see what happens with him this year. I don't know where or how you think Osemele was vintage theft by Macc. He's 29, 10+ million dollar contract. IMO the Raiders fleeced the Jets. You talk as if his 2 Pro Bowl years will automatically turn him into an all-world OG. Those Pro-bowl years are long gone as is the effectiveness of Osemele. Yes, the Jets have modestly addressed the OL. When Darnold gets hurt is when you will know how good our line is.

When Maccagnan doesn’t do enough, he gets killed. And when he does find a player, he gets killed.

Left tackle is not a position that you’re gonna find pro bowl caliber players in FA. Those guys get locked up quick by their teams. For Macc to get Beachum, a solid yet not spectacular player, was a good get. He was our highest rated pass protector last year. Exactly what you want from a LT. The Jets problems were much more interior based. Long injured his snapping finger and Bowles left him in there too long. Everyone could see that except Bowles/Bates, apparently. Shell has shown the steady progress you’d hope for in a middle round pick. As far as Osemele, he got paid that fat contract by the Raiders for a reason. He was one of the best o-linemen in the NFL. And 29 isn’t exactly old for an o-linemen. They often play well into their thirties. We’ll have to disagree about him, because I believe he’s still an above average player at worst.

Wisniewski is getting up there in age, isn't he? He'd be a solid back up, not sure he's a starter at this point in his career.

The Jets have just signed a guard who played for the Vikes last year. Does this mean they are still looking at Wisniewski. I would hope so. It appears Compton has never played the center position his entire nfl career.

i'm not sure what wisniekswi has left in the tank, but i'd hope that the signing of a guy like compton doesn't mean they won't continue to look for additional veteran players on the o-line.

Compton is just a depth guy. Or he better be.

I never said ignoring but I did say he's modestly addressed the OL and you made my point with the names you mentioned. Show me anyone of the aforementioned who's an above average offensive lineman. I will agree Carpenter was good when he first got here and bringing in Osemele seems like a good move if he can revert back to old form. However, in 4 years (2015-18) Mac has drafted two offensive linemen and both in the 5th round Jarvis Harrison and Shell. Shell "may" be a good pick but he has not spent any draft capital on building the most important unit on a team. I may admittedly be a little obsessed with the big fatty's up front and wit as a big downer day when Paradis signed in Carolina but show me a good team and a confident QB and I'll show you a good offensive line in front of him.

Paradis was reportedly in the NY area, and in touch with the Jets during the very busy period when the Jets were handling Barr and Mosley, and monitoring the LeVeon Bell situation. Then Barr pulls a U-Turn on the Jets, and soon thereafter Paradis signs with Carolina. I can only imagine the head spinning during those days.

Point being, it sounds like the Jets were in on Paradis and he opted for the Panthers. I don’t assume that’s a failure on Maccagnan’s part. For all we know Macc had a competitive offer on the table, and the player just wanted to go somewhere else. I don’t know, and nobody else does either, except for those close to the situation.

We landed some good players. Particularly Mosley, Osemele, and Bell. You aren’t going to get everyone. There’s a lot of other teams offering crazy money, too. We still have time to bolster the line between now and September. Losing Paradis wasn’t the end of the world.

Paradis would have made FA a home run for Mac, but him choosing Carolina or Mac blowing it doesn't change the fact that we missed a chance to completely change the OL. We have to draft at least 2 OL. I think Osemele bolsters the OL similar to what Faneca did. Faneca made Brick and Mangold better. Osemele will make Beachum and maybe Harrison better. Mac did a great job trading for Osemele.

The players we are getting for the O-line we might as well be called the "Over the Hill Gang" as the Redskins were called in the early 70's. Still I would rather pick up a Mangold in the Draft and maybe a D'Brick.

well sure. but there's no OT worthy of the 3rd pick (brick was 4th) and the jets don't pick again until the 3rd round, as opposed to 2006 when they had two first rounders. but yeah, i think most here would sign up to get our next nick and brick in the draft

The next Nick anyway, center is a gaping hole.

Not to say we wouldn’t be better off if we drafted a 1st round center, but since we don’t seem to have the ammo to draft that elusive edge rusher and another Mangold, we won’t be terrible with Harrison for now. We went an entire season with Wesley Johnson as our center, and he was a turnstile disguised as a football player. Harrison is way better, and he didn’t do a bad job as a fill in.

Jets are one of five teams reportedly interested in Giants backup Guard/Center Brett Jones. He’s 28, and supposedly he graded out pretty well.
