Ham, I agree with your initial post for this thread 100 percent but allow me to take it a step further:
I’m not a college guy so please forgive me if I’m wrong and correct me as well. What bothered me the most about the draft is besides Williams and maybe Polite, it doesn’t seem like he picked the best players available at the positions he drafted them. I’m not talking about him drafting other position players beside who he drafted. I’m simply talking about him drafting higher graded players at each draft pick besides Williams and maybe Polite.
No I can’t give you the names of each player that would have been better or rated higher then the ones he drafted. However; from what I’m reading from you guys and going off the pundits ratings of players, besides Williams and maybe Polite, Mac did not draft the best players at the position he drafted them. Overall, Mac seemed to have reached quite a bit from the fourth round picks on, maybe even the Polite pick.
Polite has the potential to be an All-pro or better it appears. They said if it wasn’t for his attitude and off the field issues, he would he been a first round grade. So there probably wasn’t a ER available rating higher then him to draft. However; he is a big boom or bust risk player. So let’s all hope for the BOOM!
The oline men was a much needed pick but there were higher ranked oline men on the board to draft. Why didn’t Mac draft one of them? I guess it’s the relationship and familiarity he has with Darnold. That doesn’t mean it will transition into the NFL. Hopefully this kid turns out to be what we need.
Tresco pick was the same deal. I’m sure there had to have been better rated or at least one better rated TE then Tresco? His highlights look great so maybe he will turn out to be the real deal. The fact that he is a primary blocking TE and played a fair amount of FB, that should help the team greatly.
The CB is a true reach because of the injury risk. He has the size and skill set they say to be a true player but his INJURIES were serious business. If he’s truly recovered and can stay healthy then we may have ourselves a player but that is a big IF.
That other LB we drafted seemed to be totally unnecessary, unwarranted and overkill. Was this kid even worth drafting? Would anyone else have drafted him or could we have signed him as a UDFA? Will this kid even make the team or practice squad? Oh, did I forget to mention that this kid also has an injury history!!!
Overall, Mac seemed to reach on 4 and maybe even five of his picks and that ain’t good. That’s definitely not drafting smart. Adding salt to the wound was the two trades he made to draft these reach players. Let’s all hope it works out.
