4 weeks verses 4 years

Mike Maccagnan had four years to get things right but failed to do the one thing that matter build an offensive line from the ground up and depth for development for the future. The current state of the offensive line is completely different as of today. Yes Maccagnan did make the trade to get Osmele prior to the draft but all in all, his moves have been less than spectacular to say the least.

In four weeks, the new leader in the front office has not only convinced a retired pro bowler to come out of retirement and sign with the team. One of the positions that everyone agreed was a major need at center. Snagging the services of Ryan Kalil was not only a need but an improvement, for just one year gives us the ability to draft next year the replacement or re up if RK wants to return on another one year deal. Then acquiring the services of another talented interior lineman via trade shows that this GM isn't afraid to make things happen.

Looking at the roster now, shows that the entire team is starting to become a more fluid juggernaut where competing within our division is not the only thing on the table. Are we close to being a true contender, um after those two additions on the offensive line I would have to say yes. There are still questions on defense, one position in particular corner-back. I think right now we have a competitive roster and if a veteran shakes free during preseason roster cuts we may add someone to solidify the secondary.

I admit I was worried bringing in the Head Coach's friend to be the G.M., but the new G.M. is running the team the right way and not taking orders but giving em. Time will tell but it seems we have the right people doing the right things. As for the coaching staff still a little on edge to have a division rival's waste but it could be good, we shall see...

I think we finally have a GM and I'm impressed with what Gase brings to the table. I could change my mind after week 1, but it sounds like we are turning this around.

Is the o-line that different?

Beachum, Shell, and Osemele were all brought in under Maccagnan. That’s 3/5 of our starters. And Winters has been here since before even Maccagnan.

We keep repeating this statement that Macc neglected the o-line. It’s a fallacy. You can argue that he didn’t do a good enough job securing better players at that specific unit, but saying he neglected, or forgot about, or ignored the unit isn’t true. No matter how much people who hated him insist to the contrary.

With that said, I’m happy Douglas is an o-line guy. I believe he will upgrade the line and ultimately have a great line in front of Darnold within a year. The Kalil signing was very impressive. The other kid he signed today appears to be a depth move, but that could change.

douglas has brought in at least 1 starting OLmen since training camp opened.. what does that say about what douglas believes he inherited from maccagnan's 4 year commitment to that unit??

Kahlil and Lewis are band aids, but necessary to give Darnold the best opportunity to succeed this year. Don't get me wrong, Kahlil is an excellent addition, but obviously not the long term solution. Lewis is very good depth when healthy, but the long term answers will start to arrive next offseason. I have faith that JD will make sure that happens.

Agreed! Oline has improved with the moves Douglas has made but the oline is pretty much the same it was when Mac was here. That right there says Mac did address and build the oline. Did he do it good enough, especially in the depth chart area that will be debatable and I would say no but he did address it. Now I do believe that if Douglas was here since Gase was hired or before the oline would be totally different and better. What I mean is he most likely would have traded our #3 pick for more draft picks and drafted probably two first rounders or a first and second round oline men to be day oline starters. He might not have traded for Osemele or maybe he would have done that as well. Our starting oline would be totally different if Douglas was here from day one.

all I am saying in four weeks as the new G.M. he has acquired two talented players that shows he knows what is important not only to the offense but the continued development of Sam Darnold...

at the end of the day:

everyone on the offensive line is either in contract year or are rookies that aren't guaranteed moving post this year and what this line may look like will be different after this year...

making a trade for a 27 year old (before he was waived) that has starting ability and talking a recently retired center to come out and sign with us is huge... Paying veterans in their decline to help bolster instead of drafting developmental options has hindered us for the past four years is effecting us now and the near future...
