Mike Maccagnan had four years to get things right but failed to do the one thing that matter build an offensive line from the ground up and depth for development for the future. The current state of the offensive line is completely different as of today. Yes Maccagnan did make the trade to get Osmele prior to the draft but all in all, his moves have been less than spectacular to say the least.
In four weeks, the new leader in the front office has not only convinced a retired pro bowler to come out of retirement and sign with the team. One of the positions that everyone agreed was a major need at center. Snagging the services of Ryan Kalil was not only a need but an improvement, for just one year gives us the ability to draft next year the replacement or re up if RK wants to return on another one year deal. Then acquiring the services of another talented interior lineman via trade shows that this GM isn't afraid to make things happen.
Looking at the roster now, shows that the entire team is starting to become a more fluid juggernaut where competing within our division is not the only thing on the table. Are we close to being a true contender, um after those two additions on the offensive line I would have to say yes. There are still questions on defense, one position in particular corner-back. I think right now we have a competitive roster and if a veteran shakes free during preseason roster cuts we may add someone to solidify the secondary.
I admit I was worried bringing in the Head Coach's friend to be the G.M., but the new G.M. is running the team the right way and not taking orders but giving em. Time will tell but it seems we have the right people doing the right things. As for the coaching staff still a little on edge to have a division rival's waste but it could be good, we shall see...
