You have to take a risk if you hope to cash in big. We'll see. I think he goes to Tampa anyway. *shrug*

Your probably correct. The media is pounding us over the head with "it's a done deal" rhetoric. Interesting thing is, a month ago BEFORE the Ducks blew out the Noles, the media was beating us over the head with, "Mariota to the Bucs, done deal". Mariota had a bad game in the National Championship, so I guess he has suddenly fallen way behind Winston. Not sure about that.

I suspect Winston isn't going to run a very good time at the combine (He's not very fast) and Mariota is going to burn the 40 up, and become the media darling again. (Not sure what foot speed has to do with being an NFL QB, but Vick got a 100 million because he's fast)

What's cool about the NFL draft is all the intrigue. No one is going know what is going to happen with Winston/Mariota until our good friend Roger walks up to the podium and says "With the firs pick in the 2015 NFL draft......................................

Just for the record, if the Jets wind up with Mariota at 6, I'll be good with that also, just prefer Winston

I hope we get Bradford or Foles in a couple weeks via trade and look to trade down for a slew of picks when mariota and/or winston falls in our laps...

agreed.. aside from absolutely bombing his team interviews i can't see winston still on the board at 6..

but if he's there at 6 i think you almost have to take him..

So, if he bombs interviews so bad that no one jumps at his enormous talent at #1s 1-5 you want to take him at #6 ? That's a pretty big risk with a premium pick. You are better off with more of a sure thing like Sherff or Cooper, etc. than an immature guy who can find all of the wrong kind of attention in NY.

I'd take Bradford or Foles as insurance policies. If Winston/Mariota is on the board when the Jets pick, I run up the isle with the pick. Neither Bradford, always hurt, or Foles, Philly fans were actually glad to see Sanchez come in last year, are the long term solution.

Winston/Mariota may be. Or maybe not. LOL

Because Philly fans are rationale thinkers...and if you meet a Philly fan that is a rationale thinker, you met the first one...like finding a unicorn (if you find one of those, let me know too)!

fair or not after finally getting a chance to watch mariota in the championship game i came away completely unimpressed.. nothing jumped out at me the said this kid's going to be a star at the next level.. i'd heard how fast mariota is & he is.. but i didn't see the flashes of elusivness.. straight line speed is great but if you don't have wiggle, you end up taking unnecessary (robert griffin) big shots.. & it's always a scary proposition to have to teach QB the position after drafting him high in the first round..

Even in the 4th round, Jets could of drafted Martvis Bryant, Kevin Norwood, or Bruce Ellington who would of made an contribution to the Jets offense. I like Jace Amaro, I'm not angry that the Jets passed on a wide receiver during the 2nd round. Amaro lead in catches and yards amongst all rookie tight ends who were draft and he only had 34% of the starting reps as a tight end. That's impressive.

Last year's draft class was filled with great and talented wide receivers the fact that the scouting department and John Idzik missed big time on this opportunity is completely disappointing, and potentially the reason why their no longer working for the Jets. This year's draft class also has some talented wide receiver such as Cooper,White, Parker, Strong, Agholor, etc. Although Geno Smith is a very inconsistent, Decker still managed to get almost 1,000 yards I do feel if the Jets had a wide receiver to play along side with Decker that the Jets offense would of been better.

What makes Sherff or Cooper more of a sure thing? Remember reading what a sure thing Gholson was going to be. The Next LT.

No sure things in the NFL draft. If your going to take a shot with a top pick, and there is a potential franchise QB on the board, I'd rather lose my job because I took a shot at him, and missed, then watch him win Super Bowls, and still get fired, with the legacy of the idiot who passed on a HOF QB, when your team desperately need any kind of a QB

Your right. Not very impressive in that game. IMO, and I stress it's just my opinion, I think Mariota is going to be a good QB at the next level. Maybe not a Pro Bowler, but a guy you can win with.

That would be refreshing alone.

Yeah, I guess I've been spoiled by all the rational I've seen from Jets fans on message boards over the years

Agree with 95% of this.

The weird part is, the guy who was running the scouting department, and should have been responsible for the draft, Rod Graves, is still with the team. He was the interim GM when Idzik was fired. He also interviewed for the job. I was terrorized he was going to get hired as GM.

I wonder if he is going to be Woody's new pet. It's a weird situation that Bowles doesn't have to answer to Macc, but reports directly to Woody. Woody is a good businessman, not so much with football.

I'm just wondering if Graves is going to be the one blowing in Woody's ear.

But Wadeasegund. ...Wadeasegund.

Famous football guru and expert Sacred Water Buffalo jockey Manish Mehta had the big scoop that he was fired.....

Graves was/is the director of football admin. He was an experienced person for Idzik to lean on and currently is going to handle contract negotiations for Macc(since Macc has no experience in that). Supposedly, he'll be reevaluated post draft as there were rumors that Macc wanted Gene Smith for that role.

Terry Bradway ran the scouting department as senior director of college scouting. Jeff Bauer worked with him as director of college scouting. Brandon Prophet was(currently is although it's expected that he'll be fired post draft) the head of pro personnel(Brian Heimerdinger has been hired as director of player personnel which makes him the head of both pro and college).

That's strange. Everything I have read on him say's his background is in Scouting, and that's why Idzik brought him in. Can't imagine why he would suddenly be the cap guy. Just a sample

Jets hire ex-Cards GM Rod Graves

Updated: June 10, 2013, 2:27 PM ET

By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com

The New York Jets, continuing to restructure their front office under new general manager John Idzik, hired former Arizona Cardinals GM Rod Graves Monday as the senior director of football administration.

It will be a role reversal for Graves, who served as Idzik's boss in Arizona from 2004 to 2007. The two remained close, and it was reported a month ago that Idzik was targeting Graves for a position. They met as ball boys for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Graves was fired this offseason by the Cardinals after a 5-11 season, their third straight year out of the playoffs. He spent 16 years with the organization, the last nine in charge of the football operation. He had one year remaining on his contract.

Graves has a scouting background, so he should be a good complement to Idzik, who came up through the ranks primarily as a contract negotiator and cap expert.

Since replacing Mike Tannenbaum, who was fired after the season, Idzik has overhauled the front office, the scouting department and the roster.

The Jets parted ways with three executives, including assistant general manager Scott Cohen. Graves will step into the role of second in command.

The Jets also announced the hiring of Matt Bazirgan as the assistant director of pro personnel. Previously, he was an area scout. Rick Courtright was named the national college scout.

Idzik also had to replace four college scouts, two of whom were let go. He named four new scouts, including former Jets and Houston Texans cornerback Aaron Glenn, who spent last season with the Jets as a pro scout. The other new scouts are David Boller, David Hinson and Christopher Prescott.

Of Tannenbaum's closest advisers, only three survived the front-office shakeup, including former GM and current senior personnel executive Terry Bradway.

He didn't "run" the scouting department. That was Bradway. Just like if Macc brings in Gene Smith....... he has a scouting background too. He still wouldn't be doing the jobs of Brian Heimerdinger and Rex Hogan. I have no doubt that Idzik leaned on Graves, but the draft was influenced by Bradway.

Graves, as a gm, has experience with contract negotiations. That's what Macc would be interested in him for. Idzik didn't need him for that, he needed someone that he trusted(worked with him in Arizona) with experience to assist him as a first time gm.
