Maye day approaching

The Jets have 18 days to sign safety Marcus Maye to a contract extension or else he will play the season on the franchise tag ($10.6 million), setting up a likely departure in 2022. For a couple of reasons, this is a litmus-test negotiation for the organization, which has trouble retaining its homegrown talent (see: Jamal Adams, Sam Darnold and Leonard Williams.)

Adams wanted out, in part, because he didn't like the culture. The Jets, under new coach Robert Saleh, have made progress in that area. They added some quality players in free agency, fueling the positive momentum. It would dampen the mood if they can't strike an agreement with Maye, a captain and team MVP in 2020.

This is a big one for general manager Joe Douglas, who has yet to complete a splashy contract extension. (Sorry, I'm not counting tight end Ryan Griffin and guard Alex Lewis.) Maye would be a good place to start. The former second-round pick is the longest-tenured player on the team and is well-respected in the locker room.

What is a fair price? There are two perspectives.

The Jets probably see it this way: Based on experience and production, Maye's contract should be in line with that of Cleveland Browns safety John Johnson, who hit free agency in March and signed for three years, $33.75 million -- $11.25 million per year. The contract includes a $20 million guarantee.

Johnson and Maye, both drafted in 2017, have similar career numbers.

Maye: 54 games, 6 interceptions, 22 passes defensed, 4 forced fumbles and 2.5 sacks.

Johnson: 54 games, 8 interceptions, 32 passes defensed, 1 forced fumble and no sacks.

Chances are, Maye is looking for something in the neighborhood of $14 million per year, an APY that would put him in a tie for fifth among safeties. He can argue he's entitled to that much because, by definition, a franchise tag is the average of the top five salaries at the position. The bar was raised recently by the Denver Broncos' Justin Simmons ($15.25 million APY), and it will go higher when Adams lands his extension from the Seattle Seahawks.

If there's one thing we've learned about Douglas in two years, it's that he's a hard-line negotiator. It's tough to keep players who don't want to be there, and it's tough to keep players who overprice themselves. That will change when/if they become a desirable place. Maybe the worm will turn with Maye.

I hope he signs something team friendly. depends on the direction he believes this team is headed I'm sure

Maybe Douglas is looking to keep only the players he drafted or signed in FA. Or perhaps they feel they have a better player waiting to take over for Maye.

They should sign Maye. The guy has done nothing but deliver on the field and has caused no DRAMA at all. A rarity in this day and age if you ask me. The Guy is a Football Player first and foremost. You need to keep those guys.

I agree with SACK - its refreshing that Douglas thinks with his head and not his heart(and seemingly has total control without intervention of a dopey owner or an emotional coach), He obviously crafted what he thought was an appropriate offer for Maye in light of all relevant factor/circumstances and put it on the table.

Winning in today's NFL has as much to do with smartly managing the salary cap as anything else. Maye is a very good player and guy(from what I understand), but has really had only one very good season, plays safety, and is 28. Let us not forget the signings of Wilkerson, Revis, Johnson and even the huge unwarranted extension to Sanchez ETC in which emotion replaced sound football, character and common sense(human nature).

belichick has always run things this way, not overpaying for anyone, and it has always worked for him.

the difference is, when belichjck went to the cheatahs, he went to a team with good defensive players that already had played under him and Parcells, and then he brought in most of the Jets defense and they caught lightning in a bottle and never looked back. they became a team that everyone wanted to play for, for cheap, to get a ring, like tompabay now is.

this way of thinking works great when you are winning and players want to play on your team. if we happen to shock the world this year and win some games, maybe we start to become the place players want to play. without wins, we remain the Jets

I don't think Douglas is going to pay Maye what he wants and we will eventually trade him for picks and maybe a throw in player.

Maye reportedly presented a contract to the Jets which since has been pulled back was for $15 M per avg not sure on length but heard the guarantees were ridiculous.

wow, Joe Douglas reportedly offered Maye an annual of $8 M per year before franchise tagging him...

guess we now know where JD's belief in Maye's value is...

May's offer was pulled once tagged because it was below the starting point for tagged players, (avg of 2 years franchise tag) So it was definitely below 11.5 mill.
Should have offered him a respectable deal with 3 years guaranteed and a 4th and 5th year non guaranteed. Keep seeing fans post dont pay a 30 year old, but May wont be 30 until the 2023 season. At some point, you have to pay your own. More bad optics for current and future players.

My sentiment exactly. Not paying a good and dedicated player that has earned a payday, in spite of the fact that it's not considered a high value position by some, doesn't likely make the players currently on the roster very hopeful of getting paid fairly for their effort. Neither does it make the Jets an attractive destination for future desired free agency additions. I understand Joe's mindset of not over spending if possible, but, he needs to learn the difference between being frugal and downright cheap. I'm more concerned about the message this sends throughout the NFL about the financial fairness of the Jets than I am about the loss of the player.

Just hope he is rewarded. As really think it is time. For him to be rewarded. For keeping his mouth shut. Letting his play do the talking

He will be rewarded after this season. I have no doubt about that. However; the likely hood of it being by the Jets has just decreased dramatically. There are several reports out there that several teams valued him near what he was asking. How true those reports are I have no idea but I believe he will get a fair deal from someone next season. I'm disappointed that the Jets low balled him the way they did.

Lets hope some teams will offer high value picks for him this year and someone on this years roster steps up and replaces Maye.

If Maye wants top 3 safety money, then he needs to play like a top 3 safety, period.
He had a decent year on a shit team, with an injury riddled defense.
Does that make him a top 3 safety in the league? No.
Does paying him top 3 money, make him a top 3 player? No.
Let’s see how he plays, this year, in this system, at the SS position.
If he makes it to the pro bowl or even better, an all pro, then he can throw out those numbers.
Im rooting for him to do so. I hope he cements a payday with the Jets.

Why do Jet fans always side with management over players like it's their money the player is taking ? Is it Marcus Maye's turn to get the Jamal Adams treatment ? One of the reasons among many that this team never wins is simply that they don't keep any decent players due to not wanting to pay them .Since Walt Michaels got fired the Jets have failed to build anything resembling a team .
