What is the overall consensus about Braxton Berrios?

Ever heard of Mickey Shuler or Jerome Barkum ?

he wasn't born then...$hit, i was still a kid for Shuler. And he was great!

DWC raises a good point though, and one worth focusing on. GM's and Coaches have focused on "unicorn" types of players on both sides of the ball for years...the "#1" WR- with height, weight, speed, and route running ability, the "Edge" who is a tweener that can cover and tackle and has pass rush moves, the 3-4 DE who is not big enough to be a 0, but big enough to take on multiple blockers- you get the point.

IMO, the easiest "unicorn" spot to fill is the modern TE...(a.) they have to block as much as a WR in most cases, (b.) athletes are being born massive today, and (c.) these freaks of nature can haul @$$ too...get one, and make him soak the paws in "Palmolive" like "Madge".

i can down a beer, wait for the 'seal to break', and then take a p!$$ before Griff and/or Kroft can run a TE screen.
Gotta get more athletic at this spot...been so for years.

maybe we can send Yeboah to TE College over the summer. he has the physical goods.

as to Berrios...20 million for 5 years with a 12 million sign on. He retires a Jet, and never raises questions over a reneg.

problem has been finding the minimum requirements in one body for a TE - we've taken our turns with the pass catchers that have too many drops and/or can't block for 1 second. I'm no TE expert but lining alongside OL they have a critical function to protect the QB as well help the run game.....and if they cannot even do that basic function well enough then you get buried fast unless you are outstanding doing something else. None of who we have fits the latter......they are all flawed.

Alot of good points made, hes a kick / punt returner, gadget on offense. Struggles greatly against man coverage. $3 million would be absolutely the max.
Drafting another WR possibly adding a second via free agency or Mims showing up opens Moore to take on some of those gadget plays.
His value is as a returner.

here is the long and the short of it...let's not get Jason Myers'ed or Andre Roberts'ed.

we have enough holes to fill without creating new ones...we can cross off return specialist by opening the wallet a bit more than normal for a specialist; who happens to be a reliable receiver.

Roberts is getting $4.6 for two years with $3 guaranteed. Berrios is a backup receiver gadget man.
He is in the Pharoh Cooper , Isaiah McKenzie, Adam Humphries tier. $1.1-$1.2 million per year range.
If offered $3 million per over 4 years with 9-10 guaranteed, he should jump on it.

Yes. Old school Jets TEs. I only heard about them because of my grandfather. I was born in 1985 so those guys were before my time.

Speaking of my grandpa. I created my username because of him. For as much as he loved Joe Namath his favorite players were Gerry Philbin and especially Larry Grantham. Every year growing up as kids he'd always re-watch the Jets vs. Colts game with me and my older brother (the night before opening season kickoff) and always preached DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS while watching the game because our D won it for him. Held Baltimore to only 7 points (4th Q TD), picked off Morrall 3x and picked off Unitas 1x and destroyed them both. Joe Namath made the prediction and got the spotlight but it was our Defense + Running game who won us that SB game. Damn I miss my old man.
Also Herman moving from guard to tackle for both playoff games...never gets any credit for that

i was willing to go up to 4 per for 5 years...12 million guaranteed. $$$ that will turn into results.

I think he can be another Welker or Edelman if given the reps.

1.) He is literally identical to Welker in height and weight. he is faster than Welker, and quicker than Welker...faster and quickness as measured by 40 & shuttle in combine workouts. In fact, Welk's MIA stats aren't jumping off the page at anyone and are only slightly better than #10's.

2.) He in only slightly smaller than Edelman by an inch and 5pounds. faster and quicker (combine/#10 to pro-day #11) . it took Edelman 4 years to amass the stats #10 has now...because #10 was actually a receiver.

Those 2 got a shot like the rest of the munchkin receivers they had...Givens, Branch, Brown.
What they didn't get was "labeled".

Don't be shocked to see other teams who already have their #1 WR (who knows when that became an actual position) value him more than we do.

Draft a #1 WR out of Alabama, A #1 RG out of Tex A&M or #1 RT out of Alabama and a 2nd Rd TE pick and our Offensive problems are solved.

Difference is, Berrios cant get open vs man coverage.
I like Berrios, hope we keep him but his limitations as a starting WR limit his overall value.

Nobody is calling Berrios a starting WR . What he is, is an important part of the team that makes plays when given the opportunity.

he is a role player on offense, at best
can spot start if someone gets hurt but he is return specialist that provides some flexibility on offense

Well if you read the post I responded to, the poster was comparing him to Edelman and Welker . Claimed his opinion was he would be as good as them with their # of reps. I simply pointed out his struggles with man coverage.

Thank you for summarizing my last 4 post.
We finally agree on something.....😁
I always saw Berrios as an x-factor
He can start, but limited in his role
Unless they find another return specialist they can expand his role on offense

I hope he stays, I believe he can play an important role here. Just dont necessarily agree with some $ amounts others seem to think he should receive.

for a role player that can receive, run and is a special team ace returner (punt) but is capable of kick returns as well...
he is quicker than fast and for this type of contract it will be around $3.5 annual, now the technicality of the contract on wording, guarantees and any offsets is not my thing but like I said being that he is 25 next year be 26 can give him that base 4 year deal no more than $22 M in total I think $14 total is more than enough with the fourth year with no guarantees in it just in case...

i think you'll have a Jet for life with that contract, and somebody is going to figure out he isn't just a role receiver on offense during that contract period...my bet is on Zach to do that.

reps and an upgraded cast of receivers & TE's.
he is never going to be on go-routes, or 15 yard digs...if we are asking him for them, then we have the wrong WR.

if he is asked to be the receiver on a bubble screen, WR Screen, the outlet in 4 WR set, he can flourish...just like Welk and Edelman did.
FTR, he had a nice day on Sunday against a Jag D that runs a lot of man on zero coverage blitz packs.
