But if you go back to the beginning from 1933( yes before my time @cheaterhater ) the Avg was 9 points per came climbing to 15-16 til 1942
Then climbing thru the teens to the low 20s by 1947-48 were it still stands today
Actually in the 70s it dropped into the high teens for a few years .
I think the Jets for the entire 70sdecade had a hand in that

The rule changes from the 60s and 70s have basically taken playin defense in the NFL nearly impossible
Yes but does the clock now run faster & more often then it did in those days? Less time to score would mean more points

I think in 2008 they changed the out of bounds clock stoppage from always to the last 2 min of half and last 5 min of game
