Free Agency first
I don't like neither
Right now the team has DE JFM, Bryce Huff, Tim Ward they need a bookend that has more than one pass rush attack in their arsenal and do not want to draft an EDGE that high comes with a 5th year team option

those numbers will only go up for a player taken in the top 5 this year and what if he in 4 years get to one or two pro bowls, quarterback money not worth it if he is producing but the team is failing
We all know JFM projects as a 43 DT, but until they make that position change he is still a 43 DE...
Carl Lawson won't be back until mid season and even then he won't be fully recovered...
Priorities in the draft are simple take that IOL or OT with the 4th overall pick...
Opens up trade possibilities with the 10th pick...
If not mistaken Q was a pro bowl alternate this year which should qualify as 1 Pro Bowl $16.6 M 5th year money...
Food for Thought, Quinnen could of exercised a new contract this off season but chose not too... Why you ask well the team is more than likely to pick up his 5th year team option this off season right now it stands at $16.6 M and if next year he has similar success and gets a 2nd nod his 5th year team money goes to $20.1 M, meaning his base line on a contract extension just went up especially in that 5th year he goes to a third pro bowl... Can't fathom having a D Line getting paid like the O Line...

signing a tendered 4th or 5th year restricted free agent that does not cost us a draft pick is another option...
trading for potential is also on the table...

sign an affordable stop gap player while drafting a day 3 project is another way to go...
expect the Jets to exhaust all efforts but we did just sign Bradlee Anae who could be that guy...

Plenty of day 3 prospect will be available at 43 DE who we can develop in the meantime. If Q doesn’t pickup his game that big contract he’s expecting might come from another team .

Q is here to stay, JD acknowledges the importance of in the trenches... But Q, JFM can not do it alone they have to find a veteran outside Lawson to come in and contribute... There are options through free agency that is affordable... Bryce Huff, Tim Ward, Hamilcar Rashed Jr., Bradlee Anae are going to compete for role playing time... But who are the starters? Draft day 2 an interior d lineman to line up with Q if JFM is the DE... That is why free agency is the best place to find that EDGE defensive end... IF and When Carl Lawson comes back it would be a formidable foursome with developmental talent (role players) as backups...
he won't re-sign they didn't pick up his 5th year team option but re-signed him to $2.8 M on his fifth year guarantee he is gone...
he fits the type of defensive end that Saleh employs... Someone that can rush the passer with a substantial pass rush arsenal but play the run as well, he would step in for Carl Lawson immediately and be an upgrade over the likes of Shaq Lawson, Bryce Huff and Tim Ward...
The main issue would be who will they draft or sign to play as the other interior defensive lineman?

This would be a better starting lineup then last year, finding that comparable tandem for Q inside the key to make this d line run better...
Perrion Winfrey or Phidarian Mathis make sense on day 2... Why JFM is not kicked inside is head scratching as he is definitely a better interior rusher than on the EDGE...
Free agency will be interesting this year because it will make a much clearer depiction of what the base roster will be...
Lawson was listed to be RE but he is better suited on the left side because of this style defense...
Lawson's absence might be the reason JFM stayed at DE and the reason they extended him early on in the season knowing he would be a part of the design moving forward...
Hopefully they do move him inside because he is a good run defender that has good interior rush arsenal to penetrate the pocket while set the gaps against the run... I really do think JFM & Q on the inside would work well together moving forward... It just becomes who will be the Ends on this line...

This right here would be an upgrade to our situation on the D Line
Robert Saleh needs versatility on the defensive line
Guys that can play the run as well as push the pocket
If the Saints could be selling players for late round draft picks, wonder if Joe Douglas could pry Granderson from their grips
If not Arden Key excelled with Saleh, a bit on the lighter side but has the ability to rotate with Huff
There are other options and the Jets could double dip in the draft but don't expect them to use either of their firsts on DE
that's actually brilliant...everyone else is fighting over a neophyte edge who hasn't produced squat in the NFL, and we steal a gem like Barnett, then add an overlooked position in the draft at DT; where we "mostly" have our pick of the litter.

Both Perrion Winfrey & Phidarian Mathis would be that fit, both have the size and length while capable run defenders to come in a rotate with JFM at DT... In case of injury to one of the two starters they have the makeup to spot start or rotate in with either spot while Marshall was a long shot he has shown flashes of contribution ability this past season should take the next step next year...
JFM should be moved back inside, beside Q.

everyone assumes Carl Lawson is going to be back next season, to me at the soonest he be back mid season
so FA signing to go along with Anae, Huff, Ward and possibly Rashed Jr. at both DE spots could also draft a day 3 developmental player/prospect...
Why the grim prognosis? Avg recovery time is 9 to 12 months from injury to returning to play. All reports were that he was making good progress and ahead of schedule.
