Have a curious thought, what if this happened?

We know a couple things now about Robert Saleh and his desires on specific players/prospects so what if this occurred, could it -- should it I mean it makes sense and would make us a contending team not just next year but for years to come... We know Saleh loves his safety converted into linebackers prospects what about current safety professionals, would he dare to take some of the best safeties and make them our new starting outside linebackers?

Justin Reid current free safety for the Houston Texans right now is 24 years and UFA, sign him to a 5 year deal to play the weak side linebacker role... He has the coverage ability to shut down tight ends, speed to stay with running backs and the quickness to handle speedy slot receivers... He stands at 6'1" roughly 207 lbs which is slightly under what both rookies we drafted and converted...

Next
Terrell Edmunds just turned 25 last month (January), strong safety for the Pittsburgh Steelers could also make the conversion to Rush linebacker in this defense... He has shown the ability to be physical at the point of attack against tight ends, running backs and shade slot receivers with quickness... He also stands at 6'1" slightly heavier than Reid at 217 lbs but these two safeties would be a major upgrade to what we have now...

Opens the door for the Jets to be aggressive at the safety position... Ashtyn Davis to me is that hybrid guy who has the range to play nickel corner which leaves former converted corner and claimed safety as the backups for these two free agent signings:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers clearly are going to be more focused on scrambling after the Tom Brady retirement then focused on actual players hitting free agency... We know this the Bucs tried to trade for Marcus Maye, low ball offer and Joe Douglas left that conversation then Maye got hurt... Jordan Whitehead another 24 going to be 25 year old strong safety should hit free agency and would be an ideal free agent signing... Just believe Maye will end up back with Todd Bowles in Tampa... So Whitehead should choose to play elsewhere with that in mind...

New Orleans Saints are in cap nightmare mode reason why HC Sean Payton stepped aside... Free Safety Marcus Williams I think could be convinced to sign with the Jets, stand alone reason is Robert Saleh and his reputation... Explain the idea of Reid and Edmunds to Williams who might be intrigued to step in knowing that three of his fellow safeties all are signing 5 year deals with a plan to take this defense and secondary to another level...

Basically starting Linebackers would be:
ROLB Terrell EdmundsILB CJ MosleyLOLB Justin Reid
ROLB Hamsah NasirildeenILB Quincy WilliamsLOLB Jamien Sherwood

Safety would look like this:
FS Marcus WilliamsSS Jordan Whitehead
FS Jason PinnockSS Elijah Riley
SB Ashtyn Davis

I know seems far fetched but this is how Saleh thinks and yes we could afford to make this happen would also gives us flexibility and a different style of attitude that teams have not seen before...

Thoughts???

The speed factor for the Jets defense in general takes a huge step forward, and magnifies the need for our DEs to set effective edges.

I agree but all that depends on a big time Pass Rush. Something this team does not have yet. Another caveat to throw in what happens if Saleh gets canned(hope not but with this Team its something to consider) and the new HC has a different philosophy? You know they will and it will be another complete rebuild. To quote Danny Glover from a certain movie franchise: "Im gettin too old for this shit."

If we did this then Karlaftis would be the best fit outside IMO .

All that means is we have too many safeties and hopefully we can get rid of some without talking too much of a cap hit

I like this. It is a fairly large investment in the safety corps, but it would be worth it. Rather than one huge splash, spending on two solid starters at FS and SS makes more sense. Plus both bring some experience, while still entering their prime.

keep Carl Lawson, Bryce Huff & Bradlee Anae
either sign a free agent coming off his rookie contract...
and can still draft not one but two additional DEs
have 6 Defensive Ends on the roster with 4 to 5 Defensive Tackles
Yes will have 8 safeties on the roster but 4 of them are linebackers, keep the two inside linebackers CJ & Quincy open to draft one more Muma?
Keep the 5 CBs technically now 6 with Davis back to DB role
Could be a workable scenario

My sense is that based on scheme, a DE will be drafted before a CB. And a CB would come before a S.

And I don't mind the philosophy of drafting some Strong Safeties and transitioning them to Will. As long as they are the right guys, it makes sense.

DE Arnold Ebiketie Penn State makes the most sense while still taking another DE like Isaiah Thomas Oklahoma
DT is also a must get Perrion Winfrey or Phidarian Mathis along with still getting a second like Haskell Garret Ohio State
ILB Chad Muma a well groomed replacement for CJ also an option this year
CB They like Damarri Mathis who can convert or play both CB & FS
For us right now having 8 safeties that can blanket in coverage while having ILB to help plug against the run with a formidable rotation on the DL would give Saleh & Ulbrich no excuses

on Offense it opens the door to still have
2 Quarterbacks
3 Running Backs
1 Full back
3 Tight Ends
6 receivers
8 offensive lineman

with a 16 man practice squad which also could be getting bigger with Covid the additions to roster fillers at OL, TE/WR, RB, even QB along with additional depth on defense...

Is Muma on the Jets' squad at the Senior Bowl? I do wonder about him being really impressive to be around, one of those guys who guys eats and sleeps football.

Saleh has been noted on 5 defensive prospects
Saleh & Joe Douglas are intrigued with 4 offensive lineman
Joe Douglas & Middleton in love with 3 tight ends

just saying there is a reason they picked these players to be on their squad was not a random drawing

It was such a great year for the Jets to get the Senior Bowl bid. All that draft capital, and a chance to work with a lot of these kids.

BTW, can we please get rid of the Pro Bowl and make THIS the big game on the weekend between the conference title games and the Super Bowl? I'd rather watch college kids playing hard to help their draft status than pros trying not to get hurt playing flag. Announce the All-Pro team at halftime, but make the Senior Bowl the centerpiece of this weekend.
