What if the Jets plans don't involve Q long term?

And no did not hear anything specific just spit balling here.

Let me explain, Quinnen made a business decision not to seek an extension this off season, okay no big deal he is signed for another year with a team option. BUT, is he hoping to get another pro bowl (alternate or 1st team) selection to boost his 5th year value to maximize his overall value to start negotiations from that $20 M base salary?

This coaching regime and GM Joe Douglas did not draft him, so technically they are not tied to his career. But anyone would be foolish not to include him into their base defensive core. Last year he was on a snap count not just him but the entire defensive line. In the middle of the season, knowing JFM would be a free agent after this season they gave him an extension (he is the type of player that fits Saleh's defense) to make sure he does NOT leave in free agency. Ok smart move I guess, might of paid a tad more than he is really worth.

The Jets in free agency this year and the draft could spell what the long term plans are.

The Jets will have to pick up Q's 5th year team option this off season, does not mean he is logged in as the future piece on the D Line but allows the team to hold his rights for a potential in season trade next year or after next season move him for draft capitol.

Now I am all for keeping Q, but the bigger picture is he a real fit and will we pay this man a considerable chunk contract for services for a role on the d line that could be a defensive line by committee type system?

Thoughts?

Thoughts in General...

"by committees" are such on a team, because not one person has stood out to force the coaches to play them until they drop.
this regime did not draft Q, but they are seeing adequate returns, but not great.

Thoughts on Money...

Q has to set himself apart from all other DT's on the NYJ's to log snap counts so he can be mentioned in convo's about the best DT's in the league, or even DPOTY in order for him to garner $20 million per season.

Thoughts on Draft Capital...

if we are going to be a perennial winner, get used to saying good bye to many of your faves... however, hopefully it's done in a manner that makes them want to come back after they cashed in somewhere else.

i truly believe that Q is the first of the building block players who will be playing elsewhere.
definitely a building block, but unless he becomes a Rock of Gibraltar "cornerstone" in 2022, get as much as you can in draft capital.

If he can put up Aaron Donald numbers then pay him Aaron Donald money. He can't so I don't know what they should do. He is averaging 5 sacks a year. If he puts up huge numbers I would be afraid its contract type numbers. I think he is a good, but definitely not a great DT. For $20M/year, he has to be way bigger disruption.

I hope we quickly become a team where players want to stay and are willing to give a home team discount to stay here. I hope that starts with Q
You can hope all you want but the reality will look much different

I hope this off-season, Q works on himself, comes into camp in incredible shape. Lose that last bit of “baby fat” and be a 6’ 3” 290 lbs of pure muscle.

Well he is 24 years old. At some point, you are just fat.

With Q our Defensive line is below average. Without Q our Defensive Line is way, way below average. You can sugar coated any way you want it about your favorite players on the "D" line. They are not that good. Until you add a Dominating piece or 2 to help Q you may never know what Q is really made of.

While I might agree, at what cost ? Q like Wilson and every other top 10 pick we’ve ever had are supposed to elevate those around him, not be average until better help shows up . If I’m going to pay hi , he needs to be a difference maker, not an alternate to a difference maker.

Quinnen should be the playmaker and consistent force, I don't even remember him being double teamed this season I could be wrong but I just don't recall...

If you are striving to be that guy, you will have opposing teams game planning for you specifically but when he was on the field he did okay wasn't always a force and base salary at $20 M I just don't see it...

They will accept his team option this off season but also opens the door for them to deal him, maybe not soon but before the start of the 2023 season (5th year), so basically he has til then to show up consistently...

JFM saw double teams and TE or RB chip him off the EDGE which slowed down but he still produced highly this year after his extension...

This!!! he has to have that "i have to be the one instinct" / "if i can't wreck the the offense nobody can". Donald, Strahan, Bruce Smith, Campbell all had/have it.

...and if he develops it, then management needs to be certain it's real and not just a contract year motivation.

even Damon Harrison had it and he was basically a two down player that pushed the pocket

lets get this right... right now if the Jets pick up Quinnen's 5th year it will no longer be for $10 it will be for $16 with his first pro bowl (alternate) selection... during next season (4th) if Q, gets nominated for the pro bowl (or alternate) his 5th team option will go to $20 M for the 5th year...

the idea of reaching 2 x to pro bowl is one thing but playing on the 5th year team option and continuing to produce albeit make alternate pro bowl selections will further his value or base negotiations... after next year his base negotiations will be $20 M but if they do not extend him then after his 5th year and gets a third his value will be base $25 at least...

I don't see this regime paying him to be a pro bowl alternate even tho in the books is still pro bowl...

I do see, come trade deadline next year if a team offers same compensation of Leo Williams draft capitol that Q could be dealt, just a feeling...

I love Quinnen Williams and would love to see him play within the interior while alongside of an elite Edge Rusher.

Imo our Front Office has failed QW in that regard. #3 overall pick of 2019 but yet 3 years later and we've yet to get this guy an elite outside edge pass rusher as his running mate? That's criminal.

With all of that said I always keep in mind that Quinnen Williams isn't a Joe Douglas draft pick and QW himself hasn't put up the type of production to warrant Franchise QB type of $$$ @ $20M+ per season.

So therefore I'd rather see him walk @ the end of the 2022 and just draft another 1st round DT next year (because 2023s DT draft class already looks to be fully loaded).

This organization really has failed our #3 picks recently.

if you are saying with production from this year then you are reaching
this team has specific dynamic with implementing scheme yet players that surround him
couldn't execute consistently to where he could reap the reward but also there were times that he should of won his assignment and didn't

I was speaking of a specific #3 pick that we failed. I won't mention his name.
