No, no...I know you're not arguing. It's a legitimate discussion.
Right now, I would say the Jets OL is fringe top 10 in the game. Could be better, but a far cry from where it was when JD got here. Maccagnan never put resources into the OL, and it showed. The line JD has built for this year, as is, is absolutely good enough for a good young QB with weapons to succeed, especially with a solid young RB in MC.
I would like to see the team improve the OL, but I don't see it as a desperate need. RT is still uncertain. I prefer Fant at LT. If Becton is healthy, who plays RT? It's a discussion worth having because Fant is FAR more capable at LT than he is at RT, but would the team play Becton at RT? I don't know.
As for C, I LOVE Linderbaum. But I'm not sold on the Jets drafting him right now, for a couple reasons. McGovern has been far better than some would suggest, and he has suffered from awful guard play - on both sides in his first year, on the right in his second. You draft Linderbaum, you are playing him immediately. I am much more comfortable with a line as young as the Jets would be if they had a veteran C, as opposed to a rookie. LT needs to be the best player, but C is the one making the line calls. With a young QB and a lot of youth on the OL, I would rather have McGovern for a little while longer, draft an interior guy who can play some G and C, fill in, and develop into a long-term solution at C.
If the Jets are making a move early in the draft for OL, I would much rather for an OT, and then make a corresponding move. If the franchise has soured on Becton, bring in a tackle who can play RT for a year with Fant at LT, and then slide over to LT once he has a year under his belt, and deal Becton. If the franchise is still solid on Becton, you could trade Fant while his value is high and draft a potential franchise RT.
Brady had time with the Pats, in part because of Dante, and in part because of his own quick release. He did not have that talent his entire time in NE, nor did he have it in TB. Wilson, if his release is quick enough, absolutely should be able to live up to his abilities with this line. If he needs a line better than this to avoid failing, then part of it is on him. This is a good - not great, but good, and fringe very good - OL.
