I am not denying the fact that we have a lot of holes to fill, but big splurges in FA typically don't equate to success on Sundays. I'd rather sign the tier 2 guys like Bulaga, Carpenter, Culliver, Moore or House to bridge the talent gap, sign your own and draft the rest. That's why I'm reserving judgment on the off-season until the summer.

That defense the Pats built through free agency looked pretty good last year. :) I think the Ravens (Dumerville) and Broncos (Talib, Ware, and Welker) got them where they wanted to go also. I think you need a solid blend of FA and draft...stronger draft than FA moves though.

of all the big name free agents signing elsewhere (and i don't count guys like jackson, mccourtey and cobb who re-upped with their existing teams), which ones were the jets reportedly interested in?

other than maxwell (who seemed destined to go to philly, and didn't even entertain offers from his old DC in atlanta), most of the high profile FAs being signed were never really jets targets (at least known targets). sure, franklin would have been nice, but i'm guessing many teams felt the same. he went to SD, where his former OC is the head coach.

seems there a lot of panic here over players we never really were looking at signing with other teams or staying with their existing teams.

patience is what you have when you dont want Revis, Maxwell, or Kareem jackson...those same people preaching patience want those guys, they just dont know better than to say "be patient." Most of them are old...just ask them. They likely still punch time clocks, wonder where phone booths are, and prefer fruit cups over tapioca pudding in the nursing home lunch line. You know who you are. :)

What sucks is...I am sure the Jets are trying to get a lot of guys signed up..but maybe guys just dont want to play for the Jets....at this point in time..so in all likelihood, they WILL HAVE TO OVERPAY FOR GUYS..but everyone has to remember when and if they do..not to bitch and complain they overpaid for a corner or whoever it may be...

With alot of big guys resigning with their old teams..I think this window is really a tool that HELPS the old teams that had the players since they can go and see what they can get elsewhere and bring it back toi their previous team for them to match or get close to at least

Big difference though in the teams you cite, and the Jets. Both Patriots and Denver had established foundations and only needed a couple of key pieces. What I was referring to was how other lower tier teams have done recently to break their respective losing trends. Teams like the Dolphins, Redskins, Eagles and last year's Giants team all spent big and got very little to show for their money.

I would say so far:

Maxwell CB
Jackson CB
Franklin OG
Flowers CB
McPhee OLB
McCourty S
Hughes OLB

I think these are all names tied to the Jets via need or scheme fit...you may not count them because within 48 hours of free agency beginning they resigned...but I think you discounting them isn't fair to project on others who were hopeful to add some of these names on Tuesday. Whether they resigned before or after free agency began, it's still disappointing we didn't add some of this talent, IMO.

Jeremy Maclin - WR - Eagles
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Jeremy Maclin's contract with the Chiefs will pay him in the vicinity of $11 million per year.
We can now understand why Chip Kelly let Maclin get away. While Maclin is a very nice receiver, paying him more than guys like Randall Cobb, Jordy Nelson and Antonio Brown is a monstrous stretch. It's also a stretch to think Alex Smith could make a wide receiver worth paying $11 million. The Eagles were reportedly offering Maclin $9 million per year.

It took more to get him to play in that situation...and Ried knows him. No brainer, more money and you know the offense.

Bears to sign Pernell McPhee, $16 million guaranteed

The Bears are making an expensive addition to their pass rush.

Pernell McPhee, who emerged as a very good situational pass rusher last season in Baltimore, will sign a new contract to play in Chicago. The Baltimore Sun reports that it’s a five-year contract worth nearly $40 million, including nearly $16 million guaranteed. That’s less than the $8 million to $10 million a year that McPhee was reportedly seeking, but it’s still a good deal for a guy who is not an every-down player.

The 26-year-old McPhee had 7.5 sacks last year while playing mostly in passing situations. He’ll surely help Chicago’s pass rush this year, but he’ll need to improve against the run if he’s going to be worth the money the Bears are paying him.

McPhee was the No. 15 player in our Free Agent Hot 100.

Another example of a guy not breaking the bank as some assumed and going to a crappy team to boot. That was his market value topped out at 8M. That for one of the few guys who recorded a bunch of sacks.

I know some people really like Fitzpatrick...but I really like Bill Obrien, and I trust his QB evaluation (maybe more than anyone)...and he picked Hoyer and Mallet over Fitzpatrick. Doesnt leave me feeling warm and fuzzy.

At this point..it seems like it is either him or Matt Moore.....FOLES trade looking better and better..

The Jets should turn their attention to Jake Locker. The kid can play, he's just been snakebit with injuries. Couple of years ago he tore Rex Ryan's defense a new ass.

Which means Geno in 2015 if we dont get Foles or Bradford. I dont think Moore can beta out Geno and I thought it was 50-50 Mallet or Hoyer could anyway. I think the Jets are better off looking at Foles, Bradford, and mariota anyway than Hoyer, Fitzpatrick, and mallet.

Cy has been banging that drum...im not sold on his accuracy or long term potential...but I cant say he is any worse than Fitzpatrick, Hoyer, or Mallet than why not?

Couldn't agree more. Locker has potential and he has shown growth and improvement. Just keeps getting injured. If he can stay healthy, you never know what he could become. Certainly worth a shot and I would prefer him over Geno while we groom Mariota or Petty, who I hope we pick in the draft.

#Jets look elsewhere now RT @RapSheet: #Texans have agreed to terms w/ QB Ryan Mallett, source said. So it’ll be Hoyer & Mallett in Houston 9m

I think he's more talented than Fitz, Hoyer or Mallet, but he has major durability issues, a lot like Sam Bradford, though he's not at Bradford's level. On the plus side he's still a young player (26), so its not out of the question that he can start having better luck with injuries. I'm not saying he's a franchise QB, but IMO he's good enough to challenge Geno if he stays healthy, and at worse we have a real quality backup. He also won't cost too much, so it doesn't preclude us from drafting Mariota if he falls to 6 and we want him. As for his accuracy, he hasn't played a lot of pro football and he was still a developing player. I think that would have naturally improved with reps and games if the injuries didn't rob him of so much of that. Was he a reach at #8 overall in 2011, absolutely, but was he a late 1/early 2 value, IMO he was. At this point he's a no brainer for the Jets in my view. I don't see anyone else out there who has his ceiling.

Agree on Locker 100%.

I watched him demolish the vaunted Rex D in 2013 (until he got hurt)

and again last season. (Got hurt again)

If he is healthy, he's the guy unless Chipper trades us Foles and picks for the six, as reported
