Did Jets Out Perform Expectations?

Heading into this season the floor was 6 wins, with the shelf being 11 to 12 wins. We had a good stretch where we out performed expectations early but had a rough patch and the offensive side of the ball showed how inadequate the Offensive Line and Quarterback Play really is. From last year to this year our defense took a huge leap even our special teams continue to be special. In the end the inefficiencies appeared loud and clear. Our OL needs to be priority to finish the rebuild. We may be stuck with Laken but he is not the only issue on the OL.

Who is our left tackle?
Will Max Mitchell be able to play ever again?
Will Mekhi Becton lose the fucking weight and be the dominate player we drafted him to be?
Who will be our center moving forward.
What position will AVT play moving forward?
Can they retain Nate Herbig?

Our backfield is set well at least three of them are locked in rookie contracts.

Do we carry a fourth and do we re-sign Ty Johnson?
Is our fullback here next year or do we use that position for another weapon?

Who the fuck is our quarterback?

Answer these questions then we know what to expect next year because the defense is ready to be dominate year in year out.

I expected us to compete and win 11 but with injuries and lack of depth also stated we could end up 6 or 7 wins. There is talent no doubt but never backed ZW as the starter just bcuz his hero mentality and bcuz of him the team buckled.

Just because you have reached pre-season expectations early doesn't mean you can mail it in for the rest of the season. The platform was there to break the postseason drought with very modest results in the second half of the season, and they blew it.

Our QB for next year is not on the roster. I like Ty Johnson and there is no guarantee that Breece won't turn into our Gale Sayers. Get rid of James 'One Wheel On My Wagon' Robinson. All other things being equal, our #1 pick should be LT, which is why it is important not to scupper our draft position on Sunday. Don't see why Mitchell can't recover or why Herbig can't be kept, we can move AVT back to LG and let Tomlinson count his $$$$ on the bench. I have no faith in Becton returning for any length of time.

The defense could do with a big run-stuffer in the middle and faster LBs, but there is no point worrying about defense until you have an offense that can score.

I for one (providing a win sunday) was satisfied overall. Team talent got significantly better. I never expected to be a playoff team in August. I was looking for 5 things this year
1 Improved talent ( which we got)
2 Improved Zach Wilson ( which we did not get )
3 Able to play competitive football ( which we did.... only 3 losses were double digits)
4 Growth from the coaching staff (jury out on that regarding LaFluer, but I think Saleh was ok for the most part)
5 Improved D ( massive improvement)

To answer above questions:
1 LT is not on the roster right now
2 Mitchell will play next season
3 Becton will be the RT next year. whether he can hold up.....???????
4 Center will be Herbig
5 AVT will move back to RG ( they will keep Tomlinson another year)
6 Backfield will be Breece, Bam and Johnson. I think Carter will be traded (basically phased out the last 2 games)
7 Fullback....... dont think they will use one

Free Agency: If we break the bank for a player or players. Get a young STUD!!! (FS, OLB, WR or QB). The DRAFT: (Rd #1: LEFT TACKLE!!), (Rd #2: RIGHT TACKLE, CENTER, OR RT GUARD). Quit playing around. The Offensive line is our # 2 problem. IMHO I would prefer a Center.

It’s amazing to me how this team offensively was on the cusp of doing something then lost the one guy who was leading the charge for the season and the fans can’t get over it . Shortly after that the team lost again for the season the guy who’s arguably the best player on offense in AVT but yet no understanding.
We got cheated, we got fooled yet again. This team was 5-2 before RB Hall got hurt despite the awful play at QB. . It was so bad that when Mike White started moving the ball we became overly excited.
Imagine if White had the ability to play with Hall and AVT and a half decent OL . That’s what Zack Wilson had for a few weeks and he made the most of it even playing the way he did .

It’s the NFL, and at that level you need talent to win . It’s why Joe Douglas has done what he has done the last 2 years . Trading up for AVT. Drafting Garrett Wilson and trading up for Breece Hall . It was working but they got hurt and it all fell apart. Nobody’s fault, just bad luck.

No need to chop anyone’s head off. The Jets know that the plan works, they just have to continue building like they have .

The Jets have had 50 years of bad luck. Something always happens to screw them. Aka Vinny going down untouched week 1 in the year we would have won the Super Bowl. For whatever reason, this is how things go for the Jets. No matter who’s fault, people are going to bitch about it

on the other hand, some teams have great luck. Cheatahs played in the shitty afc east for 20 years with 6 sure wins every year. They almost always played Peyton Manning, the only challenge in the afc during their run, at home in the snow. Brady was lucky enough to have the tuck rule call, regularly get bogus roughing and p.I. Penalties for 25 years and counting. He bailed to the Nfc as the afc was becoming dominant and the nfc was heading down hill. Look at this season. His only competition are the Vikings, 9ers and Eagles. Vikings are ending the season on a downward streak. The 9ers are on their 3rd qb, and the Eagles have just lost their qb. When Brady goes to the Super Bowl, no one but me will say it was because of good luck. They’ll call him the goat even though he has been the luckiest bastard in sports for almost half my life

lucky teams don’t get frowned on because they had good luck. They get applauded for winning. Same goes for bad luck. The Jets have had bad luck for 50 years and pretty much have sucked for 50 years. Bad luck or not, they are looked at as losers because they lose.
it appeared we were on the right track this year. We ended the season on a 1-7 spree. Blame it on bad luck if you want. I’ll just call it what it was. Bad

I was sure they would win 10 or more, and in my defense, they should have. They lost games they had in the bag. I've been blamining the offense for the losses, players, not Lefleur, and I feel that I was 100% correct. Lefleur made some rookie mistakes, he's a rookie, but not that many. You have no choice except to keep calling pass plays when your run plays keep getting negative yards. That's the result of poor player execution. JD's not blind. He watched this transpire. He will address it. The QB position is going to be both critical and tough to fix. Next season will be better. Overall, I'm excited where this team is going.

I thought 8 wins would be a huge accomplishment this year. Next year was the time table for actually "coming of age" so to speak. What can I say the Jets had a truly Jetsy type season. Ups and downs, key injuries, and many mistakes. One thing I can truly say is that they know Zach is not ready to take over now or the immediate future. Hard to say much else until We see who is available or becomes available. Just once I would love to win something during the Season. Tired of winning the Offseason.

I have never settled for the 'meaningful games in December mantra and I'm not about to now. It's ridiculous to look at this team and say that management was completely successful and no improvements need to be made. My grading so far:

Lafleur D

These grades are not for the 2022 season but for the tenure.
Some of Joe Douglas's mistakes: 2020 draft....trading up for Jeremiah Johnson. Not getting another qb in preseason.

Just imagine before the season the vast majority of this fan base wanted Jeff Ullbrick fired . One draft and a few decent players later he gets a grade -A for his tenure as defensive coordinator.
Give LaFleur a halfway decent QB and his tenure just might improve also .

I remember when the Jets coached the Senior Bowl and their QB coach was the OC for the game . Nobody was saying how inexperienced he was back then.

The final meal is only as good as the ingredients you give the chef . A rotten tomato is simply a rotten tomato, not a bad chef .
