So the contract situation doesn't look favorable

"Any money a team pays a player must be accounted for against the salary cap. If there is dead money in a player's contract and he is released or retires, that charge will accelerate onto the team's salary cap for the current year."
So we get screwed?

How does the release or retirement of a player affect the Salary Cap?

When a player is released (or retires), the team is relieved of having the pay the player’s base salary (P5) and any Roster Bonus that may become due after that, but still will need to account for any Signing or Option Bonus prorations that haven’t yet counted against the Salary Cap.

Using the contract example above, if the player was released in year 4 of the deal, the team would not have to pay that Roster Bonus or the player’s base salary (P5) of $7M (or any base salaries thereafter). However, the year 4 Bonus pro-rations ($2M + $1M) would still count and the year 5 Bonus prorations ($2M + $1M) would accelerate and immediately count against the Cap in year 4. So, the team would still have to account for $6M of the player’s remaining Bonus prorations. Since he was expected to count $10M against the Cap had he been on the team (his Cap number), the team would realize a Cap savings of $4M due to his release and have to carry $6M in “dead money” against the Salary Cap in year 4.

Since the prorations from year 5 accelerated against the Cap, there will be no future Cap implications from the release.

The retirement of a player is treated the same as the release of a player.

Even though I don't hope something bad happened, but I sure hope he didn't just retire this late because he didn't want get cut. If he knew this before this very moment then that really put the Jets who overpaid him in a slight bind.

I'm not sure but he's been taking a ton of personal time. Maybe something is going on in his personal life and he just decided it was time to walk away and focus on that. Who knows.

Honestly, we could have signed DeAndre Hopkins with his contract money.

For sure, D-Hop was there for the taking. Most likely, JD was concentrating on his second bowl of Pho instead of signing Hopkins.

We gain $10.5 million. Sounds favorable to me

Team was aware he was contemplating retiring. He wasn't in any danger of getting cut. That's why they were allowing him so much time to decide. Think the combonation of his injuries and his brothers premature death from cancer steered his priorities to his health and his children.

Maybe he retired because Cobb said Rodgers wouldn't throw the ball to WR's that fuck up. Well, Davis had plenty of drops.

Considering Davis was WR 2 , were likely going to be looking to add a receiver. Unless one of the 2 young guys really impress vs the Giants.

At the end of the day, if Corey Davis was going to have a large role with this team then we were already in trouble. Hopefully JD can pull off a trade. Or I guess they could sign Sammy Watkins for a body. He played for GB for part of a season. Or maybe they don't do anything and just carry more TE's which could easily replace CD's production.

Him or Landry. The list of available WRs is pretty
short.
Will have to get Green Bay to sign off on us using our second round pick if we're going to trade for a WR

Between the WR’s already in house, our talented TE room and our pass catching backs, IMO we do not need to add anything. Davis’s experience and leadership is a loss but between Cobb and Rogers I think that can be compensated for.
Good luck Cory. Thanks for everything. Congrats on your great career and the beginning of the next stage of your life. 🙏
