@LRJets All this talk about Hawkins had me reading a bit on him online. Actually forgot that I had read this book back in high school.

It is still the second best sports I ever read. When I think of when his mother left him a note saying there was fruit in the fridge and he found one peach, I still cry. Of course, the best sports book was Dave Anderson's book about SB III.

Thank goodness it's over and the rumor of Quinnen Williams for Henderson, Flynn, Norman and Zachary is untrue

Do young people still read sports books? Are they even written any more? Like so many here, I grew up with a bunch of sports nuts. Anything to get our hands on books or magazine articles written about our sports idols or figures in the sports world. I'd get chastised by my parents (and nuns) about always handing in book reports about sports figures.

TSN, Sport magazine, autobiographies actually written by Dick Schaap ... (sigh)

Especially The Sporting News. Minor league stats by the week ! Following the great International strikeout leader race of 1966 (Seaver vs Phoebus).

All the nicey nicey of pre-Ball Four sports literature

The best thing ever put in print, however, were those football rosters (#,name, pos) in the Times. Anyone else just cut those out for watching the game (or listening to home games)?

Still gotta admit that BaseballReference.com (et al.) beats it all. Good thing they didn't have that around when I was a kid

The nuns did not want you to get into their habits.....but nowadays it is ok for guys to do that,

Sporting News was my bible. Schaap was a god (note small g). Lupica, too. Too complex and in depth for most casual sports fans. Remember Strat-O-Matic? What would this generation think of us throwing dice and looking at those cards? lol Doing averages and organizing "leagues" with fellow sports nerds?

Did you notice on the 34 Cards Rip Collins was a 1B-3 & on the best teams a 1b-2 for the same 34 Cards. I would push for all the Cardinals to be rated higher all the time on my many visits there. We formed football leagues & one year i Took the cowboys & cleaned up

I had APBA and my friend had Strat-O-Matic. We'd play full seasons and keep stats in notebooks. Mets seemed to win all the championships though. Only the baseball games were really good. Had APBA football and golf too and both were meh.

Modern, waaaaay less work fun can be had in the computer version of SOM. A true guilty pleasure.

Andy MacPhail got us into strat-o-matic. I keep telling him I taught him everything he knows. I crushed him with the 69 chiefs against his Vikings. Lots of funs we even built stadiums in our basement.
Did you ever have a no hitter?...we did not. No four HR games too. Those 67 Cardinals were a fun team to play with. A friend in college spent a night with a girl who vomited in his bag of teams.....he was not happy about that one.

Per ESPN, Joe Douglas made a great move. he was offered a 7th for RB Cook and a 6th for DE Lawson. Trader Joe stuck to his guns and wanted a 6th for Cook and a 5th for Lawson. Ended up getting NOTHING for neither. Great move Joe. Next year they will be free agents. We did get another OVER the HILL Offensive lineman. Something Joe is very good at.

Not much on the open market so I don't have a huge problem with grabbing Saffold for no draft capital. I just feel bad for the guy. I hope his future injury isn't too bad.

Lawson wouldn't bother me, but if Breece goes down then I would rather have Cook. Getting rid of depth for low round picks seems stupid. We can't keep anyone healthy so we need depth.
