Jets sign Rodger Saffold to the PS. The plan is to move him to the active roster.
About as much as we could have hoped for. If he is better than what we have he'll make his way to the starting lineup, if not he'll be another body to fill the holes left by our next injuries. Meanwhile Dennis Kelly has been promoted to the active roster, presumably better than our other PS players.

You and the Prof should see the documentary, "Undefeated,The Roger Brown Story".
How'd I miss this documentary? It's on YouTube, so I will definitely check it out. I remember Brown from his all star days in the ABA. Thanks for the recommendation, LRJ.

It is still the second best sports I ever read. When I think of when his mother left him a note saying there was fruit in the fridge and he found one peach, I still cry. Of course, the best sports book was Dave Anderson's book about SB III.

They recently named a city park after Connie on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn.
Connie Hawkins Park.

A friend who went to high school with me lived 3 walk ups from Roger Brown. My friend went to my h.s., Tilden, Brown went to Wingate. I keep teasing him to this day, "Why couldn't you and Roger have switched addresses?"

Sporting News was my bible. Schaap was a god (note small g). Lupica, too. Too complex and in depth for most casual sports fans. Remember Strat-O-Matic? What would this generation think of us throwing dice and looking at those cards? lol Doing averages and organizing "leagues" with fellow sports nerds?
Don't forget waiting for the Baseball Digest annual rookie reports and roster issues, then keeping the roster updated when you read about trades. Lupica still writes very successful sports-related books for kids.

I loved for football and basketball (separate issues) Street & Smith.
Familiar?

Baseball Digest! Wow, you brought back memories. Look at Killebrew's swing on this cover from 1970.

Offensive lineman Ezra Cleveland was traded from the Vikings to the Jags. He is a Solid OL. I guess Joe D. was taking his nap when the Vikings were offering Clevland to all the NFL teams.

Just finished watching this wonderful documentary. What a travesty Brown (and Hawkins) had to endure. Those NYC detectives coerced a "confession" for something neither guy did. Just to snag Molinas. And not a lawyer, family member, or adult around Brown and the rest as they endured days of interrogation. Just sad.

I was too young to remember the game in 1960 between Brown and Hawkins at the old Garden. But that had to be an incredible battle.

Loved seeing the guys from the ABA Pacers and recalled the finals between them and Rick Barry's Nets. Brown was just on another level. Awesome that in a big spot, the Pacers isolated Brown on one side of the court and let him do his magic. What a friggin shooter.

Poem by Slick Leonard, which he read at Brown's funeral, is emotional and beautiful. Fitting that Brown's funeral was actually held at Market Square.

Thanks for recommending the documentary, LRL.

If we hadn't been knocked out by (I think) Commerce, my Bayside High team would have faced Brown in the semis. It had Kenny McIntyre (later St. Johns), Jim Chestnut (Michigan) and Paul Goldberger, who led the DIV II in scoring at an L.I. College (forget which one) Paul broke his hand and played the game shooting with his off hand and still scored 30+ points.

Kenny McIntyre. I remember him. I got his autograph while sitting in the stands watching a St Johns baseball game.

Signing Glaser directly to our active squad seems a bit of a desperation move, as if they know that Tippmann will be unavailable and Saffold not fully fit for Monday, and we need warm bodies to fill the holes.
