The poison of this board is around the stupidity of this thread. Even if you were rooting for Pennington to beat out Kellen Clemens, the idea Clemens would immediately get cut if he lost is very short sighted And unrealistic. I think too many on this board is snorting the coke Dan is selling on the Petty thread and the after effects is this vomit of a thread.

+100 What the F does the possibility of GEno, unrealistically being cut, merit a thread..its DUMB, STUPID, MINDLESS..and not working towards a good quality board.....

Compared with Smith's two completely crappy years in the NFL, Ryan Fitzpatrick's failure that you have mentioned in every one of your love paeans to Smith are Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Dan Marino like.

But then again, the 90 percent of Jet fans who are not blindly in love with your West Virginia manlove are all haters, bashers and bigots.

No ONE is in LOVE with GENO...we are realistic. AND HAS SHOWN SOME ABILITY...PHYSICAL ABILITY, WHICH HE HAS SHOWN, IS GOD GIVEN....MENTAL MISTAKES CAN BE WORKED WITH AND TAUGHT AND IMPROVED ON...and if ANYONE WANTS TO CUT GENO...AND HAND THE KEYS TO fitz OR petty....WITHOUT A LEGIT qb COMPETITION IS BRAIN DEAD...Geno will be part of the competition and if he does bad..so be it..if he does well so be it.....and for the mindless idiots that think he is automatically going to fail..well I doubt seriously your football acumen...

my opinion..just like the premise of thread

I can't believe I'm doing this but I'm going to fall for it anyway and respond to this. No, they should start a failed 10-plus year vet in Fitz that has been bounced from team to team no matter how he plays for them. Or wait, let them start the 4th round draft project in Petty who is no more ready then Geno was when he came out. Better yet, start a career back-up in Simms, who couldn't even beat out Geno his first two years here. Yeah thats the ticket!

Last great idea, let them start this other guy (I don't know his damn name) and then they can really cut Geno. Yeah, all these ideas are better then letting Geno fight in a true competition this camp and win the job fair and square to start the season as the starter. I just figured it out, all you Geno haters know Geno will win the job fair and square (whether Fitz was fully healthy or not, Geno still would/will win it) and you guys just can't stand it. Well deal with it fellas, cause it is what it is!

ABSOLUTELY

and the funny thing is..our "experts" on the board will question the decision if Geno does in fact win an open competion in camp..they will say "the coaches are losers" the front office sucks" and will ac tiually think they are smarter than the our new regime..

LET IT PLAY OUT ONE WAY OR ANOTHER

I have no idea what you are shouting about.
I wasn't even referring to anything you posted or, to my knowledge, ever have.

And I have no problem with a competition

I don't appreciate being called names and insults and especially being inferred to be a racist by one particular poster just because I believe based on two horribly long awful seasons that Smith stinks and will win a fair competition with Fitzpatrick when pigs fly

No, I'm not calling you a racist. I'm calling you a real SMART GUY for wanting a 10-plus year bounce around reject QB to lead this team. I'm calling you a genius for wanting a QB that no one wants to lead their team but you want him to lead ours. When we have a young 3rd-year QB that can possibly be pretty good with a much better roster and better coaching and management, if we just gave him a chance. You may call me what you want and (trust me, I could care less) but I'm not calling you a racist:smiley-angry021:.

is that a promise or a threat? :)

seems this thread was really just another excuse to bash geno. the OP has seemed to disappear from this thread and never answered my questions of whether he really thinks it is likely that geno is cut after week 3. since the premise is more or less nonsensical (although i'd be happy to hear the OP's rationale to the contrary), it shouldn't be surprising that the thread has not promoted the most intelligent level of discourse.

It amazes me that some here think that Fitz is going to be the QB savior for this team; that he is head and shoulders above Geno or anyone else on the roster. If that was the case, why did the Texans - who surely don't seem to have a franchise QB on their roster, trade him - and for what, a late round draft pick? I'm sorry but I don't see him as being any great shakes.

According to ESPN, over the last 2 years, Fitz has been ranked statistically below Geno (although I would rate it as a push with Fitz slightly ahead on a couple of key stats). But, shouldn't there be more separation between a ten year vet from a 2 year vet?

Oh, wait, Fitz will be great again because he will be reunited with Gailey, with whom he had so much success with in Buffalo - for what, half a season before coming back to earth? If Gailey is the QB guru he is purported to be, why is it so hard for some on this board to fathom that he can help Smith? Remember who the O coordinator and QB coaches were for his 2 years here. He seemed to get little or no support from them, no real guidance and no instruction. Heck, the OC wouldn't even listen or ascribe to the philosophy of his own HC. It was ‘damn the torpedoes and straight ahead’. ‘Fire at will’. There was not even the illusion of an attempt ever having been made by MM to accentuate Geno's strengths and minimize and/or work on the things he struggled with. I don't expect that to be the case with Gailey.

Now I’m not saying that Smith should be handed the starting job, he hasn’t earned it yet – and neither has Fitz for that matter. But, if Gailey can maximize his talents and teach him correctly, IMO, Smith will be the starter and he could be a top 20 QB in 2015. The turnovers and sacks will decrease and the passing % and TD’s will increase. I believe that finally having an OC who seems to be a legitimate QB teacher and an HC who will be part of his development will help him improve significantly.

And you know what? If he doesn’t tap his potential and doesn’t get the starters job, then he didn’t deserve it and the team will be led by a better player. Nothing wrong with that from what I can see. Either way it’s a win-win for the team. To me, the difference is that the Geno haters on this board couldn’t stomach the sight of him succeeding as our QB. It seems to be too personal. For me, I frankly don’t care who is under center it is, along as he is the best man for the job. Can you Geno haters honestly say that?

Note: I wrote this and posted without seeing some later posts, so parts of this may be seen as repeating things that have already been said - my apologies as it was not my intention.

Yes, I can honestly say that.

Geno has shown me NOTHING to believe he's the future of this team, so I choose to not believe it.

You do realize Morningwheg led some pretty decent offenses, right? And that Gailey has been unemployed for two years, right? Yet I'm supposed to believe "this is what Geno was missing".

You do realize Fitzpatrick has a better record, better completion percentage, better YPG average, more touchdowns, less TOs, and better QBR than Geno the past two years, right? Yet I'm supposed to believe "Geno brings more to the table".

Trust me bud -- I WANT TO BELIEVE. I WANT to know our future is secure behind center. I WANT to believe the issue has simply been lack of talent, or poor coaching, or raw skills, or full moons, or time zone changes -- ANYTHING but the thought that he flat out is not a starting-caliber NFL QB. Problem is, my eyes tell me otherwise, and no internet message board is going to change my mind -- only results on the field, which aren't possible for 4 more months.

So until then, I choose to not believe. Not because I'm a Geno-hater, and not because "I want to be right", but simply because I've watched football for 3+ decades and know history is not on his side.

Will I root for him? Sure -- but not the way some of you are. I won't blindly wave his pom-poms, willfully choosing to ignore what's right in front of my face. I HATE that Fitz appears to be our best option -- HATE IT!!!!! But it is what it is, and while you sit there assuming Geno is going to undergo some miraculous transformation, I'll be sitting here hoping Petty is brought along WAY better than our past two prospects have been . . .

i'm all in favor of having an open competition and letting the best man win. but i'm not sure how you can say that fitz has been ranked statistically below geno the last 2 years

geno (2013) - 16 games, 55.8% completion %, 12 TDs, 21 Ints, 66.5 QB rating
geno (2014) - 13 games, 59.7% completion %, 13 TDs, 13 Ints, 77.5 QB rating

fitz (2013 w/ Tenn) - 11 games, 62% completion %, 14 TDs, 12 Ints, 82 QB rating
fitz (2014 w/ Hou) - 12 games, 63.1% comp %, 17 TDs, 8 Ints, 95.3 QB rating
