Those must have been the "couple of stats that Fitzpatrick was slightly ahead in" 54

Ok OCCH. And I’m glad that you “can honestly say that”. But can you also honestly say that:
• MM “led a pretty decent offense” these last 2 years?
• There were games over those 2 years that had you screaming at the TV at HIM and not Geno?
• There weren’t games where you felt, ‘hey, maybe this kid does have it’? That’s the potential some of us have mentioned that we believe has not been tapped yet.
• You wouldn’t you expect a difference in stats in comparing a 2 yr. pro to a 10 yr. pro? Which BTW was my point. I wasn’t saying they were equal, I was pointing out that there is not as much statistical difference between the 2 as one might expect, especially after reading such glowing reviews on Fitz that some have posted.

And although I never said that “Geno brings more to the table” than Fitz, I believe he has the potential to be better than Fitz.

And I’m the same as you in that “no internet message board is going to change my mind” either. I too, will judge by what I see on the field. Which is all any of us should do.

The “poms poms” I ‘blindly’ wave are for the team, not just one player. Would I love to see Geno succeed? Of course! Everyone, well almost everyone, likes to see a successful reclamation project. It gives hope and provides positive reinforcement for the concept of never giving up.

It’s okay to view Geno with a skeptical eye. I do, as I believe, all of the so-called "Geno lovers" here do as well, because he’s earned that. But there are some who will never be able to view him with anything but pure hatred and that I just don’t get and never will.

And I have been watching football for over 4 decades. Yes, history is not on his side, but there are always exceptions to the rule. Besides, history has also shown us that very few QBs’ are very successful in their first couple of years.

So as long as he’s on the team, shouldn’t we all keep rooting for him? Isn’t that what a fan does? Root for the team and therefore, by extension and necessity, root for the players?

It amazes me that some here think that Fitz is going to be the QB savior for this team; that he is head and shoulders above Geno or anyone else on the roster. If that was the case, why did the Texans - who surely don't seem to have a franchise QB on their roster, trade him - and for what, a late round draft pick? I'm sorry but I don't see him as being any great shakes.

According to ESPN, over the last 2 years, Fitz has been ranked statistically below Geno (although I would rate it as a push with Fitz slightly ahead on a couple of key stats). But, shouldn't there be more separation between a ten year vet from a 2 year vet?

Oh, wait, Fitz will be great again because he will be reunited with Gailey, with whom he had so much success with in Buffalo - for what, half a season before coming back to earth? If Gailey is the QB guru he is purported to be, why is it so hard for some on this board to fathom that he can help Smith? Remember who the O coordinator and QB coaches were for his 2 years here. He seemed to get little or no support from them, no real guidance and no instruction. Heck, the OC wouldn't even listen or ascribe to the philosophy of his own HC. It was ‘damn the torpedoes and straight ahead’. ‘Fire at will’. There was not even the illusion of an attempt ever having been made by MM to accentuate Geno's strengths and minimize and/or work on the things he struggled with. I don't expect that to be the case with Gailey.

Now I’m not saying that Smith should be handed the starting job, he hasn’t earned it yet – and neither has Fitz for that matter. But, if Gailey can maximize his talents and teach him correctly, IMO, Smith will be the starter and he could be a top 20 QB in 2015. The turnovers and sacks will decrease and the passing % and TD’s will increase. I believe that finally having an OC who seems to be a legitimate QB teacher and an HC who will be part of his development will help him improve significantly.

And you know what? If he doesn’t tap his potential and doesn’t get the starters job, then he didn’t deserve it and the team will be led by a better player. Nothing wrong with that from what I can see. Either way it’s a win-win for the team. To me, the difference is that the Geno haters on this board couldn’t stomach the sight of him succeeding as our QB. It seems to be too personal. For me, I frankly don’t care who is under center it is, along as he is the best man for the job. Can you Geno haters honestly say that?

Note: I wrote this and posted without seeing some later posts, so parts of this may be seen as repeating things that have already been said - my apologies as it was not my intention.

This is a great post regardless of QB preference, IMO. Why ant we get beat writers this good?

I'm honestly not going to read all the QB hell back and forth. Another useless thread and ugly QB debate.

Let me start out by saying this so it is clear where I am coming from. I have never been very high on Geno. I have never rooted against him and I would be thrilled if I was wrong and he was our QB of the future.

I do not believe Fits is a savior. what I believe is he is a vet who has a good track record with our OC and has the necessary tools to do well here.

IMO a best case scenario for Geno is to play at a level Fitzs already does. So if Smith beats him out great. Lets go Geno. If I had to put money on it I would put my money on Fitz. He already plays at that level and is a surer thing in my book.

That's as realistic as the subject of this thread...

We should start another thread about next year's starting QB for the Jets...Aaron Rodgers. It would be just as pointless a discussion.

people have questions and they may seem stupid to some people but that is what a forum is.

ridiculing other peoples questions is not the way.....just don't answer

Hahaha, exactly. But we're idiots because others know deep down inside their hearts that geno is super duper.

You can't just assume geno will be better this year than last, then insult somebody who disagrees.
Statistically ESPN sucks.
Let's compare geno and fitz based on performance last year, or you know the most recent pro football both have played.
Geno=worst in football
Fitz=middle of the pack
Beyond that, is just opinion and assumption of production.

You say a10 year vet should be better then a2 year vet, I say, he was!
You say geno should improve every year? Well why wouldn't a10 year vet improve? It's not like fitz is in Tebow land, he's not even in Sanchez land, he's getting starter jobs consistently. This broken leg is a big deal, let's see when he's 100%
He knows the system, knows the coach, has performed better than geno. All that's left is assumed potential based on meaningless end of season games.

it comes down to this

geno has the tools but doesn't seem to grasp the mental part of the game

if gailey can simplify it enough for smith i believe he could start, but how dumb down would it have to be if we are talking red, yellow, and green then I would assume given fitz's leadership abilities the fact he knows the verbiage for the most part or at least the plays that he would favor fitz.

unless geno can show he can pick up gailey's offense fairly quickly I just think gailey would feel safer having fitzpatrick holding the fort and teaching bryce then geno doing it.

One thing geno no matter if he picks up the offense or not is a franchise qb or will he ever be one he just doesn't have the brains.

Geno couldn't have come into a worse situation his first two seasons. The coaching/leadership were going down hill, already proven they couldn't develop a QB. The GM and coach didn't get along and the receiver talent was among the worse in the league. Geno could improve with much better talent around him and strong chemistry between coach and GM.

Geno's not getting cut. The Jets would have had to do a lot better than Fitz off a busted leg and 4th round Petty I'd they to even leave themselves that option.

If Geno busted out this year, we're looking for a starter next year. Petty, who came out much less touted than Geno yet with all the warts of the system he played in, most likely won't be ready. Gil Brandt said it best a couple of weeks ago on NFL Radio about Petty: I like the kid, but Geno's just a much more talented quarterback coming out of college, is what he is...

Most Jet fans have no faith left in Geno starting as QB, I am included in that group. However I do agree that Geno had no talent around him in years 1 and 2. Now in year 3 he has a chance to change our opinions of him. He has a talented cast around him. No excuses. I hear him and Brandon Marshall are living together, he needs to move Decker,Kerley and Amaro in too!

Hey, if you want a garbage board about what happens if Geno laces them up and plays from the back of a fire truck on game day, have at it. Every thread being the exact same topic should be moderated and managed better than this. I'm just calling this recent shit storm this board has become what it is...a poorly managed shit storm.

Tomorrow, enjoy the two new threadsabout Geno vs Fitz.

Just can't wait until the season starts. Training camp and preseason will include more of these dumb debates.

JMO but PMs are a better place to discuss likes and dislikes about the running of the forum than on the board itself

There are those who are being optimistic about Geno this season and there are those bombarding the board with things that happened with Geno in Rex's last two disastrous years..3 years, but Geno wasn't here when it started going south on Rex. All for nothing because it's Geno's job to lose.

I disagree. Those activities will provide outcomes. We will all read camp reports and see what we need to see in the preseason. I'm in the camp I hope Geno improves but let the best man win. I don't care who wins as long as we win. But it's in our best interest for the younger QB to succeed.

Ironically, Geno is only 7 months older than Petty with 2 more years of experience in the NFL. We should be rooting for one of the young guys to emerge so we can build around them in next year's QB heavy draft and hope a young stud oline man falls in our lap...but if we go with Father Time and make a playoff run like HYATT predicted, let's do it and see where we land.
