Any chance Bryce Petty can become the next Aaron Rodgers?

Yes Jets faithful I know I'm reaching here and reaching HUGE but did you guys see Aaron Rodgers carve up the Chiefs up yesterday? I didn't even watch the game but I listened to it on the radio and damn, that boy good! Rodgers is GOOD, like GREAT GOOD! So yes I know I'm reaching here, like an infinite amount but fuck it, why not ask?

No one saw Brady coming. Don't think Steve Young was not a big star in college either (although I could very well be wrong about that). Romo wasnt a huge star but appears to be a future HOFer. Big Ben didn't draw major clout in college and he's a future HOFer also. Don't know if R. Wilson is a future HOFer but he is a excellent QB no one saw coming. All of the these guys are great but Rodgers is one of a kind.

So I know or truly doubt Petty can be the next Rodgers but can he be anywhere close? The next Romo or Big Ben or R. Wilson at least? I'm reaching and desperate here for a franchise QB as we all are so help me out Jets faithful. Tell me something good and please mean it. Don't bullshit me! Does Petty have a chance to be a great one for us?

Depends on coaching and how hard he works. I like what I see so far. Can he be like the names mention well a good system and some decent role players will help his cause.

Man Rodgers is special. His quick release is like Marino's, accuracy like Montana, a rocket arm like Moon, he moves like Elway, intelligence like Manning and toughness like Farve. He can make most average players into pro bowlers and bad players to good ones. All QBs need talented players to help them but players like Rodgers, Brady, Marino and Elway for example can make lemonade damn near without lemons. Man if only Petty can come anywhere close and we will have us a hell of a QB.

Don't think Steve Young was not a big star in college either (although I could very well be wrong about that).
Steve Young was BIG-IME from the very beginning. He was great in college and probably should have won the Heisman, but he lost out to RB Mike Rozier from Nebraska. Back then there was a Heisman run by RB's and the voters favored the power elite programs like Nebraska. But I thought that was one of the worst votes in history, they should have given it to Young who was amazing at BYU.

In fact he was so amazing that the USFL offered him what was then an unprecedented contract to play for the LA franchise, similar to what the AFL (Jets) did to secure Namath in its NY market. It was like a lifetime contract for an ungodly amount of money, thats how bad the new league wanted him in one of its major markets. Donald Trump (yes, that Donald Trump) owned the NJ/NY franchise and he did something similar with Hershel Walker, so the NY market had its mega star too.

Later, when the USFL disbanded, there was a supplemental draft for the USFL's players and Tampa Bay selected Steve Young with the #1 Pick. They foolishly traded him to SF, and the rest, as they say, is history.

But back to your main point and the answer is YES, its definitely possible. There's a slew of examples of QB's who were not high first round picks, but they went on the have great careers in the NFL. There's no reason Petty can't be another one. The odds may not be terrific, but by no means is it impossible.

Talent/physical tools wise Petty definitely can be great. If you were going to build a QB be is pretty much it IMO.

Mentally I think he has the toughness and has shown in college that he can get the best out of his team when they need it. Does that translate to the NFL we don't know.

Of course the big part that makes any great QB great is football knowledge and processing. This is what makes QBs great above everything else. We will see if Petty can develop into this

Any chance Bryce Petty can become the next Aaron Rodgers? Maybe if he legally changes his name.

Rodgers is an once in a generation talent. Feet always moving, able to throw accurately from many different angles and body positions, calm and with an arm like a rifle. It's a bit of a reach to ask any player to live up to Rodger's standard.

From a physical tools stand point, he is Aaron Rodgers 2.0 at the same stage of their careers. Even in the draft process evaluation he was compared heavily to Aaron Rodgers when Rodgers was coming out of CAL... Only difference, other than being in a PAC 10 college, Petty wasn't reading Defenses in College and calling audible and Rodgers was. Which is a huge difference... But Petty is a smart kid. If he puts in the work and studies like the great QB's do, he has a good chance of being Aaron Rodgers lite. He may not be the elite of elite QB's ala Rodgers and Brady but I think he can be a Franchise QB.

Thanks for the correction update. I forgot Young was a beast at college. Didn't even remember what college he went to but your right, he was a monster at BYU. So he is not a suited example for this thread.

Yeah I know, I know but I'm reaching here and for the sake of all of us and the Jets organization. You gotta give me that, LOL!

Petty has all the tools, including the quick release many great QB's have.

I'm going to go with what Gailey said about him "I like where he's going, he just isn't there yet."

Don't know about Aaron Rogers, but he has the potential to be a very good QB

I try not to think about Aaron Rogers in even comparing him to a young upstart.
If I do think about AR my my will revert back to 2005 when he was on the board when the Jets traded thier #1 for DOUG FRIGGIN JOLLY!!

I'm still wretching over that one. IMO that's worse than Marino, Sapp or any other draft blunder

This is almost an exact quote from a guy on ESPN radio (Lagrecca?) Don't recall who but he mentioned that They had Gailey on the weekend of Game 1. Gailey said they the coaches are no more impressed with Petty as they were when they scouted him at the combine to be drafted. Not saying he can't get better but so far they made it clear gailey said they saw nothing from him this summer to get them any more excited than they were when we drafted him in April.

Well here is the exact quote your referring to, and it certainly wasn't intended to be negative.

On Bryce Petty's progress. "I don't like where he is," Gailey said of Petty, the rookie backup quarterback, "but I like where he's headed." Bowles said Petty was kept over Matt Flynn and Josh Johnson because Petty had been absorbing the offense since the spring. That said, isn't it risky to go with Petty as Fitzpatrick's backup, even if it's just for the Browns game, if not a few weeks more? "You have to make evaluations in this business; that's part of it," Gailey said. "And that was the evaluation—we knew what we've got, we've got a guy that's been in our offense since last spring, he's got a better understanding of it, he seems to be getting better. Is he a finished product at this point? No, he's not. But those other guys weren't, either."

Of course he can be a great QB. He has the smarts and he has the build. Time will tell. Will we give him the time to become Rodgers like the Packers did? I think he will be elevated to compete for the starter next season which may be rushing him. We ain't got Brett Farve in his prime in front of him so he ain't getting 3 years..it's NY.

Don't think he needs 3 years...maybe just one but 2 would be nice.

Fitz is only 31 years old, not 40. If he can go 10-6, and make the playoffs, Petty could get his two years.

Just saying
