The marks of a dominant defense

Some tell-tale signs that the Jets have a dominant defense:

1. Turnovers

You can't do much better than leading the league with 13 turnovers, an obscene number thru four games.

2. Harass the Quarerback

While we are in the middle of the pack with sacks, I've been pleased for the most part with the pressure and hits on the QB and a lot of the turnovers are attributed to that.

3. Stop the Run and make offenses one dimensional

It hasn't been perfect, we still need to work on our gap responsibilities, not surprising with a new coach and new system, but other than the Eagles game where the entire team laid an egg, I think we've mostly turned our opponents rushing attacks into non factors, and now we get Sheldon back, arguably our best D-lineman, so 2 & 3 only figures to improve going forward, a scary proposition for the remaining teams on our schedule.

4. 3rd and 4th Down Stops

18 consecutive stops on 3rd Down and 4 consecutive stops on 4th Down is almost unreal in todays arena-league NFL, regardless of the opponent. This is 2000 Ravens level dominance on 3rd Down and its probably the most underrated defensive stat in all of football. If you can consistently get off the field on 3rd and 4th Downs, not only does it help your own offense by giving them more possessions and allowing them to stay in a rhythm, it also helps their own cause, allows us to control time of possession, and keeps the defense fresh for four quarters.

5. Total Yards Per Game Allowed

The Jets currently rank third overall at 280.2 YPG Allowed, slightly behind Seattle (278.8) and Denver (275.5)

6. Points Allowed

Last but not least, until they stop keeping score in these games this is the bottom line statistic. When all is said and done, this is the one that wins and loses ball games, and the Jets defense leads the league thru four games having surrendered a minuscule 55 Points (13.8 PPG), almost four PPG less than the team that ranks second. Oh and 7 of those 55 Points came on a Darren Sproles punt return, so its really 48 Points (12 PPG) the defense has surrendered thru four games.

BOTTOM LINE

What you see reflected here is a dominant defense from top to bottom. Not 85 Bears level dominance, we may never see anything like that again due to the rules changes over the past few decades, all favoring the offense, but this is recent Seahawks level dominance and the Seahawks have played in the last two Super Bowls. This defense is dominant at the line of scrimmage, but terrific at the backend in pass coverage as well. There's some big-time ballhawking going on back there.

When you have both of these elements working together, you have something special. Right now the Jets appear to have something special, and Sheldon Richardson has yet to play a down of football for this team, which all ends following the bye week. Scary proposition. I think we need better production off the edge to reach the level of a transcendent defense, but I'm encouraged that Mauldin and Reilly will only get better with more opportunities to rush the passer as the season progresses, especially with Sheldon added to an already dominating D-line in front of them.

Exactly. If this defense can put pressure on brady and hold them to below 20 points, then we are looking at a dominate defense.

Very good post. It is encouraging to say the least that this defense is playing as well as it is with all of the new faces and completely new system. I think it only gets better, particularly with #91 coming back. If the rushing attack stays effective combined with this D, we will bludgeon teams into submission. Love this style of football.

While the Jets defense is very good and probably a top 5 they still have to show against the Patriots. While there are a ton they do very well I do see a weakness in two areas - lack of a dominate pass rusher and the linebackers are slow and not great in coverage.

Getting Richardson back will help with more pressure up the middle and will be tough for most teams to stop. Getting pressure up the middle is also the best way to stop Brady. However, I think Brady and Belicheck will find a way to expose our lack of speed at the linebacker position. Boles will need a great game plan to limit what the Pats do.

Still love what we got and the defense will ultimately be the reason we could make the playoffs (there I said it). Boles and MaCaggan will figure out how to replace Pace and Coples next year with some fresh legs. Hoping Mauldin is one of them.

IMO, the only thing the Jets are missing is a dominate pass rusher.

If someone steps up, (I haven't given up on Coples yet) This might be a very special D

In the first game against the Pats last year the Jets had the ball 40 minutes and 54 seconds and lost when Folk missed a long FG.. IN the 2nd game they held the Pats to under 20 but still lost.. And this team is much better No??

Well they didn't make the 2 point conversion for the tie, and Folks 58 yarder was blocked, probably because of the low angle.
And yes this team is much better, but let's see what this coaching staff has in store for Tommy and Bill.
Go Jets

This defense hasn't been tested yet in my opinion. All of the Jets opponents thus far this season have been flawed teams. Cleveland hasn't ever really been good since the new Browns joined the league. The Colts had serious in fighting going in there organization when we played them. The Eagles are probably the most flawed team we faced and yet we lost. Miami Dolphins just fired their Head Coach after they played us.

The Jets need a real test to see just how good this defense and the team overall is. The Patsy game will surely tell us a lot. 3 out of the last 5 teams this team will face to end their season are teams that could possibly make noise in the playoffs. THAT's when this defense will be earning it's money.

But the statistics as Ham mentioned are very encouraging. Add to that we're getting Sheldon Richardson and Dee Milliner back. As if we weren't already very deep at corner or the DL?

This defense needs to turn the ball over on a legitimately high powered offense like the Patsies. hold them to less than 20 points, score on defense, and control the LOS. When that happens then we know this defense will have arrived.

TOP 10 ROOKIE OF THE YEAR CANDIDATES ENTERING WEEK 5

PFF's Khaled Elsayed brings you the list of our top Rookie of the Year candidates thus far.

The Pro Football Focus race for Rookie of the Year returns, after a massive slate of Week 4 action. Last week, the Bills’ Ronald Darby jumped to the top of the leaderboard, but the cornerback position can be a fragile one for a first-year player.

Here are our top 10 rookies entering Week 5 of the NFL season:

1. Ronald Darby, CB, Bills (+7.3)
Darby is simply getting better and better, with his effort against Eli Manning and the Giants his best performance yet. The second-round pick wasn’t expected to contribute this much, this soon. But he is, so credit goes to our list leader after four weeks.

2. Leonard Williams, DE, Jets (+10.7)
Williams rocketed up the list with the best performance of any rookie all year in Week 4. The Jets’ DE showed how destructive he can be against the pass, with a phenomenal five hits and four hurries against the Dolphins in London.

3. Henry Anderson, DE, Colts (+9.4)
Anderson is already a big part of the Colts’ defense, and has seen his grade grow week after week. His effort against Jacksonville was his best yet, as he put together a strong effort rushing the passer (five hurries), and an even stronger performance against the run.

4. Mitch Morse, C, Chiefs (+3.6)
Offensive lines around the league are struggling, as they tend to in the early weeks of a year, but Morse has hit the ground running. The Chiefs’ second-round pick is a natural at the center spot, even if he did get beat for a couple sacks this past week.

5. Marcus Mariota, QB, Titans (-1.0)
Mariota enjoyed a bye in Week 4, and held onto a top 5 spot. Will be looking to jump back up the rankings when he takes to the field this week.

6. Hau’oli Kikaha, LB, Saints (+5.1)
Ignore the sacks, his pass rushing hasn’t really taken our breath away. But the relentless Kikaha is turning into a force in the run game—no 4-3 outside linebacker has a better grade in this regard.

7. Karlos Williams, RB, Bills (+2.9)
It looks like a concussion might slow him down, but Williams has really made things happen when he’s been on the field. It’s a shame his momentum is about to take hit.

8. Jordan Hicks, LB, Eagles (+2.4)
Hicks has done a nice job filling in for the Eagles’ plethora of injured players at the inside linebacker position. The former Texas Longhorn definitely has a knack for flying to the ball.

9. Melvin Gordon, RB, Chargers (+2.4)
Is churning away the yards without ever getting that big, game breaking carry that might open the floodgates. Leads the rookies in forcing 12 missed tackles.

10. Vic Beasley, DE, Falcons (-0.5)
Beasley made this list because of the strength of his pass rushing (+2.7). While the Falcons schedule has been relatively easy, he’s had to deal with Jason Peters, Tyron Smith, and Duane Brown. That’s a baptism of a fire for a rookie, and it won’t get any easier with Trent Williams this week.

Dropping Out
Jameis Winston, QB, Buccaneers: Winston had one of his worst outings of the year against the Panthers. How rough? Rough enough to drop from top 5 on this list to completely out of the top 10.

Marcus Peters, CB, Chiefs: The Chiefs’ corner has been a little boom or bust, and against the Bengals, he was most definitely not boom.

Shaq Thompson, LB, Panthers: After three encouraging efforts, Thompson had a really off day, missing more tackles than he made.

Five To Watch
Maxx Williams, TE, Ravens: Williams has impressed with limited playing time. If he can stay on the field, he’ll have a shot at cracking the top 10.

T.J. Yeldon, RB, Jaguars: Yeldon leads rookies in total yards, but he’s not making as much out of his opportunities as the two other rookie runners who made the list.

Adrian Amos, S, Bears: Never far from making the top 10, Amos has quietly gone about his business. His play has been solid, if somewhat unspectacular.

Carl Davis, DE, Ravens: After back-to-back bad weeks, Davis responded with a nice effort on his 35 snaps against Pittsburgh.

Amari Cooper, WR, Raiders: Cooper is certainly not being shorted on opportunities, but has at times struggled with the upgrade to the pros.

Josh Norman is giving up a passer rating of just 23.1 when targeted, best in the NFL.
2nd? Revis (23.8)

Bowles will counter with Safties and CB playing mostly nickle and dime...if they run, then we crowd the line.
