Valid points and I can't argue that. I will admit I'm one of those people your talking about but there's a flip side to that. Its just my opinion and a hunch that Petty can handle it and wont wither and cower under pressure like Sanchez and Geno has. Even if he isnt 100% ready to go. I would hope he's atleast 75% ready or would agree to not put him out there but I don't know where he is in his development. None of us do in fact.
I honestly see the Jets winning 3-4 games max this year and I don't think 9 wins will be enough for a wild card. With that said and if this is true, play Petty now and give him 6 full games to see where he is and what he can do for us. See if we have a future with him or not. I feel we could win the same 3-4 games with Petty that we could with Fitz so why not.
Now obviously the coaches wont see it this way because they know better then we all do. Besides, their job is to win now and as much as possible. If they dont feel they can do that with Petty over Fitz or Geno then ofcourse they won't play him yet. They will wait until they're mathematically eliminated before and if they play him but that might not be until game 14. Will two games be enough to judge if he can possibly be our future? I dont think so but that's just my opinion.
It looks like a lot of people disagree with me here for one reason or another and they are all valid points and that's fine. Of course I have no problem with this but there's one thing I want to point out that if you have blinders on you need to realize, with the way this team is playing they're not going to make the playoffs. I'm not quite sure what has happened but everything has fallen apart since the New England game and it doesn't look like it's going to get fixed. If Petty has shown the coaches and the team that he is atleast 75% ready and he showing some kind of promise then they should play this kid. To see if he can somewhat be the answer will or be the answer for our future before they consider drafting another QB. Give the kid some reps, he's 24 years old. Its not like he's 21 and has really no experience at the QB position (college wise) and it's totally immature. He seems to be very mature, very talented and intelligent kid. I believe and this may just be my opinion, he can do no worse then Fitz or Geno so why not play him. If he's learning the way I hope you learning Fitz and the coaches as far as reading the defenses, learning the playbook, timing throws, situational playcalling and so on and so forth they need to give the kid a shot to see what he can get from him. He can't do no worse then Fitz and I'm honestly not saying Fitz is the reason why the Jets have fallen apart but he's playing his part in it. Fitz also won't be the sole reason if/when they start winning and I'm not saying Petty will be either but he can't do not worse then Fitz so why not play him?
Can I ask, what do you base this hunch on? Have you seen more than his college film in the spread and handful of preseason series in the nfl? Because if not, I think you're taking a fantasy football approach more so than a real-life approach. More wishful thinking than opinion. Just sayin'.
I personally don't see any basis for thinking Petty "can't do any worse" at this point, whether he's 75%, 80%, or 77.636865% ready. Not saying that he couldn't be the next Brady or Rodgers, just that I haven't seen anything in his work in the league to date to make me think he will or won't be our next starting QB.
