with only two wr, no te, and a hit and miss running game I don't throw petty out there. I let fitz finish up and then cut gen or trade him for some m&m's in the off-season.
I'd hold out for peanut.

A very reasonable analogy and thought process of opinion. Can't argue it at all and I think we both can agree on this, the coaches know if he's 100% or as close to it as possible to being ready to play him. So if they don't, either he's not ready or their stupid as shit because we ain't going no place with this team.Oh, I'm fine agreeing to disagree. And I respect your opinion, even if I do not share it.
That said, unless Petty is truly 100% ready, you really won't find out about him by putting him out there. What you may find is that he is not ready yet, and you tossed him into the deep end without him knowing how to swim yet. Could that keep him from ever learning to swim? Maybe, maybe not. But I don't think it's worth the risk.
I want to see Petty out there when he is truly ready, 100% ready, and we can get an honest evaluation. I don't know if that is the case right now.
And truthfully, I am not about to sacrifice the slow, deliberate development of this kid all for the sake of a possible wild card spot and one extra weekend of football in January.
Fitzpatrick wasn't great today, but he wasn't the biggest reason we lost. Anyone who watched that game could see how badly they played as a team.
I'm on the side of waiting with Petty. Don't throw him in now. Patience is needed with a kid like him. He's got all the physical ability to play the position, but I'm very skeptical that he's ready for the NFL game right now. Not after the system he played at Baylor.
I'm very optimistic about Petty, though.
no until we fix this offensive line this off season then give him the chance to win the job. Petty's one problem in college was happy feet, yes he had great accuracy and touch on his throws but got flustered with broken assignments up front...
no Mangold, Breno sucking ass and Winters not much of a pass blocker will have Petty throwing into double and triple coverage trying to force the issue like Fitzpatrick has been doing all season...
why not play gino instead. we think we know what he can do but lets find out for sure. if he get killed by the bad play of the OL we are not losing anything as he will probably be gone next year anyway. give petty the rest of the year to learn from fritz as they sit on the watching gino run for his life.
Because there is virtually nothing to gain, other than satisfying the curiosity of the fan base and the armchair GMs.
If the Packers had made a decision by this point on Aaron Rodgers, he never would have gotten the starting job. He sat for three years.
Seriously, I don't understand the mindset of "why not?" The guy may or may not be a franchise QB, so why not toss him out there now? Well, I ask "why?" Why toss him out there now? What is really to gain?
Agree
BTW, what do you think is going to happen with your name sake? He got his butt handed to him to day. Granted it was JJ, but still, Brick is scheduled to make $14,000,000 next year.
To be honest, I saw about 70% of the game today because I had a minor family emergency. So I cannot give an honest assessment of his play today. But yes, Brick isn't the same player he was from rookie year to 2012. He's getting older and, naturally, he's not going to hold up as well against elite players like Watt. If we have a better option than him, someone cheaper, who can handle the blindside, then by all means let's do it.
I just don't know who that alternative is. But if Brick wants to stay on another year or two, he's gonna have to take less.
So it sounds like your agreeing with me to a certain extent and I'm not even putting this lose entirely on Fitz. Fitz did have a bad game but the defense stunk. I mean stop somebody, damn! They let a back up QB beat them and make them look like shit and he couldn't even beat out Fitz when he was there. I put this loss on the D and coaching mostly but Fitz does play his part in it. Defense has looked slow and like shit over the past few weeks really. So let me get this straight; you want vanilla football for another season with a 10% chance we will stumble into the playoffs and lose the first game. No thanks, I'll take a year off from football if Fitz is the starter next year. Can't watch another year of completions for minus 3 on 3rd and one.
It was a nice gamble by Mac to put this mix of FA and existing vets out there but it isn't working and we are right back where we started except for ruining the nice cap cushion we had.
Fitz lost this game in the end; back to back picks. End of story.
I like Petty, I liked the pick where we got him and he's shown some good in preseason. But keep in mind that he was not the prospect Gene was coming out, and it's quite possible that if Geno was spoonfed to us in a few preseason games and nothing more, we might be feeling better about him than we are about Petty at this point.
I'd rather err on the side of caution this year. And I'm definitely not going all in - I'd draft a QB next year for sure.
I also think, if they haven't made up their mind about Geno yet, he's the one that needs to get on the field. Petty isn't going anywhere.

I hate to disagree with the sentiment of this thread, but for the 1st time this year I do believe a QB change is warranted, but I believe Geno should get the start.
At 5-5, the Jets are still alive for a WC berth. I think the reason we are having so much trouble running the ball is that the opposing team has disregarded our down field vertical game. I would start Geno to see if he can jump start this team, ignite our offense and determine if it's worth bringing him back next season.
i never thought that highly of geno even in college
if & when we are eliminated from the playoffs i have no problem with the jets taking a look at petty against live bullets.. frankly i think it makes quite a bit of sense.. why waste the opportunity to see what the kid has learned so far?? maybe we find out enough about petty that the jets feel comfortable not having draft a QB in the 1st round next season??One was anointed and the other was handed the job. And both played day one. Petty has sat for 10 weeks to learn. One more loss and the season is over so why not.
