Can we finally play Petty now to see what he has for the rest of the season!!!

I didn't because it doesn't relate to Petty, but you can see the whole article here:
http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2014/nfl-draft-round-round-quarterback-data

There are certainly plenty of busts, which I think only serves to show that you have to keep drafting QBs until you get one, and then keep drafting them to keep the cupboards full (more project-types at that point).

One last thing on the whole study, you can see that in rounds 1&2, you have a 50/50 chance. That falls way off by round 4. I'd actually break it down further though and look at QBs taken in the first 6 or 10 picks, guys that are pretty much expected to contribute year 1, to see what my odds are there. I feel a QB taken at #20 in round 1 isn't generally a guy you think is going to see the field as a rookie under normal circumstances, you're not anointing him the starter on draft day.

For those that know nothing about Bryce Petty.. Let me give you my quick scouting report... I have watched every game he played at Baylor
Positives:
1. Ideal NFL Size 6'3 230lbs
2. Not a running QB but can run if he needs to... Not fast but quick. can c
3. Does not have a rocket for an arm but his arm strength is above average, definitely stronger than Fitzs and Sanchez to give a comparison
4. He is a tough Kid.. played through a back injury bis senior year ( my guess as to why he didn't get drafted late 1st early 2nd Rd)
5. Very Smart
6. Can use touch when needed
7. I have never seen him under throw a deep ball
8. Great Leader

Negative:
1. Comes from the One read Spread offense
2. Sometimes pressure around him tends to make him struggle with decision making. takes sacks hen he can easily throw it away in the pocket.. on scrambles he'll throw it away (unlike Geno)
3. Needs to learn how to read defenses
4. A few times I have seen him lose confidence and he stays down on himself. (I think Fitz will help here, when fitz is having a bad game he shrugs it off in game and keeps slinging with confidence)

Overall the kid in my opinion just needs to learn how to read defenses in the NFL.. big task but he's a smart kid. If Mariota can do it.. this kid can as well. He has all the physical talents and all the intangibles... Once he understands the nuances of the offense and how to read the defenses, sky's the limit.

Great break down Lou. The only thing that I might disagree with is I think he has a stronger arm then you are giving him credit for.

The back injury he received in the first game of the season, that caused him pain all season, is something that is seldom talked about, and IMO the reason he fell to the 4th

Hope this kid pans out

nice breakdown.. everything rings true to what i've read or heard about petty, aside from occasionally losing confidence in game..

IMO, moving up in the 4th to grab this kid was a no brainer..

FL, do you believe the back injury might have robbed him of some zip on the ball his senior year??

as in, now that he should be fully recovered, he'll probably regain said zip??

I do. If you look at him in 2013, then compare it to 2014, it surly seems his ball has less velocity to it. he also was a bit more inconsistent in 2014, depending on how much his back was bothering him. After the 2013 season a lot of people were debating who was going first, Petty or Winston.

His agent, after he was drafted, came out and spoke about how much his back was bothering him during the season. Of course this could be agent speak, but IMO, he was a much better player in 2013 then he was in 2014, even though his numbers were still very strong, he just didn't show the consistency.

I had both Winston and Mariota in front of him coming into this draft, but I didn't know his back was still an issue.

I have a lot of hope for this kid

Gruden loves the kid. Told him on Gruden's QB camp "I've seen a lot of QB's coming out, not many can throw the ball the way you can". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LP1OoM6cdQ4 Good watch

Jon Gruden: Bryce Petty might have the best arm talent in draft

If sheer arm strength will play a big role in determining which quarterback will be the third guy taken at the position, Baylor's Bryce Petty is in good shape.

Former NFL coach/current ESPN NFL analyst Jon Gruden says Petty "might have the best arm talent in this draft."

"Last year Derek Carr came to town and put on an aerial display," Gruden said in a news release touting his "Gruden's Quarterback Camp" show on ESPN. "I would be surprised if Petty isn't that guy this year."

Petty, who measured 6-foot-2 7/8 and 230 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine, threw for 8,055 yards and 61 TDs (against 10 interceptions) in his two seasons as Baylor's starter. Gruden calls him "a great passer."

Petty ran a spread offense at Baylor and there are questions about him transitioning to a pro-style attack, but Gruden doesn't seem to share those concerns. He says Petty has been "stereotyped in the Baylor offense, but he's different."

NFL Media analysts Bucky Brooks and Lance Zierlein have Petty as the No. 4 quarterback available, while fellow analyst Mike Mayock has Petty as his third quarterback.

The other quarterbacks involved in Gruden's "camp" this year are Garrett Grayson, Brett Hundley, Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston. Of Grayson, Gruden said, "There's a lot of parts of Colorado State's system that I recognize, unlike a lot of college football."

I don't usually get all excited about new Jets QB's. Wasn't crazy about Sanchez, and hated smith. IMO Petty has much more tools then both of them together. With Fitz as his mentor I honestly think/hope this kid has a legitimate chance to become a very good NFL QB. With out the injury i think this guy is a 1st rounder

i've been a little surprised that some here have him as such a long shot to make good, especially with how & why he dropped in the draft.. hell, i'm not a college football guy & i knew how highly he was thought of as a prospect (after his junior year) just from posting here!! we'll see..

A lot of people from NY don't watch a lot of NCAA football. They look at the kid, see a 4th round pick, then go with the odds that most 4th's don't do all that well in the league.

Some players actually have reasons for having fallen. Petty's injury hopefully is a viable one

flgreen i've seen gruden's QB camp show more than a few times..

it's entertaining to me because i find gruden entertaining in this setting & you get just a glimpse of where these kids heads are..

that said, gruden does seem to be legitimately high most/all of them..

this seemed different.. gruden did not sound like he was blowing smoke for the sake of it..

LOLz granted this is the first time one of the kids on the show ended up drafted by us so i might be bias.. :)
