Bills interested in Rex Ryan, raising potential Jets coach swap

Ryan went 50-52 over six seasons as Jets coach with two playoff appearances, but none since 2010. The Jets fired him Monday.

The Falcons are considered the most likely landing spot for Ryan. He interviewed there in 2008 and is said to have hit it off with owner Arthur Blank. The Falcons have a solid offense, but need a boost on defense, something Ryan can provide.

The Bills would be a fascinating landing spot for Ryan, especially if former Bills coach Doug Marrone winds up as Jets coach. Marrone exercised an opt-out in his contract to leave Buffalo on Wednesday. The Jets have lined up an interview with Marrone, which is expected to take place Sunday or Monday.

If Ryan does not land a head coaching job, he is expected to go into broadcasting.

well if rex gets the job at least we'll get a chance to see our best defensive players play the jets at least twice a year..

after they become free agents of course.. right [MENTION=9]flgreen[/MENTION]??

Not sure if the Bills need him if they keep Schwartz. That man has that defense nearly at the top.

I think so. Suspect the entire D L will migrate to where ever Rex is coaching as their contracts come do. As long as that team is willing to pay them

yep, and that is what has caused their improvement. Not Marrone's 26th rated offense

I find it interesting in that Bowles said its impossible for 2 Qbs to get 1st team reps but Roman said yesterday the Bills will have all 4 Qbs get 1st team reps...two different ways to approach the lack of a franchise QB.

IMO Bowles is right and Rex is wrong, and I spent a lot of time at the other site where I post over the past two years criticizing Rex for not naming Geno the starter at the start of training camp, both last year and the year before, if only to make sure he gets ALL of the first team reps, reps that are absolutely crucial for a young QB who had to learn new systems in both of his first two years, and now has to learn his third system in three years.

I'm happy to hear Bowles say what he said because it means he understands the importance of getting those reps. I loved Rex as a coach, but IMO his lack of understanding about offense and how to groom a young QB made life a lot tougher on Geno than it needed to be. Its tough enough when you do everything right, you don't need to make it tougher.

Last year, then-Jets coach Rex Ryan said there would be an open competition between Geno Smith and Mike Vick at quarterback. And then Vick blew the whole thing up by saying it wouldn’t be an even distribution of first-team reps and the Jets eventually (and reluctantly) agreed.

This year, Ryan has suggested that a four-way chase for the starting quarterback job will happen in Buffalo. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman has backed up the boss, telling reporters on Monday that all four quarterbacks will get first-team reps, at some point.

“I think all four are doing a very nice job in our meetings and in communicating, as we are in a teaching phase,” Roman said of Matt Cassel, EJ Manuel, Tyrod Taylor, and Jeff Tuel. “They’re all going to have ample opportunity to get out there and practice. When we start evaluating then we’ll start to play around with things a little bit, who’s with the first team the one day, and the next day, and so forth. Everyone will have a chance to work with the first team and everybody’s going to have ample opportunity to put their best foot forward. And then we’ll have a good feel for it as we go.”

It’s hard to imagine Tuel winning the job, but Taylor (signed from the Ravens) is the only quarterback on the roster Ryan has openly praised. Some think the Bills will use a specialty package with Taylor, something Ryan tried at times with the Jets.

Whoever the quarterback is, the challenge will be to distribute the ball to an impressive collection of skill-position players who may get frustrated by not getting the ball in their hands. Roman has an idea for keeping that from happening.

“Just get two balls,” Roman said. “Change the rules.”

Then Roman said what many have said — that team success should keep any individuals from grousing.

“That stat we are about is winning,” Roman said. “Everybody understands that in a team sport, sometimes you’re doing the dirty work and sometimes you’re getting the glory, but if it all ends up in helping the team win then everybody benefits, and it’s pretty obvious. However, I think you have to have guys, character guys, and I believe we have those guys. So, it’s a great problem, if you want to look at it that way.”

A great problem is still a problem. And if the Bills don’t win, it could become a great big problem. But at least they’d have three other quarterbacks to consider, if they have to bench the first guy to start.

ESPN Bills reporter Mike Rodak believes Fred Jackson is not a lock for the final roster.
It's tough to see the Bills unloading the heart and soul of their offense, a guy that's been mostly productive for eight seasons. But OC Greg Roman wants to keep four tight ends and possibly six receivers as well. That might only leave room for three running backs, which means F-Jax would need to beat out Bryce Brown or Boobie Dixon for a spot behind LeSean McCoy and Karlos Williams. The Bills would save $2.5M in cap space by releasing Jackson.
