Rex Ryan hand-picked QB Tyrod Taylor, wanted him with Jets

The Bills were busy this offseason, adding playmakers LeSean McCoy, Percy Harvin and Charles Clay, and now new coach Rex Ryan is charged with getting this group to the playoffs for the first time since 1999.

But in today's NFL, any postseason conversations begin and end with the quarterback. Buffalo drafted EJ Manuel in the first round of the 2013 draft. Perhaps the biggest indictment against his two years in the league is that the team preferred Kyle Orton before he retired and traded for journeyman Matt Cassel this offseason. But it's the other quarterback the Bills signed, Tyrod Taylor, that may have the best chance to win the job.

Ryan has been a Taylor fan dating back to the quarterback's time as Joe Flacco's backup in Baltimore. And according to the Buffalo News, Ryan "hand-picked" Taylor after previously wanting to add him to the Jets' roster when he was the coach there.

“I actually tried to trade for [Taylor] when I was with the Jets,” Ryan said back in May, via ESPN.com. “If he's not the fastest quarterback in the league, he's certainly up there with them. He's got great run skills. I'm not gonna say he's Russell Wilson, but he's got a little of that in him, where he's able to run zone reads and pull the ball down and be effective.”

More from the News:

Ryan loves Taylor's speed ... he also thinks Taylor's passing skills make him a worthy contender. Taylor has a mixed review of his work through the offseason. At times, he was happy with his decision-making and passing and ability to move the offense. At times, he wasn't, noting there were areas that he and the entire offense could improve.
It's not surprising that Taylor's inconsistent; he's the least experienced quarterback on the roster, throwing just 35 passes in the last four seasons.

“I think it comes with just building trust in the receivers, knowing the type of guys you have around you, just knowing the type of playmakers that you have around you,” Taylor said. “It's my job to get the ball to them. We have a bunch of speed on the outside, a bunch of guys that can get the ball and do very well in the space, so it's my job to get the ball to them as quickly as possible. And that's mainly what I'm trusting when I go out there.”

No matter how much Ryan might be enamored with Taylor he understands that Jim Kelly ain't walking through the door.

"It's safe to say we won't have LeBron at quarterback," Ryan said earlier this month. ... "Wisdom tells me to let it play it out, we'll see what happens through the end," Ryan said. "So you just eliminated Tyrod Taylor, that's not fair to do. So I think wisdom says let this thing play out and it will all work out in the end."

If this all sounds familiar it should; CBSSports.com's Sean Wagner-McGough wrote in May that Taylor has a great chance of beginning the season as the Bills' starter.

Sounds like the formerly fat dumbass has found a new QB love reminiscent of the one he had the last two years who was also really fast, good at the read option, could pull it down and run and couldn't pass for shit

Meaning : "I don't really care about this offense stuff. But, we'll wind up with somebody. He probably won't be any good, but we'll have somebody. "

Typical Rex...

Has him in for a workout. Hasn't signed yet, but showing strong interest in a guy who hasn't played in the NFL since 2012, and, let's face it, never REALLY played in the NFL.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/06/17/bills-work-out-former-jets-right-tackle-wayne-hunter/

He is signed now. So at least Tyrod Taylor (or whoever plays QB) can take comfort knowing that Wayne Hunter will be there to help protect him.

Read Ryan's quotes.........I tried to trade for him when I was with the Jets. Ryan had way too much say in personnel here and it wasn't a strong point. That will be one key in the eventual erosion of the Bills roster. Like in 2009, Ryan will succeed with Marrone's players early on just as he did with Mangini's.

Not necessarily a Rex story -- but one of his assistant coaches.

Aaron Kromer is the same guy that got in trouble with the Bears last year for complaining about Jay Cutler to the media.

Was just about to post this. I'm sure people will blame Rex for his battery charge. Putting that aside, shame on Rex for hiring this guy. Didn't the leaks to the media by Petine undermine him? Why hire someone who did the same for Chicago.

Didn't even think about the Pettine parallel. Good point. Not going to rush to judgement either -- wasn't Dennis Thurman accused of assaulting a woman last year that turned out to be BS.

Rex can sign as many players from the 2009-10 Jets as he wants. Be my guest. While he's at it, he can bring back Brodney Pool, Dwight Lowery and Joe McKnight.

:secret-handshake-sm

When the Tuna went to the Cowboys he brought in Bledsoe,Vinny,Richie Anderson,Dedric Ward,Jason Fabini,Fergy,Aaron Glenn,Terry Glenn,KJ and Eric Ogbogu and I probably missed a few..LOL

Except of course they were decent players. Rex is literally bringing in some of the worst players the Jets have had. He is such a buffoon.

Bills safety uses twitter to try and hit on porn star, gets totally rebuffed

These two are not a couple. (USATSI/Twitter)

NFL players use Twitter for a lot of things.

Some players use Twitter to let everyone know that they won't be showing up for training camp if they don't have a new deal in place. I'm looking at you Dez Bryant.

Other players use Twitter to go on long rants about how NFL contracts are unfair to players. I'm looking at you Adrian Peterson.

And then there's Bills safety Duke Williams, who apparently uses Twitter to hit on adult film stars.

Over the past five months, Williams has been sending direct messages -- the Twitter equivalent of a private text -- to adult film star Mia Khalifa, who you can see below.

Apparently, Khalifa decided she was getting tired of Williams' messages, so she decided to shame him on Twitter.

After Williams sent Khalifa a message, Khalifa shot back with a tweet that you can read by clicking at the end of the sentence, but before you click, keep in mind that it's slightly vulgar (although there's no cuss words).

Williams later confirmed on Twitter that he did send a message to the adult film star, but he also added that he wasn't looking for any action and that Khalifa didn't post the "full conversation."

Khalifa did end up posting more of the conversation and let's just say, Williams' statement above might not be completely accurate.

Anyway, I'm guessing that there's no chapter in the NFL social media handbook on how to deal with this.

Oh, and it looks like I have something in common with Mia, we both use the CBS Sports app.
